I clicked and its playing Logans Run - this is very pleasing  What a great movie!

 :ozwomp:

Also if you're into archival and experimental film I totally recommend the streaming service https://www.criterionchannel.com its not free, but the material they have is SO GOOD! (You need to be in the US or Canada to sign up, but after that you can stream from anywhere - you can use a proxy to sign up)

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Does your "Time Number" still work?
« on: January 03, 2023, 12:39:26 am »
Many countries, states and phone operators have a special phone number you can call to get the correct time and date - In past days someone used to actually pick up and tell you the time!

I know my local time number shut down years ago, but if you're in the UK they still have a working one (dial 123 apparently)! Many parts of the US do too! (You may need to check an old phone book to find it)

Isn't it TIME you called your local time number? :ha: (What time is it help!!?!?)
Also are there any other interesting numbers you remember calling? - I used to call the directory service number when I was about 6 because it was free and I enjoyed talking to the operator

⛄︎ ∙ Forum Discussion / Forum Fonts?!
« on: January 02, 2023, 10:40:51 pm »
I was thinking that it might be possible for me to add some extra font options to the forum (Im not actually sure how easy that is but MAYBE!) - are they any fonts you feel we need? Don't forget you can set a default font for you posts! Is there a kind of font you feel we are missing?

Serious and silly suggestions welcome :cheesy:

(Please provide a link to the font download just in case!)

Iv been thinking about this topic! I don't wanna add too much because Im more interested in other peoples replies - but I do wanna say I totally agree with tarraxahum! The websites themselves are less important than the feeling of agency that having your own web space provides; its about looking at the impact of the internet on our lives and asking if and how it can work better for us as creative individuals. Do the sites themselves matter? Totally! But maybe not as much as what they represent to their creators

It's something entirely new, only really possible with 2020s internet speeds, tools and cultural impact.

are we building a postmodern version of what we liked from back then, ironically remixed with a ton of self-awareness and today's influence into something new and better?
You are also totally correct that my site did start as a post-modern critique of the web (I was studying web design in college and I deliberately wanted to annoy my tutor even if he never saw it) - and its totally meant to be a fantasy 90s site - but I think its grown beyond that - I'd maybe describe my view of the web revival as "connectivism" - the art exists within the connections between things, not in any one thing itself - connections in time, in ideas, in mediums and technologies - I think thats the best thing we can offer the world today, which is so caught up with divisions :ohdear:

and sorry for posting this in the wrong category, I can be bad with that sometimes.

Don't worry, when people do that I tend to believe its my fault - Im still trying to figure out the best way to setup and describe categories - so if people don't understand what Iv setup, thats entirely on me and a good sign I need to improve things

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: What are you working on at the moment?
« on: January 02, 2023, 07:02:00 pm »
Im currently getting back into working on the abandoned ozwomp game from 2020 - its weird working on it almost 3 years later.. I can see all the ways Iv changed and grown since then - its nice to get back into it with new ideas and a new perspective!

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Poll: How do you find new web revival sites?
« on: January 02, 2023, 06:49:14 pm »
Think of the last 10 cool sites you visited that really had an impact on you (don't worry you don't actually need to remember what they were) - how did you find the majority off them? What was the most common way you arrived at them? - You can pick your top 3 options!

Try to be honest and also try to limit this to sites that you would consider indie, old web or web revival sites (not archival sites or general modern ones).

Im curious to see the results! We have a diverse range of different kinds of linking within the web revival community, so which ones are most helpful to people?

Hi nya, welcome to the forum :unite:

When I clicked on your site I though id beeen linked to some sort of mini social network, its very polished! (It would be cool if you could drag around the lil windows)

A wonderful life is such a moody game - I played it for 12 hours solidly on Christmas day around 2004 - I don't think Iv ever absorbed a game quite the same way since - enjoy your stay and happy new year!

☔︎ ∙ Help & Tutorials / Re: Blogging Options?
« on: January 01, 2023, 02:59:51 pm »
If you search "blog" there are a bunch of blog discussions that might have helpful info for you - although I dont think anyone has asked this exact question before!

So the lay of the land with blogs and the web revival - Id split them into 3 categories:

Level 1 - Basic Neocities Blogs:
The most basic kind of blog, only really suited to occasional small posts - You can hand code your blog entries in HTML or use Zonelets to help (a little) - You can also use m15o's blog format to generate RSS feeds and standardise your blog - I think most web revival sites should have one of these anyway, even if its just for site update news!

Level 2 - Indie Web Blog services:
This kind of blog is for more frequent posters who mainly want to do text posts and are not looking to be mainstream - it will be missing a lot of fancy features, but it gets the job done as a personal blog - all are free - m15o's Smol.Pub is a great example - I'd also include SpaceHey blogs and Dreamwidth blogs here - there are a lot of indie options and its a great place to maybe try out a new blog idea.

Level 3 - Serious Blog services:
This is your professional blogging software - Wordpress, Medium, Textpattern (more indie than wp - also the one I use), Micro.Blog, Tumblr etc - These often require self-hosting or paid hosting - they are more bloated and less old-weby but can often be themed to fit into your site and offer the most well rounded features - good for frequent complex posts involving lots of text and images etc

So the question you've gotta ask yourself is where do I fit into that scale? From what you've said it sounds like you need your blog to be a bit professional, so Id put you in Level 3 - Plenty of old web people like sadgrl.online use WordPress blogs with their web revival sites, and it might be the easiest option for you - but also shop around a bit - try some of the others in that category and see if they suit you!
