thanks for the reply! yeah, i noticed that user's code for sure as well- i guess i mostly mean from a visual standpoint purely and Not the coding one lol. the discord images especially were an oof to see. there were a few other sites ive seen that i just cant recall that i know also split up their image based layout in a similar way however which is mostly what i wanted to get at. (remembered one was sugarforbrains- which is different in many ways but, that same hand drawn vibe i guess)

that definitely makes sense-- ill have to look into some way to "slice" up an image though i am sure it wont be too hard. when i saw cinni's site i kept getting the Entire image of the layout too when looking at it closer and so i assumed thats what was happening- one solid image with stuff positioned on top. ill have to think about that- what might work better for the design i have in mind!

i will definitely have to test some things out!! probably gonna whip together some super bare images just so i can mess around before dedicating my time to something super clean that doesnt work...

So i only made my website in early 2022... i sat down and learned html/css just for it, and im quite proud of what i got done this year! even if the end of the year slowed down i still got a solid finished look for my website and im quite pleased with it.

Early April 2022:

May 2022:

August 2022 onward:

Aside I made a landing page after a while, along with TWO new sub domains, Coffini Outlet and my Projects website. Neither have changed in terms of design through the year though.

ok, listen, i dont know the word that is used to describe a website like this but i am sure you will know what i mean when i give the examples. its been a hot minute since i focused on webdesign since the last months got kinda crazy... but i have ideas of layouts for my site that i have just always been a lil unsure how the tackle.

when is say website with "image based containers" i means like ones where the entire layout of boxes and whatnot arent defined by the existing css but rather an entire image/multiple images that make the layout!

examples,
https://uncannyvalley.neocities.org/
https://cinni.net/

uncannyvalley especially is done in a way i have seen most other sites done-- where it seems the layout image has been split into pieces. my main question is for one, is that the way to go about it? no ones giant image but multiple split up images? as i can see, it seems the basic idea is to set up your div containers to match the pixel size of your full layout, and then set those images to fill the entire area.

are there easier ways to go about this? im mostly dreading trying to figure out the pixel size of the entire image and how to split it up to fit in div boxes, honestly. admittedly tho my use of divs has always been kind of a mess as i feel like i may need to reteach myself some stuff to make sure i better understand how to tackle this idea specifically.

wow, really love this fan site! echoing above, the aesthetic looks great. i dont see too many dedicated fansites these days and i have plans to make one for something i like too, so its helpful seeing what you put on here and how you organize it (i get overwhelmed thinking about what i should have). i like the idea of making some shrines but i definitely have at least one thing i feel i could better dedicate a whole fansite too as well.

very much agree with your addition! its funny because after i learned by error in trying to use themes i had no understanding in reding, i went off on my own and im glad for that. but in some ways i fell into the error you describe to- i wanted to do *everything* from scratch now and decided i would not give into copy/pasting other people's bits of code.

but youre very right i think- you shouldnt get caught in the idea that everything you make needs to be 100% unique and new. so much code out there is the same thing and if you see something interesting theres no harm in grabbing it to take a look and use it. but truly, after learning what things meant its made my journey far easier. i can go use themes and understand generall how they work, i can look at other people's codes and see what they do and actually kinda understand it. thats the important part more than anything, knowing the general idea so you can explore further even if it means googling things randomly when you dont know how to do them.

nooot sure if this topic exists in some form, but i was thinking about this as some random people i follow elsewhere try to dive into website making. and i see a lot of things people are doing that is making them struggle a lot, things that i did too. of course the journey to website making and learning it all yourself is quite a journey, and not exactly a smooth one! and i dont regret where i got. but i do wish i stopped myself from making some mistakes that hindered my progress quite a lot lol. getting ahead of myself, being overly confident and thinking "nah, i dont need to learn this" only to circle back and learn it because without it my website was a broken mess...

what are things you wish you were able to tell yourself earlier on to d:ha:not to do? what mistakes did you make, and inform others to consider when making a website?

my advice to myself and others is: dont use a site template if you seriously know nothing of setting up a webpage... no matter how easy it is made to use- if you dont know html or whatever, youre probably going to break it, and when you do, you wont have any clue why or how to fix it lol... i tried to use templates after doing some insanely basic html but didnt get css and all the settings. any attempt to customize it past colors broke it, and i didnt know why! and when i asked for help i didnt know enough to really understand the potential solutions i was being offered either.

i think templates are great actually but, boy is it good to know some stuff if you want to do anything more wish them. its been much more beneficial to understand at least some of it, so that i can fix the errors or at the very least pin down where i went wrong.

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: Do you "go online" any more?
« on: July 13, 2022, 09:47:25 pm »
its certainly true to me that i feel like being online has become the default more than anything, and when covid started it really made me feel worse and worse as i was sucked into doing nothing but head over to my PC for entertainment while also feeling increasingly bored because it was always the same. creative burn outs didnt help and the format and pressure of social media was making it worse and worse. i wanted to feel that sort of old way, in the sense that going online was a choice and an option to spice up my day, rather than the "well, here we go again" like im unable to pull myself away from this default state of being online.

bigger problem was after high school and dropping college, i had basically nothing else to interrupt the path to my computer desk and that was definitely creating an issue in trying to fight off the default state of online. but in the last few years of pandemic its allowed me to think way harder about it and try to figure out what to do in order to find that old way of thinking. it will never be exactly the way it was, with how technology and internet has changed so much.

with how much time i spend on my PC it felt impossible to fix this problem, when the internet was just There and i had little other options being isolated at home with no ability to go out easily. but ive slowly been trying to find ways to restructure my daily activities and above all, find things to do on my PC that arent just loading up the browsers and refreshing social media or youtube all day. like coding, looking into the retro tech i want to collect and mess with old PCs, more mindfully indulging in digital media/video games/etc (avoid the 'repetition and numbers make my brain stimulated' due to it creating the mindless online drive of refreshing social media. its not bad, but i like to be aware of when i fall into that).

i realized personally that i love computers, i love being in online spaces. but the "default"-ness of it made me bored. and finding other interests 'around' my computer and online space has reminded me what i love about all of it while giving my a much needed freshness to the online environments. i can make 'going online' fun again by reminding myself i can break the repetition. it will never be what it was, but being mindful of how i take it all in has helped me enjoy it unlike the months and years leading up to now where i started to question why i was even here.

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Re: Making a start page?
« on: July 13, 2022, 09:14:08 pm »
oh this is such a nice idea! i dont know why i hadnt thought it of it. i had been trying to customize my start page before and had been using addons on firefox like speeddial in the past. but boy, yeah, i should get on making my own start page after seeing this!

I agree with everything here! It sounds like what you really want is some sort of folder you can put your images in, then run a command and it will resize your images and create a html page with them all in a big grid?

There is a big of a learning curve tio it, but prob the best way to do that is Eleventy: https://www.11ty.dev/docs/tutorials/
Annd its got dedicated support for image editing: https://www.11ty.dev/docs/plugins/image/
Then you can plop it all on whatever host you like.

It can be a bit of a pain to learn, but since your site is simple and you have THE WILL! You could prob do it in a weekend

yes, thats essentially what id like to have-- as much as i like the simplicity of what i code now, i know down the line it would be good to make sure its easy to manage even if the coding of such a gallery is a bit more complicated than what i currently know. i will certainly look into the above, since it sounds like quite an ideal way to have it set up mostly for the long term!

I just wanted to point out that you can usually get away with far more compression in your images than you usually expect. There are a number of different compression methods depending on what image types you're using, so you might want to read up on those as well.
[...]
In the past I also went the off-site route since my old host (Atspace.com) had a limit on filesizes and I had a handful of images that were too large for them. The one bit of advice I'd offer is maybe to go paid with the image provider, so that you don't loose anything. I did not, and years later when I went to retrieve files that I had neglected over the years, my image host had deleted my account and I lost those few files. Just something to keep in mind.

thats very true, i know for a fact i could probably compress my images a bit, and i dont often care too much about sizes as long im not scrunching it down from 1200px to like 500px. and thats also a very good reminder too, i would hate to lose stuff like that so i do want to make sure i know what im doing before i dump a ton of files somewhere, but i also have loadsss of space on my PC so offline back ups hopefully wont be a problem (i have like.... 8 TB of space, which is why i id like to host myself if i can!)

« on: July 12, 2022, 02:22:51 am »
Two tips: Don't use the official Minecraft launcher but instead use PolyMC, it's a lightweight launcher that allows you to have multiple installations at the same time, install modpacks with one click, and much more! It makes playing Minecraft less of a pain.

Also also, try playing modpacks! That's the best way to ensure you get super invested in it in the long run honestly.

oh, thank you! i have been more curious about mods this time around so this sounds very useful. its been so long since i played i forgot my PC is actually *good* and can finally use shaders, even! the more they have changed things the more annoyed i get (like the force to convert my mojang account to microsoft...) so i look forward to trying this launcher!

thank you guys for the replies! definitely giving me a proper idea of what direction to go, and how to find more information on What it is i want (since i dont know the termonology for everything when i think of it lol). it seems like hosting images on my own server is what i had in mind, and something i will certainly have to learn about. i have a means to host such a thing i just need to... read up on it!

well, a couple weeks ago i finally picked up one game sitting in my library, Disco Elysium. i was always curious but like many games in my library, i hadnt been 'hooked' on anything to specific so i never jumped into it. but when i read a little more details i decided to finally get on it, since i was really looking for a story heavy game. and boy oh boy, it blew me away.

as to not ramble about it too much in this post- ill just say i have played almost 100 hours and done multiple playthrough now, and im not sure when i will get off this wild ride lol. i have other games i really want to play but im utterly attached to this game right now...

but on the opposite end of the spectrum i have been slowly revisiting minecraft! i have been watching some youtubers i used to watch ten years ago play it, and wanted to casually slip back into it. its been a long time and uhhh yeah im very unfamiliar with all the new content in it :ohdear: im so confused.... take me back to beta 1.8 (which i may do for fun, since the launcher supports all the old versions!)

im surprised to say i didnt grow up with nintendo more when i was little (born 99) but rather playstation, and i just cant deny that the ps2 is my top gaming console of all time. i didnt have a nintendo console until the wii (but did have a DS lite- and id label that as the best handheld console for me tbh!) and spent soooo much time on the ps2. the array of video games through the years for that console still keeps me entirtained and even by the time it was "dying" i was still buying games for it even though they were supported on consoles like ps3 and xbox360 haha.

admittedly i have always been a playstation person and still frequently play ps3 and ps4- but ps2 sits at the top just for the library of games and the many more i have yet to play. i do feel like i fell out of consoles like wii after some time even if i loved them, but the ps2 i still easily go back to.

hiii back with another "help" thread or i guess "direct me to the best methods because i cant figure out what to do" thread.

ive been meaning to basically setup a gallery on my website, because i really dont want to link back to my social media, but i cant consider moving those links until i have actually....put art on my website. but with the loads and loads of art i have, the large high res files, and the overwhelming prospect of all the things i will need to throw on a page- im just not sure what way is efficient with my limited coding knowledge.

my vision is a grid layout with small thumbnails that can be clicked to open a pop up (not a new page or tab- jut over the existing page?) of the full image. the grid of thumbnails also getting longer on the page, the more i add i guess.

but i want to make sure this page 1) wouldnt take a horrendously long time to loads 2) wont fill up and insane amount of space on neocities-- im unsure if i should just be... uploading all the art to neocities, or if there is some remote way to connect this? not sure how to word that, basically i dont want to upload all my pieces to my neocities profile because i know it would take a lot of space.

lastly i dont know much in the way of details to coding galleries at all, and i will try to look into it. mostly wonder though if thsi concept would work, and how easy or complex it would be.... and suggestions/tips on hosting an art gallery on a web page like this too so that it is efficient and functional!
