☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Weird local festivals and events
« on: August 12, 2022, 12:24:46 pm »
There has been major drama in local news recently because the Puck King had to be removed from his cage early due to high temperatures!

Background: Every year a wild goat is captured and crowned the Puck King (Goat King) by a local virgin (Puck Queen) and hung in a cage in a town center for a weekend for the Puck Fair (A street party and market where many goods are traded). No one is really sure why this happens, but its been occurring for at least 500 years but probably goes back another 1000. All n all its a great time if you enjoy fairs and king goats.

(Image shows Puck King being crowned in the 1980s)

I suppose there must be many strange fairs out there, and maybe we should start a few weird web-fairs. Are there any unusual events near you?

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Playdate! (mini console)
« on: August 08, 2022, 06:32:40 pm »
After a FULL year of waiting since ordering, my Playdate finally arrived today

For those of you who dont know, the Playdate is a small limited run handheld console made by Panic; weirdly the same company that makes my fav website editor (Nova) but most people know them more for making Firewatch and a dumb game about a goose I never played! The ad is cute!

It has a very reflective 2bit screen, a speaker, some buuttoons and a crank and also wifi and 4GB storage! Currently there is no midi player app but I WANT ONE; side note it would be really cool to make a web radio station that just played midis.

Also I really didn't plan to make anything for it, but now that its in my hands ooohh do i wanna make something for it :ozwomp: If you dont have one but wanna make stuff for it you can get a simulator on their dev page (its also got a game making program thing that I think lets you make games with minimal dev skills)

Iv been trying out unofficial sideloaded apps today, so far my favorite is this dumb horse racing simulator.

Its also got a cute lil planner app:

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Cool electronics shop tour from 1993
« on: August 08, 2022, 02:10:11 am »
Video tour of an electronics shop in 1993. Iv seen a few tour videos like this, but this one is really great! :dl:

Side note I have a particular softspot for 1988-1994 tech, I think its my favorite era because its kinda modern yet still super simple and clunky.

☕︎ ∙ Fun & Forum Games / MelonLand Forum dream!
« on: August 07, 2022, 12:15:51 pm »
I had a dream last night where this forum was like a physical location, it was a cool clubhouse in an abandoned warehouse, it had like canteen tables and sofas and huge dusty windows that looked out over a river and everyone was just chilling out being cool kids. (There were also an old irl friend of mine who's no longer in my life and it was nice but also weird seeing them there)

BUT then there was someone from the local residents association who was complaining that we were noisy and a bad influence on local housing values. I was like heck no we are great tenants and not noisy at all! But everyone seemed a bit worried about it :ohdear:

☆ ∙ Showcase & Links / New professional site! (Loom.Cafe)
« on: July 30, 2022, 12:35:25 am »
I wanted to share my NEW professional site - Loom.Cafe (I really hope I still like that name in 6 months..)

*Disclaimer* While I don't always approve of professional sites being mixed into the web revival (I think it sucks away the fun) I do also recognise that many people including ME need professional sites and Id like to bridge that gap if I can.

First off I was blatantly inspired by cinni.net and was originally planning to do something more like it.. but things didn't go well, and after laying on the floor contemplating the horror of external insecurity of my own talents (as one does when a website is not going well) this idea to do a pure light and dark tunnel came to me.

I wanted it to be modern, but classic, but kinda cool 2000s design company-ish, but also simple and easy to manage. Most of all I wanted it to be honest to myself and to the ideals of the web revival, but also be something that didn't need explaining to a regular person.

Anyway, all things aside Im super pleased with how its turned out  https://loom.cafe

Design Notes:

Essentially its key design feature is that its an iframe floating behind an SVG; there is a little bit of trickery with masking to make the text appear cutout; and its also not PERFECT.. for example you cant set any background other than a solid colour.. but maybe thats something that could be fixed with some sort of flexible svg? Im actually totally new to this whole svg thing!

Once its all setup and you have the fixed iframe and a few common css files to handle styling, its actually super fun to make mini pages like this; it makes my regular site feel like a major effort now! Sort of like an entire website webgarden? The smaller pages are much more forgiving than a full size page.

As for the circle! Ugh I just get sick all all the rectangles on the web sometimes; I know this is secretly still a rectangle, but I would like more orb centric websites! It adds some dead space around the edges, but its worth it.

ANYWAY #2, I hope some of you enjoy it, apologies its not another GifyPet or TextureTown, but sometimes a lil self representation is what the doctor ordered :ha:

This is a simple topic to appreciate things that make it worth being on this planet, big and small. Sometimes there a bad days, or bad months OR bad years.. but there's always something worth hanging on for. What brings meaning to your life? :ha:

For me a few things are:
  • Making things - Art, websites, bits of code, as long as I have something to make!
  • Cooking - Cooking is fun and eating really good food is always worth living for.
  • Walking and seeing places - I cant think of a time Iv ever been unhappy on a hike!

So these videos pop up on my youtube feed every now and then and Im always fascinated by them.. partly I suppose because I cant drive and I can hardly ride a bike (balance issues) but also because I really don't like cars. I don't like the noise they make or the pollution they generate, or the health impact they have on people who end up driving all the time!

There has to be a better way/ways!

Arcimoto make sort of ev-bike 3 weelers they make SUCH A COOL SOUND, they look really safe and fun.. although not great for Irish weather.. Id love to try one though!

Aptera also make sort of sci-fi 3 weelers, although they are more car-ish.. I find these a little less convincing but they look like cheesy 90s movie props which I love.

A totally great all solar van made by some dude from Australia/NZ?.. its really slow and silly, but It kinda makes you re-think travel.. its like land sailing? That makes we want to make a game about land sailing!

Those are some of my favourites; is anyone else interested in this subject, do you d:ha:think about alternative forms of transport?

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Making a start page?
« on: July 12, 2022, 11:52:55 pm »
Iv been thinking of making a start page for my browser for a while now. (Like the first page that loads when you open a browser)

I wanted to make something that was actually useful.. so it should have links to key sites that a person might wanna check.. maybe it could pull in info from status cafe, or spacehey or the neocities recent updates or something..

Then maybe even it could be customisable so some of this stuff could be modifiable and others could use it as their start page too..

So Im looking for ideas, what should a web revival start page look like, and what would it have on it? Whats your dream start page or have you already made one for yourself?

MelonLand Wiki

Hiii, ooph Iv been having one of those weeks where everything is difficult and I don't want to do anything :ohdear: BUT I did scrape together a wiki based on Ice's suggestion!

Still not 100% on the design yet  Also its very empty! So I hope you guys will write some nice things on it to fill it out more! Please create pages and add whatever you want; for now Forum Rules and Guidelines apply to the wiki too please!

Im thinking its main use is to act as a place for community guides and definitions of things; the kind of stuff thats not so well suited to a forum. Everyone is free to edit everything, however please be respective and try to add information that is widely agreed on by people here.

To start writing on it you just need to log in with your forum account, so no new account needed! Lemmy know if you have any feedback or issues!

Enjoy :4u: https://wiki.melonland.net

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Poll: What browser do you use?
« on: June 29, 2022, 01:10:12 am »
Pretty self explanatory, what browser do you like to use? Apologies if I missed your browser in the list, I tried to think of everything Iv heard of but there are lots! You can pick 2 if you use multiples regularly.

Why do you like your browser? What addons do you use in it? :pc:

Personally I use a mix of Safari and Firefox, Safari because its fast and uses very little battery, and Firefox because it its got much better addon support.
In Safari I use AdGuard
In Firefox I use uBlock, YouTube Enhancer, SponsorBlock, HTTPS Everywhere, Return Youtube Dislike and a bunch of others!

© ∙ Music Room / AMVs of the 00s !!
« on: June 28, 2022, 02:29:34 am »
Why do we not have a topic about this! I had an inexplicable obsession with Mew Mew AMVs (Anime Music Video) when I was about 14 and I was looking back at them recently (and archiving a few of my favourites).

Did you make them? They always seemed like so much work to me I was super impressed by anyone who could do them!
Do you have any favourites?

(Also fun fact I er.. sold this video as an in-game item on a game called Whirled and it was really popular! Sorry video creator from 14 years ago!)

I also loved this channel by meworeo.. their last video is a preview and I remember it was 9 months old when I first found it, and I e-mailed the channel owner asking when it would be out and im still waiting for a reply!!

Clubs, Cliques, Webrings and More!

Hellooo this is a new experimental board to help people organise groups and webrings. There are a few kinds of posts you can make here, so I'll give some examples, but this is not an exhaustive list so if you have a post that you think fits do it anyway!

  • Share links to webrings you have started or are a member of
  • Share you web club/clique (e.g. a clique for sites about ducks!)
  • Start a club, such as a book club, web design challenge club, or aesthetic vibe club

In all cases please provide the following details:
  • The name of your group
  • What the group is about and why you think its a good idea
  • Members of your group or how to join the group
  • Any graphics/links or other resources group members might need!

I hope to see lots of cool groups! But please be inclusive and friendly. :cheesy:
