Idea: MelonLand Surf Club

This is an idea Iv been kicking around for a while; and I wanted to know peoples feelings about it!

The goal would be to create an easy to use directory of sites made by forum members! I think this would be fun for people to explore and also help new sites get some attention :grin:

Essentially the MelonLand Surf Club would be a JAUP style webring/site list; it would be connected to the forums profile system; everyone who has a website listed on their profile would be automatically included in the Surf Club; so in practicality, it would look like a webpage that lists all the homepages of members; you could update your URL anytime by changing your forum profile.

In terms of moderation; I tend to check the links people put on their profiles and it would benefit from that (although I also depend on you guys to let me know when I miss something!)

There would be an optional webring badge you can place on your site, this would link to the surf club page and have a button to take you to a random site (no next/forward buttons). People could opt out of the surf club by not having a site on their profile (they could still have one in their signature).

What do you think? :cheesy: :cheesy: :ha:

EDIT: Its done! https://melonland.net/surf-club.html

Hi Hatch, welcome to the forum! :cheesy:

Squarespace is fine, whatever works for you is the best thing (I even tested wix a while ago and it was super fun). Its less about going back to the old web and more about bringing the best of the old web forward to us now :grin:

different style but same... actually idk.. similar presence I guess

I can see that, they both go into rifts of slightly synthetic 60s nostalgic music (the kind you might find on an old tv show) :grin:

Hmm the thing is that most forums are focused on a very particular subject; For example; Ice's link is for people interested in PC building; a friend of mine was obsessed with this one http://lanaboards.com its very active, but its only interesting if you are a major fan of LanaDelRay :drat:

People totally do hang out on them, but its only fun to hangout there if you are into the forums subject. There are not many general forums (even this one is not exactly a general forum).

Within the wired website community! (Most of these are quite quiet)

Hmm, you do the same thing that I do! I always write in bullet points instead of paragraphs, which is great for writing down ideas fast, but it makes it less pleasant for people to read.

For example;
bullets;
Castles are tall, so many people fall to the ground; they are too tall! Make the ground squishy and this would not be an problem!

paragraph;
Castles are tall, this height can be a problem because people fall out of them frequently.However if those castles had squishy ground around them, then they would cause far less deaths!

Im sure someone who's a much better writer can point out all the flaws in my examples and offer better advice; BUT for me, I find it can be helpful to bullet point first and the rewrite slowly to make sure it all flows; use more words than you think are necessary because chances are what your saying is a lot less clear to your reader than it is to you!

Also one other trick someone taught me; put your last paragraph first; so for you, I'd put the paragraph starting with "But why am I talking about this? Because its a good thing." first! Thats your hook; get people hooked first, then explain the issue to them; that'll be way more engaging to your reader; then you can remind them again at the end with your TLDR.

My only other comment is that if you make claims like "you don't even own your game anymore when you buy the disc, its just a license to download it." thats a great point and really intresting! but you need an example to cite as proof of your claim; otherwise how do I know if thats true?

Overall though you're clearly passionate about what your saying, thats the important thing and it really comes across! As SilkSkull said, keep writing! :unite:

Happy Thanksgiving! :4u:

Its not celebrated here, but I cooked a roast chicken and had custard (separately) :grin: Annnd its always good vibes to think of what your thankful for; Im thankful I have time to do things I love, and a supportive family, and lots of cool toys, and great music, and Im mostly healthy and live in a peaceful place, and most of all I know who I am and even if that person is far from perfect its still me and Im proud of that :ha:

« on: November 24, 2022, 02:49:15 am »
I had a look at your site and I can see, yes you could use a few things on your homepage :tongue:

Put stuff you like! Do you like crabs? Put some crabs there! Do you like a pome about toast? "Oh I am a toast, I roast and roast and roast, I was bread once but now Im not, toast toast toast."... Umm sorry.. ANYWAY, a homepage is like your home, its the place that captures the vibe of your site and for.. 60% of your visitors it might be the only thing they see? So make it count!

Some things people like to put on homepages:
  • News
  • About the site
  • Web pets and adoptables
  • Links to your favorite pages
  • Your name in large letters
  • Site badges can be handy
  • A picture of me (I dunno Iv never seen anyone do this, but why not, Im pretty cool!)

I think it also depends a lot on your nav system; your using a frame style layout, so you can put anything; if you were using a non frame site you might need more navigation centric stuff (I kinda do both on my site).

Personally I'd like to see more random creative homepages, I think sometimes people try to conform to a particular idea of what a homepage needs to be and I support breaking of out that and having more fun :4u:

I have no idea what I mean exactly.. but you know that cozy feeling some 80s music has? Like its the end of the movie and everything has been resolved and everything's good? (Even if the words don't say that, its just the mood) I guess its a different feeling for everyone, if you get it at all:

Some examples: :defrag: :defrag: :defrag: :4u:

After SoundCloud started to implode a lot of the good house artists got much harder to follow (I was very into the 2015 tropical house vibe) so I kinda drifted away from the genre (your link is super early, I had no idea it went back to 2004!); this mix has been knocking around my music apps for years and its aged really well imo :grin:
https://soundcloud.com/jannowitz/jannopod-47-by-bassmelodie

Also a few others tracks I still have saved:
https://soundcloud.com/hugodrms/max-manie-laura-verbund-west-remix
https://soundcloud.com/andieroy/stavros
https://soundcloud.com/headphoneactivist/headphone-activist-the-rainforest
https://soundcloud.com/niklas-ibach/tom-rosenthal-go-solo-niklas-ibach-remix
https://soundcloud.com/matthew-heyer-official/novo-amor-weather-matthew-heyer-remix
https://soundcloud.com/ghost4you/the-clarstone-remix-first

Heck, I got a bit carried away there; there is so much good stuff on SoundCloud; thank you for reminding me of this :ozwomp: A few of those songs have deephouse playlists suggested on the side and those could be a great resource to dig through.

Is there an actual monster/supernatural element or is it one of those horror movies where it turns out to be normal people and everyone is just falling for superstition?
There is definitely something going on :tongue:

I watched The Blob (198:cool: last night! It was clearly a huge inspiration for Stranger Things although non CGI whitch really adds a lot to it; if you enjoy classic 80s over the top horror I recommend it!

Also watched Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (198:cool: - Its amazing how 80s adult comedies seem like family movies today :tongue: If you want a cheesy 80s comedy though this is one of the best.
