I know exactly what you mean! Unity vibe is a very constant feeling and its almost impossible to get away from it - but its also almost impossible to nail down exactly what causes it! I actually have the same issues with Unreal Engine too; I can spot a UE game instantly after a few minutes of playing with it.

It comes from the way it renders colours, the way the physics interact, the slight blur Unity always seems to have, the speed it runs at - human perception is very good at spotting weirdnesses like that.

There are a few exceptions and mitigations you can do - Using the High Res Pipeline in unity changes the overall rendering feeling - using the DOTS project actually totally replaces the rending system too (it even removes the unity splash screen on early versions), so both change the vibe a bit.

City Skylines is a famous unity game that I didn't notice was Unity at first, but once you know its Unity you can reaaallyyyy see it!

There's nothing wrong with it.. Unity is great for short smaller projects (particularly if they are collaborations) and for prototyping ideas - but I don't think I would use Unity as a production engine if I was doing a big project - feeling unique is more important than having access to every feature!

Where do these names come from?

Iv never heard anyone name moons where I live; but I found that list of names on the NASA website - from what I can see these names seem to be a result of mixed European and Native American folk traditions - https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/2019/02/full-moon-names-explained

Hi lulu, welcome to the forum

Thank you for mentioning the closed page! It was actually a huge stress relief to set that up (but I was also worried people would be disappointed by it); after years of my site constantly exposing a certain version of my personality; having a day where its shut down and I get to disappear again is so refreshing, and I think it makes the days the site is open matter more.

Those are all cool interests - Whats an interesting philosophical thing you like? Whats your top 3 artworks? Annndd how do you feel about the Leprechaun movies?

Apparently Hans Zimmer (the composter who does like every big movie soundtrack - Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean etc) did the synth music on Video Killed the Radio Star; he even appears in the music video!

find an old computer that can take an old fashioned Voodoo GFX card...

It definitely cost me more than $50.. but years ago I built a whole voodoo 1 system from ebay parts! It was a very fun project - I still have it stored at my parents house - but Iv haven't had the space to set it up for years

Im still thinking about this.. I almost wonder if we should split up the catagories:

Instead of Community, Interests and Workshop

We could do like.. Community, Web, Art + Games, Social - so web would contain web discussion and web crafting - games would have games discussion and game making - and social could contains all the music chats and other interests. This would also allow people to focus on areas they like.

Maybe something like:

Community:
- Forum Discussion
- Greetings and Introductions
- Clubs and Events

World Wide Web:
- Life on the Web
- Website Crafting
- Showcase & Links

Art & Games:
- Art Discussions
- Video Games Discussion
- Share Your Art
- Making Games

Social Town:
- General Interests
- Music Room
- Anime & Movies & TV
- Writers Corner
- Jokes & Forum Games

Organising things is one thing - but organising things in a way that feel cohesive and make people feel at home in a social space is much harder - Im gonna put a lot more thought into this and listen for feedback!

Iv never been a major tab user - unless Im really in the middle of a project that has a bunch of info pages I need - usually it's just one or two! Also I close the browser a lot, so often there are no tabs at all!

Also I tend to have it set in a square aspect most of the time.

Extension icons - from left to right:
  • AdGuard - its a good adblocker - thats I have it installed system wide so thats just a control widget.
  • 1Password - I definitely recommend using a good password manager.
  • Save to My ToDo list - useful for forum topics I need to get back too!
  • Wayback Machine - lets me quickly check archives of a site and save archived pages!
  • Raindrop - My bookmarks!
  • The cog is site settings like auto play music and permissions etc
  • Tabs and search bar - I use compact mode tabs which merges both
  • Downloads button
  • E-mail this page button - I enjoy emailing pages to people!
  • New tab + tab windows

Hi Levya, welcome to the forum! :ha:

It must be nice to have a good balance of outdoor and indoor hobbies! There's a bio diversity college near me; I often see the students from it in the local pub; they are easy to spot because they wear multicoloured wool clothes and don't shave very much

Ugh, humans are always waging war over magic crystals! - If you were trapped in a JRPG, what would your role be?

I came across this video today (The video topics not so important-deals with mental health); Im sure its not a unique style and Im sure we will see lots of it in the future - but I think its incredibly engaging - its like the AI is visualising his words in the same way your mind would when someone is talking to you and you're imagining their words - somehow I find it very relaxing, like its speaking to my brain in a language I didn't know I was missing :omg:

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Re: Page Design
« on: January 27, 2023, 03:14:43 am »
It can vary wildly depending on pages - sometimes I know exactly what I want - sometimes I have a vague idea - sometimes I like something Iv seen somewhere and I try to replicate it - and sometimes its a slow evolution that takes MANY revisions before I hit a design that works.

For https://melonland.net - I kinda knew what I wanted in-terms of layout - I also knew I wanted a light colour design - I knew I wanted round buttons at the top - So the round buttons became bubbles and that very much informed the rest of the page getting a kinda water theme; I was also watching a documentary about Native American culture and apparently teal is associated with heaven to them, so I tried to make the page teal and that totally fitted my light colour theme and the water theme - I had not planed on teal water when I started, but when I added the Surf Club web-ring it all just tied together very nicely! I put the navbar on the right because everyone else puts theirs on the left and I like being a contrarian

For https://melonking.net - I was copying generic 90s layouts originally - the SpaceJam site had a big influence - the homepage had a window on it because.. well it needed something and I found a window gif  That informed the idea of adding more objects around the window to make it a room. Beyond that there are so many pages on this site has have totally unique inspirations. Almost nothing on this site is pre-planned, I just kinda jump in and see what happens.

Finally for https://loom.cafe - My professional site; this was inspired by a particular piece of 1970s land art called the Sun Tunnels, in Utah - I was thinking about the idea of portals into my life, emotion and nighttime - I also knew I wanted to make an iframe site; but I didn't really know what I could do that was new in the iframe space - putting the iframe behind an SVG so it was like a cutout seemed really unusual! I also wanted to get away from everything being rectangular like most websites.

I would add though - you said you don't like the word master because you see yourself more as a web maintainer - however someone who keeps bonsai trees becomes a Bonsai Master - the word master does not refer to domination of the media, it refers to your mastery of the skill. You might not feel you have that mastery yet (or maybe you do!) but claiming the title of webmaster is very much an act of rebellion, we say it because we are proclaiming that we have the right to develop the skill of web mastery (something that social media and generic site builders takes away!)

I had to look those up, but they are both classic tunes  There are some great clips of Earl Scruggs, like this one with Joan Baez - apparently he was really a charming fellow.

I just found this amazing clip on how to play banjo (Im sure you dont need it, by maybe someones does!) Plus its just amazing to share a moment with Pete :loved:

Alan Lomaxe's (Famous banjo music archivist and revivalist) daughter I BELIEVE lives not too far from my dad, she must be very old these days...

Labyrinth is totally worth a watch!

I found this Japan documentary made by one of my favourite documentary presenters - it seems to have been filmed in the year 2000!

I came here to say Web Keeper because it reminds me of lighthouse keeper, but Iv BEEN BEATEN!!

You can call yourself anything - you could be the site duck if you want! However since I guess thats not very descriptive, heres a few random ideas:

Hyper Warden, Web Slooth, Code Smith, Site Stitcher, Web God/Godess, Web Author, Oracle, Seamstress, Dreamweaver™, Web Abbot, Site Crafter, Web Monger, Digi Spider, Librarian, Page Worm, Web Pharaoh, Archivist, Site Dreamer, Link Officer, Page Sweeper

Maybe something there will spark an idea :ozwomp:
