Its such a changing language, In the 2006 era, noseless faces were very hip, you were crusty and old if you put a nose like :-) in your text. Then there were forum ones that sometimes kinda worked, and other times were a bit weird, but it was different everywhere. I'm not sure how I feel about xD, it reminds me too much of being 15 xD

My first experience of modern emoji was using an app that only let you type in emoji (but you had to manually install an emoji keyboard because they didn't exist yet) and there was the whole conflict with emoji looking quite different on iPhone and Android and not working on desktop.

For a while I kinda avoided them, because I figured that everything you wanna say should be sayable with text BUT now I think that's just not true, the way we communicate has changed so much in the last 50 years, and emoji are just one more tool that fill a gap that was missing from short form text.

Also we've come full circle, nose faces are very hip and cool now, although I'm particularly fond of pointy noses :^]

or even better kaomojis like (⌒▽⌒)☆
How do people think these up! Its such an abstractly complicated thing to try and create a face out of text like this :ozwomp:

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Re: What web host do you use?
« on: January 27, 2022, 02:53:59 pm »
I keep 2 DigitalOcean nodes in the background (Iv used this since 2014 and find them very good), one just runs MySQL for this forum and Daniel's Net and some other small apps. The other runs the web services for Daniel's Net, this forum, services like my metrics and newsletter. Iv also been playing around with Gemini on there.

Then I have a Raspberry Pi at home that runs indexing services for Daniels Net (Its not web facing it just connects to the database node, so does not need a public ip). (This tends to be a memory hog so it would slow down the forum and other stuff if it were on the same node)

And FINALLY, my main site, gifypet, momg and my "professional" site are all on Neocities. Neocities is a weird one becouse I could save $60 a year and move all those sites onto the same node as this forum. I like being part of the nc community though and I trust it more to keep the sites online and archived in the future, so I stick with it for now (but they better stop moving my site down the sites list!) :cheesy:

In the past I tried a lot of more regular web hosts like GoDaddy that provided cPanel and stuff, but I never really found they lasted for me, but that could have been down to the kind of sites I was making then :defrag: Also used to use enjin for a while, and kinda hated it and kinda liked it?!

☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / You've Got Mail!
« on: January 23, 2022, 07:56:17 pm »
So I'm not sure if you know, but in the Thunderbird mail client you can set a custom audio file to play when you get an email. I have mine set to play the classic AOL "You've Got Mail". THE ONLY ISSUE is that my audio clip is really compressed and REALLY LOUD! So instead of being a quaint nostalgic thing its more like a constant existential fear. I might be listening to music or watching a movie while connected to big speakers and all is fine in the world and then the You've Got Mail voice of doom will arrive to split ear drums, shatter windows and wake up dogs within a 20km radius.

Anyway, I hope you all appreciate and fear the You've Got Mail voice as I do.

This is why we have Wayback Machine and https://archive.ph/ !

Archives are great, BUT I think there is a different feeling between a dead archive and a site that still "living" on its own server with its own address. There is always the chance it might get updated again, its still where it was always supposed to be and its not fully a memory yet.

I can respect a site with a landing page, and I like their use of different doors to indicate different parts of the site. Its a good way to cope with a large site yet still makes it feel connected, I may steal that :innocent:

I appreciate a company that not only gives their full public address, NOT ONLY gives easy to find contact numbers, BUT even provides a specal number you can call and professional game counselors will help you when your stuck on a game :loved: https://web.archive.org/web/19961222145937/http://www.nintendo.com/hq/index.html

This is a wonderful find thank you!

« on: January 22, 2022, 11:00:51 pm »
This is a short project Iv been working on this week, its basically a screenshot of the first page of 4 thousand sites selected from Daniel's Net. I setup a script capturing them which took about 2 days to finish! I'll attach the script below for anyone interested in copying it.

Here is the video please enjoy! Or you can open it here in a new tab.

This is cool! It seemed to crash a few times when I used it, one of the errors seemed to call me a "butthole"

Can it do animated gifs? If so you could pull in images from MoMG!
