✁ ∙ Web Crafting / What does a successful project mean to you?
« on: December 05, 2021, 06:19:47 pm »
So a back story; In 2019 my site was at position #3 on the Neocities websites list, and I was scared to update it, because I didn't want to do anything to detract from it. These days its slipped down that board a bit and I finally feel like an can reclaim it and start having fun again.

Looking back; for me having a "successful" site was a mixed experience, I loved the feedback and sense of value it gave me (and still gives me), but popularity also stole my site from me.

In a world where on the web you can have an almost unlimited amount of attention, is attention really something to shoot for? If its not a good metric for the success of something, what should be?

How do you think about the success or lack of success of your projects? Do you find it enough to make things for yourself, or do you balance that out with what the wider world wants? What kind of feedback do you hope for from your work and why?

This looks interesting :ozwomp: I look forward to seeing more about it; I have to admit, I kiiinddaa get the idea, but it'll be clearer when you've got some world pictures.

From the looks of things you're already quite competent with Blender, if you're that competent with Unity you'll have no trouble at all! The character animations look very natural :O

I think if you keep that poly level and simple textures throughout the game you should have no issue making it a web game, although that also depends on how much stuff ends up in your world!

I have a few questions on my mind (Particularly because you compare it to Tomodachi Life), but I think Id like to see a bit more before asking a bunch that might not fit what your thinking. So I'll hold them for now! One thing that would be cool to see is a world map, and maybe a list of some of the interactions you'd like the player and villagers to have.

Otherwise it seems like a solid plan, thank you for posting about it, it'll be fun to see how it evolves

Oh you are playing a VERY dangerous game lol, this is possibly one of my most favorite aspects of forums... threw a few simple things together based on the current forum theme, using some of my favorite banner formats. They're not exactly badges, but they're definitely the right size for if folks want to rep the forum on their personal collections.

Added to the main post (also re-hosted on the forum server as a backup)! I really like all of these particularly the one with the stars!

  • I can't change my birthday on my profile. After I saved, my birthday was still listed as 0001/01/01. I tried again and it still didn't work.
  • I was setting up my profile, everything saved properly, except for my birthday!
  • I expected my birthday to save and be displayed properly.
  • I'm using Firefox on Mac.

Thank you for this BUG REPORT! I was able to fix the issue, you should now be able to set your birthday

I have never actually seen one of those Amtrak mega tickets before (probably for good reason considering how expensive they are o_o), or knew of their existence. It's also..really big, did you really have to carry that around to show the ticket inspectors, or was there a smaller/mobile version you could use? I've always wanted to take the Amtrak's Southwest Chief route; buying the regular ticket fare would probably be plenty enough, but taking a month or three to explore the US via train with one of these mega tickets would be an incredible experience.

That's your ticket, you carry it around and you don't lose it! Living on Amtrak is a different version of life, tickets are bigger and life slows down. The world becomes a passing photograph of deserts and fields and roads; sometimes the train just stops for 6 hours because theirs a line outage and its fine, time doesn't matter any more. You're caught in a 70s movie, with some old hippie or a whole carriage of traveling Amish. Amtrak is a faded glimmer of civilization, where the dream that America promised the world it was, is still almost real. It wont last, I HIGHLY encourage you to take that trip.

A picture I took out the window towards the end of my time there:

Ok this took some digging, but here's what I found! (One was hiding in a U2 cassette case)

Top to bottom, left to right:
  • Amtrak - 3 Month US Rail Pass (It cost $900, EXPENSIVE TICKET)
  • Washington DC Metro
  • Suica - Japan wide public transport
  • Pasmo - Tokyo Metro and Claw machines for some reason
  • Leap - Ireland public transport
  • Paris Metro ticket
  • New York Metro card
  • Bonus: The last kids ticket I ever got on the local train where we lived
  • Bonus: My Beano Club Membership card!

Aha, another good question!

So I am going to take a hard line and say, regular GoogleAds type ads are absolutely not acceptable on a personal site, ads are about making money and a personal site should not be about making money.

Some people do enjoy putting pretend ads on their site, or ads for other personal sites. That's fine because its about community building rather than money making, its like an alternative version of site badges.

For service sites (like this forum or GifyPet), I'm still going to take a pretty hard line and say no, again because I think it muddies the goal. These sites are and should be about creativity and community, not about making money. I feel it creates an imbalance: For example, our sites rely on community connections, you link to me and I link to someone else and that creates the web trail. What if I start earning a bunch of cash from my site? Should you still link to me, sending me free traffic even though you're not getting any benefit from that? Maybe you'll start to try and monetize your site too, and then we are all in a rat race of site monetization. That path is how we got to the modern web; isolated sites all trying to get your cash, crammed with SEO because only search engines will link to them.

That doesn't mean money on sites is bad; you can accept donations (as I do) or sell your art. That's fine because that's about supporting your work; the difference with ads is that ads are about making money for moneys sake, and also making money off traffic rather than your work. If you are going to advertise your own work for sale though, I think it should be done modestly and unobtrusively; if people want to support you, they will, you don't need to cram it in their face.

I'm sure there is a balance, one or two ads wont end the world. Generally speaking though I don't interact with sites that I perceive as using the old web as a money making platform rather than really being a part of its ideals.

Pulling myself out of a slump. So far things are slowly looking up and I'm feeling much better now.
was having some art block, but am finally feeling inspired >:-)

November is always a horrible month, Iv never had a November where I didn't end up blocked or in a slump. I think its something to do with the changing weather, darker days and the ending of the year. Now December is here and Christmas and the New Year is on its way

Oh, you asked for it! (Colour coded by type)

  • What will I do with my life next year, I moved home during the pandemic, but I cant stay here! How will I ever get my own life again and my own place when I don't want a job and just want to keep making websites and games
  • How will I get over the love of my life drifting away from me :notgood:
  • Whats going to happen with this new Covid variant, will family Christmas happen this year? I'm supposed to travel to London in a few weeks, should I still do that?
  • How can I keep growing this forum! Id really like to see it become a great community! But I also wanna keep it safe from the big bad web.
  • Getting Ozwomp's Voyage finished and how I'm gonna release it, its a small game but perhaps a big milestone!
  • Website updates, Im always thinking of those, what do I wanna do with MK.Net (I wanna make the landing page more useful)
  • Where should I stick my Spacehey stickers!!?!?!
  • Where is my Playdate! Panic said shipping by end of 2021, now they say early 2022, will I EVER get it?!

Aagghhh, i know that's not one thing its like 50 when you start to break it down, but having so many things on my mind is the biggest thing on my mind at the moment!
