I though I'd start a series of discussions about web revival culture; so I'll post a question every few weeks! The goal is not to argue for or against an idea, but just to think about it.
OK, this is a debate I remember discussing some time ago and its worth bringing it back. Does having a homepage/website make you an influencer? What is the difference between someone who posts about their life on a social network, verses posting about it on website?
From a technical perspective, theres not much difference between posting about a hobby or trend and getting a few thousand views on social media and getting a few thousand views on a website; however I feel like most people here here would argue there is a big difference! Do you consider yourself an influencer? Or do you hate that idea with a vengeance? :omg:k: If so, why? Where is the line between the two? What makes the web revival different, if you think its different at all.
Cool art! Also I reaaallly like your nightbug logo text, its very funky! Im pretty sure I have one of those How to draw Manga books somewhere :omg:k: (Also heads up, you used a , instead of a . on your profiles site link)

AKA, how Apple invented the world wide web in the 80s and then totally dropped the ball :omg:k:
I don't think I ever used the real version of it, BUT my first game was in Al's GameMaker which was basically a hypercard clone. I think its really cool to see a remake of it.. although I'd realy love to see an modern version of it that lets you use all the power of CSS animation and.. er.. colour.. and stuff but with the old doodly interface; then you could export it to the web and you'd have like LOADS of weird hypercard websites!
As a retro remake it is very cool, and thanks for sharing the jam; I am tempted
I actually really like this new edit, it already feels quite unique - its definitely more readable and most importantly its fun to explore. Although you definitely need to make the header (Digital Devil) take you back to the index page when you click it! I miss the music from your old page, the music was cool
If you wanna get really experimental, a good way is to start breaking out of the rectangular form factor most websites have; try adding transform: rotate(45deg) to your iframes (then rotate the inner text -45deg); so youd end up with a diamond shaped iframe; stuff like that can be cool! (Im not saying you should do that, just giving it as an example of the kind of thing you can play around with to makes sites unusual )
oops sorry i was unclear XD i was thinking more like little icons or banners on your miniprofile that say
Hmm I think it would suit the vibe; but it sounds very high effort :omg:k: I cant say I'll do anything about it right away, but Im gonna keep it in my mind and see if anything clicks. Feel free to make a thread about it if you'd like to note down ideas or collect opinions!
I find there is often this phenomenon with artists (both music and other media) where they kinda hit their peak early in their careers (often the first album) and after that they have said what they needed to say and dont really improve much. Its only the really talented ones that continue to grow and improve; although often the improvements don't get the same kind of mass appeal.. which in itself is interesting! I guess its often just about capturing the mood of a moment.
ANYWAY, its a fun comparison and I do it lots too!
Buffy Sainte-Marie - Soldier Blue (1970 version)
Buffy Sainte-Marie - Soldier Blue (2017 version) 47 years later!
Buffy Sainte-Marie is one of those singers who seems like she's gained more life as she's gotten older (I really hope I can do that!) Her voice has aged, although its shocking how little (I think possibly the early recording tech makes her sound older) - her early version is passionate, but its very serious and not much fun. Whereas the later version is still passionate, but its taking itself less seriously - its cheesier sounding with rock bits stuck in, but somehow that makes it more endearing - it feels less stressed and generally like she's happier with life.
The Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You (1964)
The Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You (2013) 49 years later!
I love the seekers, they are so ridiculously wholesome (sadly the lead singer passed away this year ). So I think whats fascinating about these two recordings is that they are basically the same.. I don't think there is any recognisable difference between the two. Of course they are older and are singing a little more slowly and have deeper voices, but in terms of mood, and sound and feeling. Its IDENTICAL! If I wasn't paying attention Im not sure id notice the time gap between these two! there's something sweet about that, but its also kind depressing, life needs change Even the hair is the same!!
Ugghh I have more, there are so many folk singers who have had reaaallly long careers, but Ill stop now! (Lookup songs by Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk)
Im glad you like it, and its super cool to see someone using the badge for the first time
Obvs feedback from anyone is welcome; I did my best, but its still a first draft and I know there are plenty of ways the wring page and badge could be improved. At some point I'll add pages to the wring list because its VERY long.. possibly it could get a site of the day feature.
Just a quick mention of the Affinity Suite as an Adobe alternative; its a once off purchase; I recently got a full copy because my mum started using it to replace CS3 on her new computer; it looked good, plus it means I know what Im talking about if she emails asking how to do something :omg:k:
I have not had much time with the drawing functionality in AF Photo, but I know its there and its apparently good (they keep emailing me free brushes?). Iv been using the vector art features and its been a super solid experience (Expect WAY more vectors in my sites from now on!!). It might not be as advanced as Adobes latest stuff, but if your coming from an older Adobe its prob got 99% of the features most people want; plus its cross platform (Mac, Windows iPad) so Iv been drawing pixel art on iPad and then moving it over to my computer to fine tune it, its a fun workflow. (Does this sound like an advert? )
On the point of adobe bashing! Ugh; I had "student" creative cloud a few years ago and tried to cancel after 6 months and they would not let me cancel unless I payed the difference of non student costs?? E.g in order to cancel I ether had to stay as a student subscriber for a year, or pay for 6 months retrospectively as a full subscriber. That was super trashy; I just deleted my credit card details and blocked adobes emails and I never heard from them again
have profile badges/collectibles been proposed? they're a feature i really like on Bell Tree Forums, i think it's another fun way to customize your profile
Id think you'd have to describe this one a little more for me. Do you mean like token that you can collect somehow? (Is it just a number?) How would you collect them and what would the be used for?? (Im not sure how I feel about reward systems on the forum )
Does the forum software support some kind of 'save draft' feature? Often I find myself wanting to reply but not having much time to actually write something out at the moment, and a draft feature could really help. Otherwise I'll just keep using .txt files so no biggie lol
There is no way to do this at the moment, so stick with txt files However you're the second person to ask me about it, so I'll look into it soon!
Hello, Im compiling a list of helpful links for the melonland.net main page! This topic will be a running submission space, so if you'd like to suggest a link post it here:
These can be things made by you or made by others that you like. I'll only add some links, so please post even if your not sure if its useful; don't be disappointed if yours is not used on the mainpage, its good to make this list anyway, and your link may be used elsewhere
Suggestions:
Guides and tutorials that you found helpful.
Communities, directories or resource sites run by the web revival community.
Services like Status Cafe run by web revival people.
Pages and tools you visit very often when making websites.
Manifestos or journals that got you into the web revival or inspire you.
Blogs or other web revival centred writings/videos/podcasts etc
When I first started my guestbook I used to write thank you notes to everyone who left their e-mail; BUT literally no one ever replied, so I stopped.
I do get emails form people every now and then, but usually people feel like they need a particular question or request in order to send an e-mail. I think it would be nice if more people just wrote emails to chat
Welcome to the forum, I think theres a lot of people around here who are into interactive fiction; Id like to see more story sites! Alchemy huh? I think webdeisgn is alchemy, we take base technology and turn it into gold Although if you manage to do it for real consider donating to your favourite forums!

You're setting a background on the html AND the body; thats your issue! Im not totally sure why its causing this exact effect, but I think its telling the browser that both the body and the html should fill 100% of the page at the same time, and thats impossible. I'd avoid styling the html tag unless you really know why your doing it!
