Like, how else would you get to legally own and listen to uncompressed music nowadays?

While I totally support carrying around a DiscMan and a pile of CDs - IF you need a practical alternate - ripping the CDs as lossless FLACs and playing them back on a modern Hi-Res portable player like a Sony A40 or A55.. or A306?? (there are a bunch) Walkman is a VERY good and convent option - plus you still get to collect CDs! :ha:

You should be able to see who you've invited under Modify Profile/Buddies/Ignore List - see if they are there!

Is it possible you somehow disabled popup dialogues for the forum? Sometimes thats a browser option!

Failing that let me know who it is (post here or PM me) and I can check the database to see if anything is weird! :4u:

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: Things from the modern web you actually like
« on: February 09, 2023, 11:32:44 pm »
I always like to stress that there really is no divide between the retro web and the modern web for me! This forum is part of the modern web; both conceptually and literally. Conceptually because without the modern web there would be no web revival; sites like mine exist as a reaction to the sterile design promoted by sites like Google; but if that design didn't exist, none of my sites would either! Literally because this forum is made possible by the low cost-high speed web infrastructure that was created to support the rapid development of commercial online products! :grin:

Ooph that was a mouthful - but my point is that retro homepages are just as much a part of the modern web as Amazon is; so would it be cheeky to say my sites are my favourite part of the modern web? :cheesy:

On that note; I agree the global online shopping system - Particularly Amazon (all its faults aside) is a miracle of human engineering and logistics! Video streaming is also incredible (do you have any idea how much data bandwidth and processing that needs to function!) - in my short life span we have gone from 3 local TV channels and about 4 radio stations - to every movie and tv show ever created, and every song and audio clip, all available to me INSTANTLY!

3D tools like Three.js and WebGL - the interoperability of services using (mostly) reliable APIs that allows me to take a video from one site and embed it in another with almost no effort?! - THE LIST GOES ON!

I agree with /home/ though - in all of that rapid development, a certain whimsical honesty has been lost, and thats what what the web revival is really about trying to find - I think retro web fans are actually the biggest fans of the modern web because they are the people who care enough to do things unusually, because they believe that no matter how amazing the web is; it can always be better. :ozwomp:

I dunno if you changed something, but these are both working fine for me :happy: - Make sure you have auto-play media enabled in your browser for your website.

Welcome to the human condition :tongue:

You walk down the street every day and anyone could do anything! When I buy milk in a shop, I expect the shop keeper to put my cash in the register; but they could just as easily eat my cash and sing the star spangled banner!

Thankfully you can usually count on social norms, shared goals and a general desire to get along :grin: , and as Commodorn said; that trust is necessary for any community to exist.

« on: February 09, 2023, 02:19:09 am »
As someone who just got a GC emulator, any tips for AC?
I totally recommend the Doubutsu no Mori e+ version with an english language patch - its the og game cube game but with a bunch of extra features! Also the HD texture mod is worth it - although you might like the fuzzy look without it too!

English lang patch: https://mega.nz/file/3i5m1Q5C#K1tVatIBhCtQ2d01npRx2-GuBconjGwJ72MjIWnsPuA

Important tips!
  • You cannot change your characters town or appearance once the game starts - your appearance is based on random questions the cat on the train asks you - SO if you don't like your look.. restart the game :omg:k:
  • There are cheat codes for this game that give you money and.. honestly you prob need them later on.
  • Sometimes when you talk to people they will just steal your stuff - so dont talk to someone if you have something important with you.
  • Make sure to get your KK song every Saturday night!
  • Talk to Sable every day in the tailor shop!
  • Check the dump every day - it has cool stuff in it!
  • Your shop can only get some upgrades if you have another player visit your town and buy something.

I wish you luck - say Hi to nook for me!! :evil:

☔︎ ∙ Help & Tutorials / Re: HELP: html/css box float
« on: February 09, 2023, 01:00:47 am »
Errr its a little hard to tell what exactly your code is trying to do.. but it sounds like this would be (mostly) a solution for you.

Code
<html>
 <head>
  <style>
   .center {
    text-align: center;
   }

   .boxes {
    display: flex;
   }

   .boxes div {
    width: 100px;
    height: 100px;
    background-color: red;
    margin: 10px;
   }
  </style>
 </head>
 <body>
  <div class="container">
   <p class="center">top bar</p>
   <div class="boxes">
    <div>Box A</div>
    <div>Box B</div>
   </div>
   <img src="rammy1.jpeg"><img src="spin.gif">
  </div>
 </body>
</html>

So here I have created 2 boxes that are side by side and are totally equal - you have your centred text above them, and your two images below them.

I converted your <center> tags into CSS becouse thats just a good idea! BUT the important thing you need to look at is the display: flex; thats the thing making your box goes next to each other - then the .boxes div is styling the boxes and giving them a set size!

Not sure if thats exactly what your asking for - but its gotta be a good start :grin:

Forum Profiles! :omg:

This is just a quick newsflash to let everyone know that Profiles have been upgraded on the forum - You'll find they look diffrent and have some new sections!! You can now add your own About Me and Interests sections; along with custom CSS on your profile (but its kinda buggy atm)

To get started with your new profile just click the "Ultimate Profile" tab under your regular "Forum profile" tab!

Also the Buddies System has been redone! I had to reset buddies while doing this so if you've lost a buddy dont worry! They dont hate you, you just need to re-add them :ozwomp:

ALSO in unrelated news - Vimeo embeds are working again!

⛺︎ ∙ Cinema / Re: Werner Herzog appreciation thread!
« on: February 08, 2023, 05:03:46 pm »
I actually watched the making of Fitzcaraldo last night! They did totally do it for real! - but it wasn't for the sake of realism - he did it because it was a deliberate defiance of over use of special effects in films; he wanted to create something that was genuine and respectful to the viewers sense of reality; thats something I can totally relate to.

The making of that film looks like a genuine nightmare - but the line between dreams and nightmares, between torment and ecstasy or madness and sanity, is exactly what the film is about; so it works! (Although apparently he was ostracised from the film community for about 10 years after that)

They did clear some rain forrest (but only a tiny bit); and they did use native tribes as both extras and labourers - however they paid them well, they kept them as safe as they could, and more importantly they helped them get the deed of ownership to their land; which recently prevented an oil company form destroying the whole area - so maybe it wasn't the most perfect working conditions at the time; but in the long run I think its had a positive effect on the area. (I wouldn't be making appreciating Hertzog threads if I though otherwise!)

I think maybe the takeaway I get from his work is that; dreams are never safe - but without dreams and creative vision.. whats the use of being human? Life is damn hard, but we dream the world into being a better place, and as messy as it might get, sometimes we make those dreams come true! I find that immensely reassuring and encouraging :ozwomp:

✎ ∙ Making Games & Art Discussion / Re: Art troubles
« on: February 08, 2023, 04:20:18 pm »
Ooph! Im just gonna chime in to say that art is really hard! No matter how casually you do it or how fun you want it to be; all art is a struggle; but thats a good thing, it means that your really trying and your really invested! If you can suffer, then you can make art, the rest is just technicality :4u:

Ok so some practical advice; first split things up - there's your creative vision - your technical skill - and your expectation based on the world around you. Those are all separate things and you have to deal with them separately!

Its also really important to remember that creation and criticism are TOTALLY separate mental processes - do no try to analyses or critique your work as you create it - create then analyse then create again later.

  • Your creative vision is within you and based on what you wanna express - it sounds like you might have this sorted for now, but your mixing it up with your technical skill. This is not about how your work looks, its about how it makes you feel - improve this by experiencing life!
  • Technical skill is easier - follow tutorials, study other artists, practise doing works that you are not emotionally invested in. You should not be thinking about emotion or creative vision when your working on technical stuff.
  • This ones harder and you'll have to resolve it for yourself! Avoiding social media is part of this step for you; its about figuring out how you want the world to see you and how you want to see yourself in relation to the world - so think about others to improve in this area.

Getting these three things in balance is really important - but it will never be perfect, some will always be stronger or weaker, and also you will have a natural leaning towards a particular one; be aware of that and put extra effort into the areas that you feel yourself avoiding!

Thats my random art advice for the afternoon! I might edit this later becouse Im in a rush now, but I hope it helps a little! :unite:

EDIT: This is a great book to read and Id recommend it to anyone making art! (if you search you can find PDFs online!)

It all seems to work great now! I love the pettles and sound on the about page :ozwomp: You have a very refined sensibility that really produces a unique yet familiar site - its great to see it appear from your original idea!

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: mechanical keyboards as a hobby?
« on: February 08, 2023, 02:38:11 am »
Oh this is a beautiful collection :ozwomp:

Iv been away from the keyboard scene for a while; Iv never even heard thonks before!! Creamy's sound like tap dancing :grin:

I don't take keyboarding nearly as seriously as you; but I do totally appreciate a nice keyboard and I think particularly for us people who work with computers so much its important to have a tactile experience you really love.

I guess Iv had a few mechanical keyboards over the years .. I had a bunch of Razor ones but I gave most of them away to friends for various reasons (I never liked them very much)

These days I have:
My Main Keyboard is a Vortex Race 3 with its stock keycaps and it has Cherry Clear switches - those were an ordeal to get - I had to sneak it in from the US because they don't sell them in Europe. I really like this layout, it reminds me of 90s mac laptops - and I love the feel of the keys and the cleanness of having no bezel - its just a silver shelf and then blackness and then the keys just float above it! Oh I do like this keyboard!

I also sometimes use my 1988 IBM Model-M - but its very big and clunky, you can see it here (apparently cherry clear switches were also invented in 1988.. I guess thats my year!). I also have an old Macintosh keyboard that uses alpis switches; its ok but nothing to write home about. I guess you could also count the Atari 800, but its keyboard is not usable on modern systems.. its.. very 70s and mechanical! ... not in a good way, but interesting to experience!

And Finally I have a separate Razer Huntsman Mini with its Red (optical linear) switches - I use that for gaming because Cherry Clears are way too clunky for even casual games.

I find clicky keys sound great on their own, but when I actually need to use a keyboard seriously I perfer something quieter. A heavy key switch with a bump suits me because I tend to whack keys! Annnnddd I like the vintage rounded keycap style too that you seem th have on yours; although I definitely want keys that have letters printed on them :tongue:

2. softie is totaly my favourite of yours! It reminds me of some sort of vintage toy that I cant quite name.. but it has things that get pushed.. hmmm
