The idea of it being a semi-mmo without interaction has a lot of charm of its own, perhaps we'll all run into each other without knowing it LOL (informal launch party?). I am assuming other players will also be Ozwomp? Ozwomp recolored? Either way, the mental visual of Ozwomps aplenty is great, but if you already had plans for something different I'd be curious to hear.

I'm also incredibly curious, as someone who is used to traditionally downloadable games/is very new to web worlds, do you feel that the losses between the two platforms is manageable for what you're hoping to achieve? Based on your post so far it sounds like most of the losses are visual, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on high level limitations or capabilities between the two.

Yes everyone will be an Onzwomp! I think making them different colours is a really good idea! My idea for the mmo aspect is actually part of a larger plan, I want to release a standard package on multiple game engines that allows you to drag and drop the same simple multiplayer functionality into games. Its part of my larger micro-metaverse project!

Yeah, pretty much any game can be released as a web game, the loss is in graphics ability. A web game will not be able to have fancy lighting and fog, and it will not be able to have as many objects on screen, or complex animations. There's always a cat and mouse chase of expectation v quality in games. A web game today that we consider quite limited would have been an impressive game a few years ago!

I am looking for testers for the early dev build!
Attached are the questions Id like answered by testers, if you are interested DM me to get a download link! (Let me know what OS you use!)

So the thing is, I know this is a joke; but the design is really nice, AND I visit cinni.net all the time to use the web graphics section for posting on this forum or in emails. It would actually be really cool to have a whole site dedicated to providing graphics like that :dunno: Mayebe even with a system for people to submit their own graphics too. AND it would be cool if you could tip the graphic creator/finder for making cool gifs. If you're ever tempted to make something like that Id be happy to help on backend code!

Thank you for this VAST reply! And don't worry about delays answering, the joy of a forum is that time is not important, posts can be days or weeks or YEARS apart and its all fine.

Also thank you for the video, now I just need to learn Blender to make more sense of it  It answers my biggest overall question which was, is it raw poly editing, and it is!

I don't have many more big questions, it sounds like a really good project and everything you say makes sense. I think people will prob respond to it really well, although you've got a lot of work to add in all the stuff you talk about. Not doing multiplayer is a good plan, I think you've got enough here, although a multi town would be cool too!

I suppose the last and worst question is! How long to you think its going to take?
Annnd assuming you're answer is multiple months to years, I know the kind of issues I run into with big projects, and I assume others here run into these issues too. How do you handle doing large/long projects without losing interest? Do you get overwhelmed by ideas/tasks that need doing? And if so how do you manage that?

Updates of the day, started work on audio and game feel. and OH BOY, its pretty without sound, but when you get the sound just right

For reference, the entire soundtrack will be made up of songs by Siddhartha Corsus https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Siddhartha a lot of them are a bit new agey, but when you pick out the ones that work, it really sparkles!

Hoping to be done in the next week, although I might be away for a few days which would delay things.

I really like the colour set you used on this, and it also loads super fast. As soon as I saw this was like "OH I wanna do my landing page in X3D now" but looking at your updates, it looks like Neocities cant screenshot X3D worlds (anymore)? which kinda spoils that plan :notgood:

The neocities point is weird because mine used to screenshot:

I'll update the tutorial to clarify those appearance editing and tag points, lemmy know if you run into any other issues!

Icona City - Minidiscs travel the roads, networking from node to node.

EDIT: Also some bad news, I have had to cut the MOMG world from the game, it simply does not work well in unity, I just cant make it stable enough. HOWEVER I will try and redo it as a separate minigame in MelonEngine, I think that could handle it.

EDIT2: Work today - Added working intro UI, also look at this lovely image!

There is a forum dedicated to making MUDs, its not super active but its got a lot of useful info: http://topmudsites.com/forums/

From what I gather, you could program a simple one yourself pretty quickly, but giving it all the complex features some MUDs have could get really difficult.

Luckily there are a bunch of pre made MUD servers you can use, you just host them online and start.. er MUDding? Its a bit like setting up a minecraft server I guess. https://www.livinginternet.com/d/da_own.htm

This host claims to be for MUD operators: https://www.genesismuds.com/ they have an awesomely outdated site!

Personally I'm always super tempted to do a MUD, but I just have waayyy too many projects! The fact you can create a huge world with just a few lines of text is very tempting though.

=== Moved to website discussion (I think it fits here more? Maybe not we can move it back later :grin:smile: ===

Firstly I just wanted to say thanks for this great topic, you've done a few good posts on the forum, and its really appreciated. Getting the momentum going on a new forum is never easy, so thank you!

So this is a good topic because I think its something every new site faces at some point. I used to be obsessed with super organized sites and keeping everything in a particular structure, but not so much these days

I think there are a few starter questions: How big is your site? (under 10, or dozens, or hundreds of pages?) How are pages connected? (Do you use frames, or JavaScript loading, or is each page stand alone?) Does your site have a universal style/layout or is it many different layouts?

I think once you answer all those questions you're in a better place to make a choice.

For me the answers are: dozens, pages are connected with frames, and I have no consistent layout or style. SO that leads me to my site organization.

I have a base directory that contains major html files, like my index, home, about page etc. It also has what I call universal folders for images, audio, styles etc. Universal assets are things that I might use anywhere on my site, on any page. So if I put an image in the universal images folder, I know I can always do "/images/myimage.gif".

After that I have sub folders that act as mini sites, for example /shop/, those folders have their own index.html and their own pages and some will have their own images and audio folders, the difference is that in theory, an image in the shop folder should only ever be used on pages in the shop folder, there should never be cross connection between folders and if there is I move the file to the universal folder.

Visual example:

Pros & Cons:
Iv used this system for about 5 years and it works pretty well for my kind of site, but it would not work for a site with a consistent layout.
Sometimes files do get cross connected and neocities does not make it easy to move files.
It gets confusing having multiple files called index.html

Tips:
All pages do refrence a universal "common.css", this means in the event I do need to restyle something across the entire site (like the font) or share css animations, its easy to do that.

Id love to hear back form people who have differently structured sites though, particularly ones like cinni.net that must fit into a very ridged structure, or ones that are loading in content over javascript (not something I recommend but i understand why people do it!). Are you planning to do a numbered blog type site? That might call for more numbered and file naming, but again it depends on the kind of content your thinking about.
