The MelonLand discord server has been discontinued, mainly because I don't go on Discord much these days and there are so many other discord groups for people; Id like to keep the focus here on slow long form communication
I actually think retro web is a somewhat misleading name and I dont personally use it (although it is descriptive and I can see why people would use it, it gets right to the point very fast); I stick with "Web Revival" because I reeaaalllyyy feel the need to stress that the past is not whats important, its about the future of the web not the past. I also sometimes use "Net Art" as a catch all term particularly for people who are not familiar with these sites. For the same reason Neocities is a great name because neo means new, so its new cities of the web.
Of course thats always in conflict with the fact that so many of us love retro aesthetics, hardware and trends; and often retro stuff is the gateway drug into finding your way into the web revival; but I think almost everyone experiences that moment when you realise "aha this is not just about being retro, its about something larger and far more relevant to today". The retro stuff is just a tool to escape our paradigm and see things differently. So maybe retro web is an ok name, since it pulls people into that narrative.
Of course this "what to call these sites" debate has been raging for years and it will continue to range on; but let it rage!

So you cant "upload" an image to GifyPet exactly, but you can link an image to it. So you need to upload an image somehere else (like on your own neocities site) then put the address to it in the GifyPet custom field (like https://mysite.neocities.org/images/mypet.gif) and the set the GifyPet pet selector dropdown to "custom".
After that when you generate your pet you should see your custom image!

Oh I can relate to that, for me it wasnt health; but its horrible to feel like you cant be who you want to be becouse of forces outside your control; and its great when you start to get a handle on things again; Im still getting there too!

Wow the spread of discord in the 2010s? I didnt use it until 2020, but maybe Im slow :S!! I definitaly agree with the diffrence between slow and fast messaging; its nice to feel that ideas have room to breath and be expressed.

What do you think makes a great online community, what are the ingredients that make a social space not just safe for you but also fun and rewarding to be a part of; and conversely what are the pitfalls that you think need to be avoided? Ohh this reminds me, I just finished helping my mum upgrade from a PowerMac G5 to a new iMac, that old G5 would make an interesting linux project; Apple stopped updating it around 2009 but I bet there are some distros for PPC processors!
