I'm considering getting a custom domain too, wondering if it's worth it.

The good thing about CAT flip phones is that they are flip phones and have a keyboard but from what I have seen in this video they are still much bigger than the original flip phones from back in the day. So are they really ergonomic?

Just to update on this, I didn't get it. I got a Unihertz Titan Pocket instead.

Generally, I just find modern design and user experience cumbersome and inefficient so my workflow naturally draws me toward older programs and hardware.

Same here. I still use GIMP 2.6 for digital art because the new interface they introduced after that gave me a headache. I also still use MS Paint XP for simple editing!

I recently got the "complete" box-set from a flea market a while back. (Quotation marks because it was released before the revival)

I love Futurama, it's one of the funniest shows I've ever watched!

Lucky! I can never find a good DVD set where I live.

I think this one REALLY depends on which side of Tumblr you are on. Meaning, like, fandom, aesthetic, etc. etc.

'Cause the amount of long-reads on Tumblr is considerable in my experience. Especially if it's fandom meta or angry rants on social issues or excited infodumps on favorite topics or history posts or 'science side of Tumblr'... And there's also a whole genre of posts like these, whatever they'd be called (link is from a random blog I found when looking up the post sorry). There's also writebr, aka the side of Tumblr populated only by writers posting snippets of their work or taking writing prompts and such. And so on and so forth.

That's to say that I think a lot of people actually do use Tumblr like a proper blogging platform and comparison to Twitter is not an exactly fair one, in my opinion.

Also, as far as "sharing pictures" goes, yes, gifsets are Really Popular, but also... You just can't do a Tumblr style gifset on another platform. One gif/four images per post only? Blasphemy!

Well, I guess I stand corrected, then. I was only on there a relatively short time, so my experience is limited.

Same here. It seems like an evolution of LiveJournal or maybe MySpace, but I was never into those either. The only blog service I ever used was Blogger, but I think Tumblr is more community focused? Instead of creating an isolated blog for your thoughts each post is public in a way, like you're having a conversation instead of a monologue. Or maybe I'm way off.

Funny, I actually remember seeing some articles that claimed that Tumblr was basically "The new MySpace". I think I get where they were going with having a social site with customizated personal pages and all, but I think the big difference between Tumblr and MySpace, as well as other journal/blogging sites like Blogger and LJ is that Tumblr is more of a microblog, as in it's focused on sharing pictures and brief texts and reblogging others than it really is writing about yourself (or whatever you want to write about). So I guess in a sense it's more like Twitter with MySpace-esque page layouts?

I've also heard it referred as "the new GeoCities", but that seems more off to me.

« on: January 24, 2023, 03:28:13 am »
This is how I feel about the upcoming Dead Space remake. The original game still looks and plays great in my opinion. The graphics in the remake look like they've lost all sense of style. The lighting is more realistic, but less cinematic. And making the whole station seamless just reminds me of all the games that went open world because it's trendy and not because it actually adds anything.

Yeah, seriously. That's another thing; A lot of remakes (not all of them) will kill the original aesthetic and charm that I find appealing in the first place for the sake of "modernization". Some people may not care, but for me it can detract from the overall experience.

It's certainly easier these days I'd say to find and join communities, put information about yourself out in the open through a bio, and get discovered through that on social media, more than it is on the indie web where discoverability and community is very limited and expressing yourself takes a lot of work.

Customization and freedom of content, form and style is one thing, but we can't deny that modern social media allows people to build their own "brand" with their identity a lot more: pride flags in profile pictures, viral posts, discoverability, and so on.

For example, if I had an Instagram account, it would take me only ten minutes to set it up, put my identity in my bio or in the profile picture, upload aesthetic selfies of myself with relevant hashtags, and make some short posts outlining my thoughts, ideas, hobbies and opinions. In comparison, you'd need an entire "about me" page or a blog with pictures and information on your website to express yourself like that, which is hard to create and not even front and center for people who visit you.

Eh, I think that has more to do with with branding one's self and getting discovered more than actual self expression. If my bigger concern is getting people to notice me, then I guess it works for that. But to actually express myself and make something my own, I feel having a personal webpage is much better for that.

Depends on how you see it I guess.

Hey you guys, let's not derail the thread now, shall we? I sense the start of a heated discussion. Better if you take it to PM if so you wish

Okay then.

@/home/user/ if you want to continue this feel free to email or PM me. Please keep in mind that I'm not trying to attack anyone but I'm just stating my opinions that you don't have to agree with.

I'll often listen to either game soundtracks or 90's pop/dance.

I've been on there since 2012 and well. It's better now but I'll be honest, Tumblr's biggest problem has always been the absolutely despicable people who use it. I left it for about 2 years because it was like. The acephobia was everywhere. I won't go into details since the rules of this site but it was really, REALLY bad. And no, you couldn't escape it by just following different people, it was like everyone in every fandom wanted to make it clear they were making fun of the stupid little aceys (a "slur" they invented for this purpose). You could really see the effect on an independent social media platform called Pillowfort, like a huge chunk of the people on there are asexuals and it's so clear they were escaping the harassment campaign.

OMG this. I used to use it for a while and I think I remember seeing some of this kind of stuff.
quite ironic considering much of the community there claimed to be for "equality" and "acceptance" and boasted about it constantly.
Sure...

Another thing is, I don't know if it's still an issue since it's been years since I've used it, but I remember the porn bots were really bad on there, and I would often get followed/messaged by them.
(I mean yeah, if you like that stuff then good for you, but this was just creepy and invasive.)

I agree with the overall sentiment, but why throw kink in the pile of things to attack? If it's consensual, there's no reason to shame people for being happy with their partners. I think that's rather problematic.

What bothers me more is people like to show it out in the open and don't care how it can be uncomfortable/disturbing to others. If you dare to express any discomfort or disgust then you're automatically attacked and accused of "kinkshaming".

14
Now there's a lot easier ways of expressing yourself on social media.

How is it easier to express yourself on barebones social media platforms where customization is practically nonexistant and content is greatly limited?
