☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: How do GIFS make you feel?
« on: October 10, 2022, 07:42:20 pm »
I love gifs and anyone who thinks they're cringe can fight me. I just don't always think they should be overused otherwise it becomes difficult to navigate at least for me personally, but websites loaded with gifs are still expressive on their own and I respect that.

I see them as just another tool for expression like any other graphics and sometimes they're just nice to look at and I at least never felt any irony when I used them because for me they're just fun. If I add video game sprites to my website or little pixel gifs it's because I like them and I think they look cool. There might be some nostalgia but in my case that nostalgia comes from liking the style more than anything and wanting to honor it.

I don't really have a particular favorite gif but there's a couple old internet Pokemon ones which are very beloved, and I also like pixel gifs in general as well as gifs from video games. There's also a couple nice technology ones I saved to use on my site later, and I love those detailed background gifs too.

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / What game would you want to be remastered?
« on: October 06, 2022, 04:59:03 pm »
I was talking to a friend about how I wish Magi Nation for the GBC would be remastered, so I wanted to ask to see if anyone has their own personal games they'd like to see remastered even if it probably won't happen.

My reasons for wanting some kind of remaster of Magi Nation is mostly because I'd love to hear a remastered version of the soundtrack and because a lot of the issues with that game come from the game being slow (which was because of hardware limitations) and because saving is a pain. It would never happen because this game is rarely talked about and the company behind it is probably long defunct but hey.

I've got a homebrewed 3DS myself too, but lately I've been playing a lot of DS and earlier games especially rom hacks lol

It might be the expected answer but it's probably a tossup between Super Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Sun/Moon, both are just fun to play for me with PSMD having a big post game that's easy to pick up casually and SuMo being a great region and pushing the 3DS to its limits. I haven't actually played a SMT game but I might check it out next time I pop out the SD card

(I'm still playing this I just need to yell)

Recently I've been playing Magi Nation for the GBC after playing it years ago in high school and it's actually a lot of fun. I can understand why it was reviewed so poorly because playing this game on real hardware would be a nightmare, there can be over an hour between possible save points and there's a lot of backtracking and times where the games' a little slow, but with save states and turbo features most emulators have it's a nice playthrough.

The sprite work is also really good for a game on the GBC. It has a nice fantasy environment that actually feels more engaging to me than most gameboy games I've played and while the areas are a little long for navigation (and why it needs turbo sometimes) it kind of adds to the immersion of exploring a fantasy world like that. The same goes for the music, which for the technology goes along great with the areas. The sprites for the monsters are also all great and there's quite a few designs that I like. The gameplay is more based on a card game system so it can feel a lot more strategic than Pokemon does since you need to balance your energy with your own attacks and summoning abilities.

The dialogue also isn't as bad as you'd expect, it actually kind of made me laugh a couple times. It really does feel like the main character is a teenager who was plucked from our world and I mean that in a good way. There's also secrets both with characters and with areas.

I'll check out the GBA game at some point since I think there's a translated patch, but I really think the game could have had potential if it were able to continue as a series. A lot of the flaws have to do with hardware limitations or something that just feels like it could use some ironing out. I saw a couple mentions that it feels like the game pushes the hardware to its limits and that might be why it can be slow for loading sometimes.

I'd really recommend it if you like monster games of GC games, just with a tool that has save states. it's really an underrated game.

I've also decided to check out the other media and while I can't afford the cards right now the TV series sure is something. it's not good but my system has some nostalgia for it and it's kind of great for how awkward it is and how hard it's trying in some places to be a Pokemon clone. the game is actually a lot better than you would think if you know the TV series

It's a monster game based on a card game that was the developer's first project and it has no reason to be this good

I've been playing Magi Nation for the GBC

I'd recommend it if you like gameboy era monster games, it still holds up pretty good and I'm surprised how obscure it seems to be

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: Let's talk about FORUMS!
« on: July 12, 2022, 03:32:59 pm »
When my system was younger we used to hang around various Pokemon forums, off the top of my head Pokefarm, Floatzel.net (I think), Pokecharms, etc. As a teen we joined a lot of otherkin forums and the only one I can remember is Kinmunity, which is still up. We also played on a lot of petsites as a teen and used the connected forums.

There's a lot of forums I wish I could join, but don't allow multiple accounts or are tied to an account of a game which doesn't allow multiple accounts. It's really uncomfortable to need to sign off constantly.

(Thankfully Kinmunity recently lifted the ban and allows multiple accounts only for systems, so I made an account and I've been using it recently)

For me it's either the Webkinz beta or the Ruby and Sapphire beta

For Webkinz it seems extremely unlikely that we'll see anything more from it especially since the creators don't seem to care about preservation of the site, but Webkinz in 3D sounds interesting

For Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire it has to be coming at some point because we have had like 1 major gen 1 leak, several major gen 2 leaks, 2 major gen 4 leaks, but absolutely nothing for gen 3. I'm mostly just curious if Latiken was going to be an evolved form of Torchic and what beta Combusken might have been like.

Just Firefox because the containers tab is a semi-needed accessibility option for me and my system and it's easier than the alternatives. I might use Chrome with my Chromecast but that's all I use it fo

Saving those lol

I've been tempted to try to make a Zine for awhile but it probably wouldn't be something to sell, and would probably be along the lines of a digital zine or something like that.

I really don't know but given how much I bike around and like to explore around the cities I live near, I feel like I'd probably be a Pokemon trainer but would be too lazy to go for anything more ambitious and do competitions before managing whatever winnings I get to lay around for a month.

Since where I live is very swampy I feel as if I'd get like an Oddish, Mudkip, and Toxel to start and then later get a Mantine. I want to say I'd have a Porygon or Rotom but those might be too expensive in the Pokemon world.

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: Can a website be "useless"?
« on: June 21, 2022, 03:52:29 pm »
I've spoken about how some people use Neocities as a replacement to Carrd and using that to bring in internet discourse and how that's frustrating (no one wants to be browsing neocities and get hit with a dni that includes something they are), but I wouldn't say they need to delete their site and not make one but rather that they need to expand on it and be more creative. I don't think it's that they're boring but just that the internet has grown to really enforce this Carrd-like structure as a bio and the idea is that you want to be able to look at a person's business card and get as much information as you can about them.

This is kind of also why I'm all for trying to reduce the strain of trying to make a website perfect. The internet is this super over-competitive space for any kind of hobby or interest. When I introduce people to Neocities I say that they don't need to make it perfect and that a website can start as anything and be expanded on later.

Although most of these issues I recognize come from the modern internet and the mentalities that it generates. I don't feel people are uncreative and just that for most people, especially those who started using the internet after maybe 2008, don't have as much of a basis for what being creative with a website can be because everything has taken the slope to becoming more corporate and same and personal sites aren't the only things effected by this.

Those are just my thoughts though. I'm not sure how coherent they are since I'm a bit tired but hey it's the internet, a part of it is speaking your mind

I know so much about the internet history of otherkin, therians, and systems.

This was a SUPER interesting read! I think the evolution of web based cultures and communities (Particularly when they evolve into alternative perceptions of identity) is one of the most interesting things of the last 50 years and I would never have known about these ones without this post. Id love to hear more!
 :omg:

Thank you! I don't really have too much else to say, but I'd recommend House of Chimera's website since they have a lot more archival of alterhuman history and documents about it written by them and others

Oh thats super cool! Im doing a public talk soon to about websites, so Iv been preparing material as well. Iv got 2 objectives with my talk;
1. To introduce people to the idea of the web revival even if they have never heard or seen anything like it before.
2. To inspire people to get involved in it and take it seriously as a platform for art and a medium of art.

I think people like stories, so Im gonna try and weave a story based on my own philosophy and how I got into website making. Then I'm gonna mix that in with some fun examples of sites I made to keep it engaging. This is also partly why I wrote my website making guide, I wanted to clarify my ideas and get things really accessible for anyone hearing my talk; maybe there's a few things in there that would be helpful to you too.
I don't know any other systems personally, but Id sure like to see more of them around! So best of luck, Im sure you'll do great :4u:

That's along the lines of what we were thinking too, along with the history and importance of websites in the past. A part of why we know so much that we do now is because people made websites documenting their experiences and what their thoughts were on community discourse at the time

We may include your site as a citation, thank you! Good luck to you too :4u:
