RSS used to be very popular in the early 2000 as a way to keep up with updates from any place of the internet. The idea is incredibly simple: want to keep up with a website's updates? Subscribe to its RSS feed.
Things changed with social media. Since social media allows you to subscribe to other people, they almost made RSS obsolete. RSS itself became hard to follow with multiple forks and versions, and a newcomer called Atom.
Yet, feeds are still used. I feel they're even becoming more popular now that the web is slowly moving away (at least, I hope!) from centralized platforms.
I would love to hear how you use feeds today! Do you maintain one for your homepage? What feed reader do you use?

DoctorScreech after thinking about it quite a lot, I think it's best if I disable <script> tags within profiles on status.cafe. Mostly from a security stand point. It opens the door to different sort of exploits and unfortunately, it's safer for all if I just remove it. So I did it! However, it's only on new updates of the about me field. NetSpeed will still be on your profile until you update it.
Thank you Nightdrift! I originally wanted to create an abstract dungeon crawler. Each square we run to is supposed to be a staircase that goes deeper in the dungeon.

Thanks Nightdrift for the feedback! About the ease of registration, I don't know how long I'll be able to keep it open like this. I'm afraid that once some malicious user finds the link, they can decide to infinitely create accounts. It happened to me on ichi.city. I'm not entirely sure what the best way to protect against that is, besides just making it invite-based. Great profile, by the way!
I think success means different things to different people. For some, success means a lot of visits, a lot of subscriptions, perhaps even some monetary value if your website sells something. While I understand people who think this way, I don't view a side-project the same way as I would see a business.
While the main goal of a business is to generate revenue, I think the main goal of a side-project is to have fun. Even better if we learn a thing or two while having fun. And if we meet awesome people while at it? Great! I think projects are a way to explore our creativity, to try new things, to build useless stuff because we can. It's the one place where we don't need an actual metric other than enjoying doing it.
Popularity on internet is a weird beast to say the least. I would trade a hundred of likes for a single meaningful interaction with someone who takes time to read and react to something you create. A little like I'm doing here!
I like Melon's idea on a website to provide gif graphics and that allows people to submit their own. I'm sure it'd be incredibly useful for everyone building their site.
I wasn't sure where the best place was to post this, but I figured this board looks super comfy. I just finished a side-project called status.cafe. It's a place where we can share our current status. It's heavily inspired by imood and SpaceHey.
There aren't many features, but there are some:
Your profile page can be completely customized with HTML and CSS, a little like this one from dream
There's a bookmarklet that lets you update your status from anywhere
There's a widget that lets you show your latest status on your homepage, like what I added at the top of mine.
You can subscribe to any person you'd like with Atom
And that's it! It's still very new and I'm sure I'll be tweaking quite a lot in the coming weeks, but from a feature standpoint, I think it's complete. I want it to stay simple and last for years ahead, and nothing beats simplicity for that.
It helped me wrap my head around how it works. Really liking how you've simplified things to their essence, and how you used the right level of detail of an introduction. I'm still looking for a little inspiration on what world to build now.
By the way, anyone that wants more than 10MB of space to host a virtual world on ichi.city, let me know.
I've never finished an RPG Maker game, but I remember my friend and I working on one. We tried to reproduce a Role Playing game our friend group played. One of us was building the graphics while the other the game itself. And while we didn't finish it, all the fun was in the creation. Building something is weirdly addictive! The prospect of sharing the creation with people is as well.

Thanks for the link! Almost makes me want to start working on a simple game engine. I started to create a little MMORPG a few months back. And while a whole MMO is too much time commitment, perhaps extracting a little game engine can be a nice project.
You probably haven't heard of NetSpeed yet, mainly because it was my last week-end project.
NetSpeed is a game you can play on the net and it's all about speed. As the blue square, you need to quickly go to the green square. Then to the next green square. Then to the next. You only have 30 seconds, so how many green square will you go through?
