☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / You've Got Mail!
« on: January 23, 2022, 07:56:17 pm »
So I'm not sure if you know, but in the Thunderbird mail client you can set a custom audio file to play when you get an email. I have mine set to play the classic AOL "You've Got Mail". THE ONLY ISSUE is that my audio clip is really compressed and REALLY LOUD! So instead of being a quaint nostalgic thing its more like a constant existential fear. I might be listening to music or watching a movie while connected to big speakers and all is fine in the world and then the You've Got Mail voice of doom will arrive to split ear drums, shatter windows and wake up dogs within a 20km radius.

Anyway, I hope you all appreciate and fear the You've Got Mail voice as I do.

☆ ∙ Showcase & Links / New video project! Archive of 4659 Sites
« on: January 22, 2022, 11:00:51 pm »
This is a short project Iv been working on this week, its basically a screenshot of the first page of 4 thousand sites selected from Daniel's Net. I setup a script capturing them which took about 2 days to finish! I'll attach the script below for anyone interested in copying it.

Here is the video please enjoy! Or you can open it here in a new tab.

Greetings, if you're reading this you might be new here! This is a board for introducing yourself and saying hello, or if you've been away for a while and want to reintroduce yourself that's cool too!
Just create a new topic, it can follow any format but some recommendations are:

  • Tell us about yourself?
  • What are you into?
  • Do you have a site or a blog?
  • What do you love most about making things on the web? (or off the web!)

Looking forward to meeting you :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :omg:k:

:defrag: :defrag: :defrag: Hi all, a quick guide here with a free script!

As some of you know Im a fan of frames sites, those are sites that use the frameset system for page layout. If you need help with frames have a look at my site and a look at this tutorial too https://www.tutorialspoint.com/html/html_frames.htm.

The big issue with frameset sites though is that they don't save browser history properly, you cant share links to sub pages and the back button does not work.. crappy stuff! BUT I have a fix for all of that and I'll share it here! Example: Instead of just going to https://melonking.net/melon, you can now visit https://melonking.net/melon?z=/links to jump to a particular framed page.

PREMADE TEMPLATE:
I have attached "frames-template.html" this is a template frame site layout you can download and use! It also explains a little about how to modify the frames! (If you download the template you don't need to install the script yourself, its pre-setup :grin:smile:

How to Install (Works for iFrame sites tooo!!)
Add this code to the <head> of your frameset page or main page containing your iFrame (Typically your index.html)
Code
<script src="https://melonking.net/scripts/frame-link.js"></script>

Then add id="mainframe" to your main <iFrame> or Frameset <frame> tag.

Done!

Optional Steps
Optional: Create a second <script></script> section AFTER you link the frame-link.js
Optional: add updateTitle = false; if you want to disable title updating. (Default is true)
Optional: add titlePrefix = "My Site "; if you want to add a prefix to your titles. (Default is none)
Optional: add pageParam = "z"; if you want to change the url path of your pages. (Default is z)
Optional: if you use a Hit Counter add hitCounterFunction = function () { XXX MY HIT COUNTER CODE }, this function will automatically be called each time someone click a page, so you can log per page hits within your frame.

The GoatCounter documentation is currently offline, so I cant provide a pre-made hitCounterFunction for you, but I'll add one in the future if the documentation ever comes back!

So this is a quick post about a little study I conducted on a recent design change to GifyPet, its more of a quick note but I think there could be an intresting discussion around it.

On GifyPet I replaced my Melonking ad:

From this:

To this:

I then took note of the traffic coming from GifyPet to Melonking.Net before and after the change! And here are the results:

To me it seems pretty clear, following this image change, waayyy less people went from gifypet to melonking.net, yet to me both those banners look pretty good, I like both! I also ran this test again on Melonking.Net, I changed the navigator "Melon's Universe" to "Stuff", since that edit that page gets about 4x more hits.

I suppose in the case of the gifypet ad, the older one was more direct, and "Stuff" is more relatable than "Melon's Universe", but its interesting that these small design elements can have such a big impact on how people interact with a site.

It also raises the question, should we care? As people making retr:ha:weird and otherwise not usability optimized sites, is this something we should even worry about at all? I'm curious to hear your thoughts and learn if you've ever done such a test?

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / What does a successful project mean to you?
« on: December 05, 2021, 06:19:47 pm »
So a back story; In 2019 my site was at position #3 on the Neocities websites list, and I was scared to update it, because I didn't want to do anything to detract from it. These days its slipped down that board a bit and I finally feel like an can reclaim it and start having fun again.

Looking back; for me having a "successful" site was a mixed experience, I loved the feedback and sense of value it gave me (and still gives me), but popularity also stole my site from me.

In a world where on the web you can have an almost unlimited amount of attention, is attention really something to shoot for? If its not a good metric for the success of something, what should be?

How do you think about the success or lack of success of your projects? Do you find it enough to make things for yourself, or do you balance that out with what the wider world wants? What kind of feedback do you hope for from your work and why?

Hi all, if you don't already know, a webgarden is a mini site that people can include in an iframe on their site as a fancy link to you!

Many people put all the webgardens they like on a special collection page called a greenhouse.
For example this is my greenhouse: https://melonking.net/webgarden/greenhouse.html

And this is my webgarden code:
Code
<iframe src="https://melonking.net/webgarden.html" scrolling="no" style="width:250px; height:250px;border:2px solid yellow;"></iframe>

You can lean more about the idea on miss mosses site here: https://missmoss.neocities.org/webgardens/tutorial/

One of the issues with webgardens though is that it can be hard to actually find them, SO!!!
Please post your webgarden below AND/OR link your greenhouse to show it off!

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / TinyTIM - A cool multiplayer text adventure
« on: November 23, 2021, 10:42:00 pm »

Hi, I just wanted to give some love to TinyTIM a really strange multiplayer text adventure / MUD / MUSH (Multi user shared hallucination) Tim is a text based world where you can explore and make your own rooms and setup things that will happen in the rooms and write stories for them and more.

Screenshot:

How do I play!
If you just want to try it out you can use an online telnet client like this one: Online Client
Just connect using host: yay.tim.org port: 5440

If you want to really get into it I recommend using Mudlet, a free text adventure client you can get on Mac, Windows and Linux. ALSO it comes with connection details for a bunch of other text adventures.
You can get it here!

Let me know if you try it out and what you get up to, AND/OR if you enjoy any MUDs.

PaY PhOne spOTtinG 👀 👀 👀 📸

This idea is loosely based on 2600 Magazine, they have a page dedicated to picture of payphone sent in by readers. I find Iv taken to spotting payphones wherever I go, soon there may be none left :notgood: Be aware, payphone spotting is a valid and serious sport and you can and will become rich doing it!!

If you spot a payphone in your local area or on your travels, take a picture of it and post it here! Together we will save the payphones (in picture form)

This is a special announcement! You may report the bugs below!

How to report a bug:
  • Describe the bug!
  • Describe how you found the bug.
  • Describe what you expected to happen if the bug had not been there.
