I remember them being advertised in 2001 but by then my family already had an iPod so they seemed kinda outdated at the time.
However, I got into them back in 2017 when I got my first player! (after seeing a bunch of youtubers into them) However it ended up having a fault and I stopped using it pretty soon. After that I got really into them again in 2020 during the pandemic.. but BOTH my players from then also have faults now.. so I have no reliable players Ugh minidiscs are hard, but I love the format.
(This is me recording the soundtrack from SSX tricky to minidisc via the PS2 optical output - also thats my custom made 2 tone ps2!)
Ozwomp Online had cosmic minidiscs you could visit to learn about the galaxy and Ozwomps Voyage used them for level progression. Mostly I'm a Sony fanboy
Techmoan has a BUNCH on Minidisc and so does Ms Mad Lemon on youtube! (EDIT omg you beat me too it Kutan )
Ms Mad Lemon has a nice lil documentary on them:
They are very cute, but I think the tech is just too fiddly, it does not survive unless the players are kept in perfect conditions.. so Im not sure its the best format to get into unless your ready to burn through players like polaroid film. If you can get NetMD recorders then there's plenty of new software to let you upload modern music though which is cool! I just wish the players were a bit more sturdy...
Its coming to the end of 2022, so its a great time to look back and think about all the work you've done this year! How has your site changed since this time last year? And what plans might you have for the future!
To start things off, Iv captured some pictures from my site Dec 2021 and from my unreleased Dec 2022 update! For fun Iv also included some images from the earliest backup of the site in 2017! (Open images in a tab to see em bigger!

Sometimes it shocks me how much work goes into making it look so similar , but at the same time so much has happened! Oooph, I look forward to seeing what next year will bring!
My approach to webdesign has always been - change 10 things, then in 6 months change back 9 :omg:k: - Its a process of slow evolution, but it is destructive and without the wayback machine I would have no record of how my site has changed over the years.
There's an analogy I use a lot which no one seems to like, but I'll use it here anyway I think of a website like a Bonsai tree; its always being worked on and tended, its not in its nature to stay still; its always changing, every season and every year. Even a tree thats very old and hardly seems to grow at all will look completely different today than it did years ago. Like a tree, if a website stops changing its because its dead.
So I agree with the idea that they are fleeting artworks, but I don't think thats diminishes them; and as others have pointed out, you can save snapshots of them in time for reference, and I do recommend that.
On a more practical note - be careful not to catastrophise! Do you really need to start from scracth? Or can you vastly chnage things with a day or two of reworking? Don't be afraid to make radical changes to an old design
Omg thats such a cute player I still have my kids cassettes around somewhere, I should inspect them.
I have WAY more than this, including far more portable players, but this the collection I have on hand where Im living atm. I just plug it into a bluetooth speaker for playback ^^
I think its a bit of an old fashioned idea to separate the internet from offline life - they are the same thing! So In a way, asking if you can have social change without using the internet is like asking if you can have social change without using cars.
You can, but it sure makes life much easier The Internet is just a tool, its one way of reaching people and of extending your consciousness beyond your immediate space. Tools exist to help us, and if they are used correctly they totally do!
On the note of changing society.. one person cannot change society (unless they are the only person who exists). However many people listening to the message of one person can change a society; Facebook itself does not matter, but the millions of people who use it do! Thats why its really important that we make sure the messages we put out are positive ones Thats also why the internet is a very effective tool for social change, it reaches a lot of minds.
I do actually! I got an iPod 5th Gen last year and I modded it to replace the 40GB HDD with a 128GB SD card and put in a bigger battery (also a clear front shell)! I also put a lot of effort into downloading/ripping whole albums from artists I really liked and I already had a good pair of old wired earphones. So all those things combined make it a really good experience.
I think it helped my taste music in general; instead of skipping to songs constantly it forced me to listen to whole albums and slow down n really listen, I recommend it!
Lessons along the way:
New iPod parts are all low quality, so if you have a good original parts keep them!
If you do an SD mod, make sure to put in a bigger battery (1-2k mAh) longer life makes it way more usable!
Its still old tech, lots of people try to overvalue it, so don't pay too much!
iTunes has improved a lot, but remember it still only supports MP3 and M4A - If you have FLACs you need to convert them to lossless M4A
Some super high-res lossless so audio wont play on iPods (you've gotta downsample to 48k 16bit max)
I recommend buying CDs from charity shops (or borrowing them from people/library) and ripping them to Apple Lossless in iTunes to get the best quality!
If you use it on a plane/bus/train people will give you looks
Ah this is cool, its fun seeing a site that very dedicated to a particular hobby, thats a nice change from the usual kind of personal site! Im always put off mixing by all the ingredients you need but I do enjoy watching this channel that explores early 20th century drinks! So maybe some day when I have a budget

Iv been trying out a bunch of podcasts recently and this one hosted by Judy Collins (the singer) is really great, shes got some amazing interviews with people shes worked with over the last half century; I listened to two episodes back to back this morning https://since-youve-asked.simplecast.com
