Welcome! :ozwomp: I enjoyed quickly looking around your site, it’s different, like a sort of arty zine, and the site collection page is a good idea too, Iv been considering doing something similar.

Out of curiosity how do you find outdoorsy life and web-geekery mix? And with that in mind, what is your favorite ancient civilization and star trek series?

Never heard of trackback or Technorati either, I remember in school (in like 200:cool: we had computer books that were from the late 80s and we had an entire week dedicated to how to make folders (did you know you can make folders IN folders AND rename them?!!) but the teacher was a little old lady so it was nice to humor her.

I think as this is in your course book the only correct way to proceed is to assume that this information is 100% accurate and correct for the remainder of your studies

Also I'm sure I took a picture of something slimier a few years ago (a page about web terminology), Ill have a look!

Greetings, if you're reading this you might be new here! This is a board for introducing yourself and saying hello, or if you've been away for a while and want to reintroduce yourself that's cool too!
Just create a new topic, it can follow any format but some recommendations are:

  • Tell us about yourself?
  • What are you into?
  • Do you have a site or a blog?
  • What do you love most about making things on the web? (or off the web!)

Looking forward to meeting you :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :omg:k:

What a pretty, vintage site! Very nostalgic

I feel that way about http://diabellalovescats.com/ .. it's been up since before I was born and the lady sure put a lot into making it. She last updated it last year; the internet would truly be lesser without it.

Omg this cat site, I might have to include it in my next newsletter :omg:

I feel this way about http://www.frogsonice.com/froggy/ its not been updated since 2007 although they still seem to renew the domain name every year.

So on the subject of using forums as development blogs. When I setup this forum I did have that in mind as something it would be good for; HOWEVER, Iv found it really does not work very well. The format does not feel very natural because your posts get lost between peoples feedback; or if your just editing the main post, there is no notification system to let people know you've made new edits. Forums are great as a discussion platform but they don't make a great blogging platform. I think a forum post works best when you make it about a particular aspect of your project that you want to get some feedback on.

I had a few blog type things over the years, I used Tumblr for a bit, I had a Blogger site back in the day. I have the lil blog on my main site now. The issue with pure HTML blogging is that its major friction. First you have to write the blog post in word, then make a html page, then format it, copying over all the paragraphs into p tags and b tags and uploading images etc etc. I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but Iv not found them yet! On top of that pure HTML blogs miss out on easy features like tagging which I think is actually a very important part of a blog, particularly if it covers many topics.

It's kind of like having an online studio -- other people can visit it, including myself, rather than just having some sort of sad, uninspiring document collecting dust in my computer.
This gives me an idea; I don't have many documents on my computer, but I do write a lot of ideas on paper. Perhaps just scanning those documents and posting them would be a valid form of blogging for me! (If people can get past the lack of spellcheck on paper :grin:smile:

I think the key things might be finding a platform you're happy with that really is low friction to make posts is the first step, then just forcing yourself to make lots of posts and not worry about them is the next. Letting go of worry and preconceptions is how I started to enjoy web design, so Id say the same is true of writing blogs.

Blogging is HARD! I like the idea of blogging, but the reality does not work out for me

I tend to try and write a blog entry when I have some big idea that I want to get across to people. The issue with that is I cant write about it until I feel its fully formed in my mind (that can take months). Then the problem is that once you start to write you realize the idea is a lot less formed than you thought!

I love the idea of being able to do quick blog posts about what I'm thinking on a particular day, but that's just not how I express myself, I like to stay quiet until I understand myself.
THEN after all that, in 6 months I read what I wrote and I hate it because Iv moved on and don't think that way anymore! :ozwomp: I don't like the feeling on exposure, even though I do like sharing my ideas. If I could find a way to change Id love to know how!

Do you blog night? If so where and how do you do it?

I can't find where I read this (it was somewhere on Gemini), but I read that the term "users" to describe someone who is a regular at a website was one coined by Silicon Valley as an analogy to compare to those addicted to drugs.

This probably sounds like a tinfoil hat conspiracy theory, but come to think of it, I don't think I've heard the term "users" in the context of the internet before Facebook came along. Like if you were in a forum, a BBS or an IRC chat, you weren't a user, you were a member, right?

Not much else to say, just figured that was interesting.

I was curious so I did some digging while my lunch is cooking! The term user seems to be quite old.

I found one paper from 1968 that uses it http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/mit/lcs/tr/MIT-LCS-TR-056.pdf
and another from 1956 that uses it https://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/www.bitsavers.org/pdf/ibm/7030/1956_fallJCC.pdf
"to every user of an electronic computer"

But it is true that computing and drugs are almost the only fields that call the people who use them as users :omg:k: I think its more poetic coincidence though.

EDIT:
From what I can see the term "user" in tech comes from at least the 1920s. Its used a lot here in a law on radio transmission rights https://scholarship.law.marquette.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=&httpsredir=1&article=4367&context=mulr It might even pre-date the use of user in reference to drugs which is kinda interesting!

Oh no you'll start me on a rant! I think in many ways a lot of the things I miss are also things I dont miss. For example I miss old TVs but I also DO NOT miss old TVs :omg:k:

That said a few stand outs are:
  • Crappy cheap tech - mobile phones are SO MUCH nicer now!
  • Not being able to watch what I want - depending on broadcast TV
  • Clique culture and the 00s obsession with being cool allllll the time
  • Long shipping times and limited selection of goods in shops
  • The entire existence of chans and early meme culture (which mainly involved stick figure animations for some reason)
  • Flash
  • Being embarrassed by EVERYTHING
  • The price of DVDs on launch (They used to be $60 new)
  • Everything that happend from 2005 to 2015 :ziped:

In terms of actually being a child/teen, I don't miss not having the knowledge or skill to express myself and understand who I am, that has been a long painful process to figure out! (I guess that goes for everyone though)

What do you not miss ice?

EDIT: OH also not being able to read/spell (like at all), growing up with really bad dyslexia is troublesome :ohdear:

:defrag: :defrag: :defrag: Hi all, a quick guide here with a free script!

As some of you know Im a fan of frames sites, those are sites that use the frameset system for page layout. If you need help with frames have a look at my site and a look at this tutorial too https://www.tutorialspoint.com/html/html_frames.htm.

The big issue with frameset sites though is that they don't save browser history properly, you cant share links to sub pages and the back button does not work.. crappy stuff! BUT I have a fix for all of that and I'll share it here! Example: Instead of just going to https://melonking.net/melon, you can now visit https://melonking.net/melon?z=/links to jump to a particular framed page.

PREMADE TEMPLATE:
I have attached "frames-template.html" this is a template frame site layout you can download and use! It also explains a little about how to modify the frames! (If you download the template you don't need to install the script yourself, its pre-setup :grin:smile:

How to Install (Works for iFrame sites tooo!!)
Add this code to the <head> of your frameset page or main page containing your iFrame (Typically your index.html)
Code
<script src="https://melonking.net/scripts/frame-link.js"></script>

Then add id="mainframe" to your main <iFrame> or Frameset <frame> tag.

Done!

Optional Steps
Optional: Create a second <script></script> section AFTER you link the frame-link.js
Optional: add updateTitle = false; if you want to disable title updating. (Default is true)
Optional: add titlePrefix = "My Site "; if you want to add a prefix to your titles. (Default is none)
Optional: add pageParam = "z"; if you want to change the url path of your pages. (Default is z)
Optional: if you use a Hit Counter add hitCounterFunction = function () { XXX MY HIT COUNTER CODE }, this function will automatically be called each time someone click a page, so you can log per page hits within your frame.

The GoatCounter documentation is currently offline, so I cant provide a pre-made hitCounterFunction for you, but I'll add one in the future if the documentation ever comes back!

So my story of this game is that Iv never played it. BUT I did to a sort of job interview/advice thing where I showed them my site and they basicly said "No one will ever hire you, but I think you'd enjoy Hypnospace Outlaw" :omg:k:

Id love to know how people feel it related to their web design. Does it inspire you? Do you feel its a parody of neocities? Do you think its a totally unrelated subject, or just loosely aesthetically similar?
