Hi, welcome to the forum  :4u:

Cool site! I love the contrast and the backgrounds - plus the enforced waiting on the landing page is a great touch - that kinda non-rapid webdesign is right up my ally  (Also thank you for the links!)
Also this is an excellent intro post, I appreciate the tactical use of
spin
! Id be interested to know how sociology and computer science relate for you and why you picked them.

What a world! I hope you enjoy your time here  :ozwomp:

I'm gonna get a huge computer screen so I can just pirate movies
I would actually suggest getting a lil projector instead - for a computer you're much better off having a good hi-res but smaller screen that's ergonomic - but for movies, you don't need resolution at all, if you have a lil projector (like one of the Anker Nebula ones or even just a cheap amazon one) - it suddenly become like a whole movie watching party, and you can take it with you to friends houses! :omg:

I think @levya is pretty close to my ideal house too! Its all about light and air and feeling secure and peaceful and inspired where you are. I suppose practically its good to be near services and shops so you can get resources when you need them!

Iv also lived in a lot of tourist towns, and one of the things I love is hearing happy people outside - it makes such a huge difference when you wake up every morning to laughter and life happening just below your window. Compared to the experience most people get in high-rise apartments, where its just silence and cars noises.. its a totally different experience. Feeling connected to the world but not being overwhelmed by it is really important!

I also wanna share this house! (If you've explored my site you might have seen this before) - its a super cool cave home - Id love a cozy cave house too!

guerilla school of art
I love this phrase and I actually assumed it was an established term when you first said it! Its like Gurilla Warfare but for art, its making do with what you have, breaking a few rules when you need too, getting the job done and being creative even when conditions are not in your favor - it feels very liberating - like being a Robbin Hood of the arts

And I agree with your expanded definition; I'm not really into the economics side of the argument, simply because I think it gets in the way of the creative process (at least in my mind) - but I agree that honest reuse and adaptation is key; nothing gets done if you have to reinvent everything each time you take a step.

but don't we want to build something better with the aesthetics of old?
I was actually doing a bit of a thought experimenting recently "What if the phrase Old Web was banned on Melonland?" (dont worry it wont be); I feel like people make a mistake that we are trying to revive some lost golden age of the past web; but there was never a golden age; we are trying to revive the possibility for there to be a golden age in the future (we will never succeed, but that's what makes it an interesting challenge!) - Nostalgia is a great tool and can be very fun, but it should never be the only goal; the goal is always to find something new, and as soon as you've found it, find something new again  :dive:

Would it be possible to either change the default behaviour of Quote Selection, or have a toggle option in the settings, so that it doesn't auto-scroll the page down to Quick Reply every time you use it?
So basically, Quick Reply always focuses if its open.. its a separate bug that I cant fix - I can probably stop highlight quotes from opening it, but that would prob be extremely confusing for a lot of people, because you'd have to highlight text, quote it, then remember to scroll down and check the quick box.. Even if people could toggle it in settings I don't think it would be good interaction design.

Ideally the "Quote Selection" popup should have an extra "Add Multi Quote" option; but I have seen the code and I know it would be quite hard to add that feature; that said I put in a feature request for this with the original developer of the Quotes mod we use; but they have always ignored me, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I guess that's a way of saying; I hear you, but this probably wont get done in the near future :ok: In this case, usually what I do is multi-quote people and then edit down the quotes in the editor to just focus on the bits I want.

New Theme! - Newspaper

Hi, I am pleased to announce there is a new forum theme available! You can find it in your look-layout section.

The Newspaper theme is a slightly more modern look for the forum, its mainly aimed at people who want to enjoy discussions but don't like all the over the top text styles etc - The main focus here is readability and clarity.

It also features automatic dark mode switching based on your browser preferences! Enjoy!

Here is how your site looks for me:

And here are the files downloaded my browser:

I don't see anything about fonts in your code! So are you sure your cache cleared successfully? Its possible that your network is caching the site even if your computer is not (I dunno how to fix that if it is  )

New Moderator

Hi just writing to let people know that @xandra has been appointed as a moderator! She's been on the forum since day one and knows its vibe really well; she has also been a part of the wider web revival community for a long time and Im sure many of you know her well

Xandra is primarily acting as an advisory moderator, so she will be helping make decisions about moderation reports that get sent in; usually its me making the final call on issues like that, and it can be a big emotional drain; so its great to have some help! I hope you'll all trust her as much as I do  :ha:

Also in totally unrelated news; you can now get the forum guide link in the footer thanks to a suggestion by @Inkerlink, and I also revamped the editor code today - you wont see any differences; but there should be less lil bugs!

Would it be possible to have a link to the forum guidelines/rules put at the bottom of the page, around here somewhere maybe?:

That seems like a good idea; I guess I dont like being too pushy about the rules; but if it makes people feel more comfortable to be able to reference them, they should be easy to find.

I added some links at the bottom right  :4u:

Cinni sent me this article a long time ago and its really great In Defense of the Poor Image by Hito Steyerl
Quote
The poor image is no longer about the real thing—the originary original. Instead, it is about its own real conditions of existence: about swarm circulation, digital dispersion, fractured and flexible temporalities. It is about defiance and appropriation just as it is about conformism and exploitation.

In short: it is about reality.
Thats a totally twisted view point on image compression and I love it

I guess its an interesting idea to pre-dither or pre-compress your own images; it changes their purpose in the same way that taking a polaroid picture changes its purpose. It become about whats missing as much as whats there. I know many people in the web revival like to do it because its a way of being more anonymous while still showing your physical world; but it also kinda shows your world the way you want it to be.. its a retro world or a dream world of pixelated memories.

And then there's all the mathematic stuff going on about how the algorithm actually does the dithering; I had fun trying out dithering styles when making this lil video.

I guess Im rambling a bit, I mostly wanted to share that article, but I think its a really fascinating topic!

"This site is only viewable with Internet Explorer!" or something similar. I'm so glad that is no longer a thing!
Oh its totally a thing! "This its is only available in Chrome" is still very common - I almost put up a warning on this forum saying it was not available in Safari because Safari acts like a modern day IE and breaks all sorts of web rendering conventions - I should make a whole topic about that.. The browser wars never ended, they are just slumbering :ohdear:

Hi, just a quick moderation note - could you re-title this thread to something neutral like "Content credits and auto playing music on the old web" - its important not to make sweeping claims or assumptions about creative interpretations, and in general negative focused topics are discouraged on this forum ^^

You might enjoy this discussion (we build this city on stolen gifs)

And this one (How do you feel when someone blatantly rips off your website)
https://forum.melonland.net/index.php?topic=1093.0

Of course in general; I advocate crediting active creators when possible and making sure that their work is intended to be reused - however I think after a while that becomes impossible - sites go down, images quickly become abandonwear. I seen personal homepages as an arts practise and in arts "found objects" are a well accepted medium - so I think if you find something that appears to have been abandoned its not only acceptable to re-use it, but its preferable, it gives that object a new life!

As for auto playing music; I fully support any and all sites having unexpected auto playing music if the creator feels it conveys their message  I know that cozy is very much an aesthetic that many people aim for with their site; but I dont think a site should be too easy to engage with; it should confuse you, it should bother you and it should make itself heard if it wants too; a website has the right to be loud and proud  :ha:
