Another podcast that might interest people - Digital Folklore Podcast - https://digitalfolklore.fm/episodes/s1e1 - its about digital folklore aka the myths of the internet - the music is a bit dramatic and they have some ads, but when you get past that they cover some interesting topics!

Oh no you found my unlisted design document

Lets see there are some cool thoughts here! Are we should he's the owner (are we sure hes's a he??) - maybe its more seamless, maybe he is the universe and the universe is him (hence why he's its shape?).

I like this rocket idea! Maybe other stuff could be modified it is goes through him to! What would happen if he flew into a cloud of star cookie crumbs??

Interesting; so Orbulons are like elements? Do they construct into anything like atoms? Is there any sort of chemistry that can happen with them?

Oh he's a protector now? Hmmm; I think I like him being more of an impartial bystander who makes no judgment on the actions of others; but maybe doing that is a form of protection somehow - crocodiles are very ancient and both dignified and grumpy - those are definitely good protector traits!

I totally forgot about Great Tipi! I like this utilising of elements going on - I guess that answers my earlier question! Somehow this makes me think of the large hadron collider - maybe discovery is the path to healing!

Weirdly I never considered the minidsics having anything to with music, but it makes a LOT of sense! Do these songs have any special meaning that adds to his voyage? Could the songs actually be kinda random.. maybe there is no one song, but a stream of verses made up of all songs that harmonise.

Lots of good thoughts here!

:4u: GIFTS :4u:

Hello!

Today we are testing a new GIFTS system (aka Awards but nicer) - this lets you upload gifts to peoples profiles! Gifts can be anything you like as long as they are 32x32 images (or smaller)!
To give gifts you must be a Full Member (100+ posts) - Then click on someones profile and pick (View Gifts) - you can then upload a gift!!

Please do not abuse the gift system! If you do the gifts may go away :ohdear: Also if you find bugs lemmy know - and let me know how you find the system in general! Gifs will appear on on your forum posts too! If you don't want a gift (or just want space for others) you can delete it!

Please remember that gifts are just for fun!!

But how should I use gifts?? - Thats up to you, but I think it would be fun to give them as rewards for posting on particular topics, maybe you make a topic about bees, so you can give everyone who replies a bee gift!

I love that idea! He totally seems like a hungry fellow who would appreciate some snacks! - In most of the games there is something called "Paste" what everyones seems to want, maybe he wants that too, or maybe he likes eating star cookies! I bet he goes even faster after a snack.

(For new members who are confused - My avatar is a character called Ozwomp from a small game series I make!)

Someone mentioned Ozwomp lore recently and I wrote down some bit based on the games.. but honestly its so vauge! I though it would be more fun to hear what you guys think the lore is/should be? It doesn't matter if you know any of my lore, or have played any of the games - whats your first impression when you think of Ozwomp!!
Id love to know! And maybe it can be the background for the next game if there are some good stories! :ozwomp:

EDIT: Also be warned - everyone who posts ideas will receive an EXTREMELY badly drawn ozwomp gift

There are some fragments of lore

Ozwomp lives in a region called the Ozway - which is primarily an electrical dimension - time is largely non existent there and everyone lives forever - there are other Ozwomp style creatures (Mainly The Wizard who looks like Ozwomp but has a purple hat, and Galactic Central, a giant who looks like Ozwomp but is covered in stars and is MUCH older - Ozwomp is smaller than most, and may be the youngest citizen of the Ozway) - there are a number of known citizens of the Ozway (which includes regions like Yonkrip). There seems to be a fad for a unknown element called "paste" which is apparently very useful, although its never actually been observed. Orbulons are also aparently in high demand although no one knows what they actually are!

Yonkrip Gate seems to be some sort of boundary point but its unclear what (if anything is beyond it!) - Nombegs; they also seem to have their own religion which focuses on the City of Gold. Lord Yolto seems to be a kind of mayor and may live in a big house somewhere (he has a sword stuck in his back for no explained reason) - there is also the Ognobula who is a kind of "Guru" - he may be responsible for the Paste fad - or is just cashing in on it.

Also see the Yonkrip Tribune - a local newspaper: https://melonking.net/files/yonkrip-tribune.pdf

EDITED: I removed the characters because I don't like the old descriptions of them! This story has evolved a lot since it was first drafted and Id like to update it before making it too set in stone

Hmmmmmmmmmmm I think you might need something for scale because I cant really tell how small this Ozwomp is.. but they do look quite small :omg:

Thank you for making this, I do enjoy seeing Ozwomp art :ozwomp:

Mine has always been this page - https://melonking.net/melon?z=/hidden/2k - its one of the first javascript projects I ever did, and was added to the site very early on - its basically a list of every year for 1000 years, and each year it will reload and shade out the next year. There's something very haunting about that to me.. I remember the year 2000.. but I will be dust by the time that page is fully shaded out. It makes time look like a footnote, and puts things in perspective - those years that auto-increment in copyright footers are our whole lives, but they are also just lil numbers :dl:

Almost a year ago! A few things have changed but most is the same - Ill post an update in April!

If you had to pick one digital and one physical thing off this list to recommend what would they be?
Easy :ozwomp: I love that Macbook Pro! After 15 years of disappointing laptops from Apple they finally made one that just feels great! It reminds my of how the old Titanium G4 macs felt in 2001! And for software, Nova, 100% - its a joy to use every time I open it - without Nova I don't think half of the site development Iv done over the last 2 years would have happened!

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: Portable CD Players in 2023?
« on: February 10, 2023, 01:40:08 am »
Sooo a CD is basically a data storage medium - it stores digital audio data (of a particular quality that was defined in the 1980s); e.g. its a bunch of 1s and 0s pressed into a plastic disc - a laser reads those 1s and 0s, and converts them into electrical 1s and 0s, and then something called a DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) turns the 1s and 0s into analogue electrical audio - then your headphones turn that into something your ears can hear!

Assuming the data on the CD is a great quality - after that the DAC is the important bit - you can have a basic lil DAC that is just a chip and goes inside your phone - or you can have a HUGE expensive one that sits under your stereo! The job of the DAC is to figure out how to take digital data and turn it into something that sounds good - and it has to do it reaallly fast and really accurately!
DACs have improved a LOT in the last 20 years, old Sony ones were definitely the best you could get in a portable player 20 years ago, but you could also get much better ones in a big stereo.. today things are very different! You can get tiny DACs now that totally smoke even the best ones from the 2000s!

After all that your headphones are really important! So its a 3 step process - Good Audio Recording > Good DAC > Good Headphones!

Its a rabbit hole I went down about 5 years ago.. these days I don't worry about it so much, but I do still appreciate having some decent equipment!

Though it seems to be mostly out of stock and far more expensive than a Discman, but of course offers more capabilities. Also Sony claims it to be higher than CD quality?!

CD quality is totally fine and very good sounding - but its only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to hi-res audio! I have "Pure Heroine" by Lorde in that 24 bit 96khz quality.. and... it is super deep and nice to listen to! I don't think its a big enough difference to stress about, but is there, and maybe worth it on some albums - 99% of the time though CD quality is perfect

(Also its important to note - those old DiscMen are prob not playing back full CD quality - even in the 2000s you needed a fancy stereo to get the most out of a CD)

Annndd agreed - the Sony Walkman line is a mess at the moment - Id love to get one.. but they just haven't made the perfect one for me yet. You can also look up a company called Fiio, they make good players too (Just without the Walkman branding :sad:smile:
