Glad to see a fellow Artix user! I've started using it recently and I feel like it's my favourite distro at this point. Installed a version with preconfigured XCFE desktop and it's like a golden mean for me as I didn't had to set up most of the boring and problematic things but it's still kept simple and clean, doesn't have all the bloat from "user friendly" distros like Mint or Manjaro. What are your feelings about that?
I gotta add a disclamer if you buy that T430! It’s from 2012 so it’s twice the age of the one I suggested. In terms of value it’s a really bad deal; it’ll struggle to use the modern web, YouTube in particular I think I would have a hard time; so if you need it to be useful for everyday stuff, you’ll find yourself replacing it much sooner. I don’t recommend it at all
Actually, I won't agree with you. I'm not sure about the value, as I don't know current laptop prices too good, but T430 should be pretty good for browsing modern web, especially if you install some distro of Linux on it. Personally I use a budget laptop from 2015 and it's ok and member of my family uses T430 daily and is pretty happy with it - even with Windows 10 as the OS. You can even use an older laptop, just need to get an SSD and decent amount of RAM (for Windows satisficing experience starts from 8GB). What is also notable, older thinkpads are usually more expandable and easier to repair, keep this in mind.
For those not believing 10 year old hardware is still good I have a quite interesting video. Of course using laptops like the guy's from the video is already bit extreme and they are definitely not the best value, but gives some idea how slow hardware becomes obsolete these days.
I've read you post once more and I have to agree that T430 will require replacement much sooner, you got the point here. But it depends on the price you get it for.
Uhhh, hadn't been there for a while. Noticed the Linux:Windows users ratio is slightly diffrent than I thought, so I'm here to correct the statistics a bit
Some browsers, especially old ones, cannot display images, or have serious formatting issues with them. Some others display only text by design, like text based browsers for your terminal;
I approve. I don't use it much, but I love websites which are usable with lynx. I like command line solutions in general.
Also it's good you've mentioned weak machines and people with slow internet connection. Even for me, sometimes loading a heavy website with high-res images and JavaScript is a pain, and not on a dial-up speeds, but on my cellular connection or school WiFi. Can't even imagine how slow must it be for people who have only acces to non-LTE cellular network or other slow mediums. Not even speaking of weak machines like feature phones or old PCs and their low resolution displays (browsing on 1366x768 can already be a pain).
Minesweeper. I don't play games much, but it's always nice to clear a board or two between other more boring and more important activities. I also enjoy the mobile version included in the Google Play Games app. It'd be nice to get into Minesweeper speedrunning sometime in the future though I think there are better ways to spend my always too little time.
I like the list you created, I agree that you can play a lot of good games not spending big bucks on them.
Though, I'd add two things here. Firstly, you can buy not the latest but relatively modern games quite cheap during sales - for example The Witcher 3 is regularly discounted to less than 10 bucks (even less in most currencies). Then you can likely run it on your potato using some tricks and optimizations. LowSpecGamer covered a lot of titles and hardware, his old videos are available on a playlist here.
Also, if you have some old PC maybe you can upgrade it cheaply by buing some cheapo discrete GPU which is better than your Intel HD 2000 or do some modding to replace your Core 2 Duo to a Xeon from the same period.
Sounds like your local RA are a bunch of squares. It sounds like a cool dream. I wish there were more indoor spaces to hang out IRL without feeling like you've gotta keep buying food/drink.
Not strictly related, but you've just reminded me of arcade game rooms, of the times when playing games didn't mean sitting in your hideout and not talking to anyone but you could actually meet people IRL. It was kind of waste of money though. I've never experienced such places and I'm kind of upset that there isn't anything like that in my area.
without having to just delete everything in index.html and move in the code from home.html?
What's the problem with this method? I mean, there may be some workarounds for this, but renaming home.html to index.html would be the easiest and the best IMHO, especially since you don't have any links to home.html on subpages.
I really like weird food too, though where I live you won't find much of it in stores. However, I really enjoyed ChaiKola and ChaiMate soda, not sure if they're available anywhere outside Poland. They're actually just tea drinks, but are really close to normal "chemical" sodas, being very tasty and still affordable.
