Title: Hello people
Post by: manpaint on August 11, 2022, 09:43:13 pm
Hi, my name is manpaint and I am new here. I fell in the Yesterweb rabbit hole a few days ago and fell in love with the it's vibe. I found this site through Sadgirl's webring and I must say that the CSS here is lovely.

As for me, I am a profesional graphic designer and hobbysist archivist. I also like to make some RPG Maker games from time-to-time. I like old stuff and was happy to discover that there was some people out there keeping the old web alive.

I have yet to make a personal website as I was busy doing some work for the RuneScape Archive, but I certainly will make one at some point.

Hey, manpaint. I love what you're doing with the RuneScape Archive.

I used to play on Ultima Online free-servers a lot, and I don't know if that would have been possible at all without people's old copies of the game client. Definitely there was lots of digging around for specific client versions.

The people who do the work of actually reverse engineering the clients to see how things worked are amazing.

Thanks! It is true that client reverse-engeneering can lead to a lot of goods things. Two examples on top of my head:

Back in the day RuneScape music used some sort of proprietary MIDI format. During a brief period of time (2009-2013) the music sounded very unique. Sadly not all of it was archived and most were thoughts to be lost to time. But that was not actually the case as I managed to trick old clients to play specific music tracks, thus allowing me to  archive the music of the RuneScape HD era (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p_ZhhIMfDk).

Another example was RuneScape Classic replays (https://github.com/RSCPlus/rscplus-replays). As soon as the game was announced to be shut down, some people made a client that could create "replays" - essentially creating "videos" in data format of how the server behaved. Using this tool, we managed to preserve most of RuneScape Classic.

Indeed. Sadly not all the music in the game's history survived. Many track, especially during early RuneScape 2 are lost unless someone find old game data on their computer.
