You never told us you worked for the devil
I never thought of it like that.. but now that you mention it :omg:

old man came in, told me to hold out my hand, and he dropped a big lump of raw gold into my palm
Why did he have it?! Was he a 49er who just defrosted from a mountain ice cave? Is this something he regularly did at geology institutions?

I read this yesterday and it seems like the most perfect job for you midi! Those tents look like they would be really fun as a kid - I used to have a tent setup on my bed when I was about 5

Hmm so when I was in NY I worked at a curiosities shop in lower Manhatten - I was mostly sorting out their store rooms which was great because it was winter and I was in the basement with this huge fiery boiler, I must have been the only warm person in NY!

Here is a mask of unknown power apparently:
One day I opened a box and there was a big moon inside!

There was also this mysterious door that was bolted shut with multiple bolts; one day I was like "I must open the door!" - It was kinda stuck shut, but eventually I got it open.. inside there was this faceless wooden effigy.. I locked the door again quiet fast..
Possibly Haunted
[close]

When I left they held a charming lil cake summoning party

Ok so since people seem to be interested here - an old version suits me because it means I don't have to worry about updating   how about version (1.5.2 from 2013)? I think that's a really nice classic moment in time for the game and should run well for weaker computers.

A simple survival server with, mobs (disabled creeper destruction?), no PvP, basic commands like /home and /warp - maybe basic shops too because I like role playing as a baker!

To make moderation easy I can make it so that you enter your minecraft username on your forum profile and that will automatically whitelist you!

when someone asked what they thought about Neocities
That was me! (They answer at 1:14:50) In retrospect I feel like their answer was a bit dismissive of Neocities (They seemed to have an issue with IPFS.. Iv never figured out what that is..) - it gave me the impression that they don't interact with the web revival side of retro web stuff; so they were looking at it more as an aesthetic replication, than a desire to reclaim a spirit of web ownership.

That's maybe a little disappointing because I  really believe the aesthetics are a means to reclaim identity; although I totally agree some people never get past the nostalgia aspect. They also pitch shifted into disliking the web3 very fast, which again makes me think that they haven't had a lot of good experiences with the modern net

I'm not upset about any of that though; its fascinating to see such a deep perspective on the old web that's not coming from the typical web revival community point of view. We need that contrast, and its a really good chance to sanity check what we are doing and saying about the old web and what we want the web revival to be!

A few gems I found on there

Quote
A guy called in and said, "My computer blew up!" But, really, he had only experienced the 'starfield' screen saver.
Quote
I asked him why he thought his hard disk was full. He said, "But can't you see? There's no free space!" And, really, there was no free space -- not a single inch of free space -- on his desktop.
I gave him a higher screen resolution and put a handful of folders on his desktop. I told him I installed some "drawers" so he had more space. Now he's happy.
Quote
Excuse me, there is an empty-folder virus on my disk.

Customer: "Am I supposed to hear those people on the IRC?"
I wondered if he was calling because he couldn't hear them, or because he could.

things like "XD" and "ROFL" def died out
I was a very heavy xD user in my younger days, I remember some time in the 2010s having to stop myself and say "You need to stop these xD's its time for them to stop!" it was hard work but eventually I got out of the habit xD

Oh this is a good bug  :chef:

Thank you for this report! I have replaced the move BBCode with a new marquee code that uses CSS to do the animation, this seems to fix the issue

Also fun fact the move code has only been used 27 times in the forums history  :omg:

:ozwomp: EVERYTHING IS OK NOW  :ozwomp:

Something has definitely changed to make them less appealing, and it's something that really draws in the streamer crowd, but I can't place my finger on what it is.
I think also money changes people - competitive gamers today can earn a lot of money at e-sports events, as soon as money is involved it becomes a business more than a community.

Ok so a few quick notes on the talk while they are fresh in my mind:

They were not into nostalgia at all, they didn't like the idea of geocities as an aesthetic, and they put a big emphasis on understanding the context of why things on geocities were the way they were. "Why was a gif used in the 90s and how was it different from gifs today".

This is a nice reminder for me, the web revival is not about nostalgia, its about creating something relevant to today - the reason many sites here look nostalgic is because casual html creates a particular kind of design, and becouse explorting the past is actually a current issue - we should not call basic html sites geocities-style sites, they are just basic html sites, fresh and current for any era as long as we use html!

They felt the context of a website was very important - e.g. an old website displayed on an old computer. They struggled with people not being able to accept the cultural contexts that have changed (e.g. some sites had material that was fine in the 90s but not acceptable today), and they tried to find a balance - they did not seem afraid of censoring or curating material for a modern audience.

They were also big supporters of ftp and the ability to freely access and control the physical files of your site - I actually thought while watching that it might be fun to make a MelonLand ftp server that's also a public site, e.g. a site that everyone can edit - that would be anarchy but very fun!

The talk seems to be available as a recording here!  :ha:

I think literal is correct - my interpretation of it is like this:

Microsoft - Verb, as you say its like "Run, Cut, Control" - it also has a "buffet" design style which Microsoft calls ribbons, a buffet is a selection of interactions (The editor buttons on this forum are a buffet style interface).

Apple - Noun, I guess apples interfaces are more like "Connect to Server", "Go Home", on mac if there was a Spotify share button it would just say "Spotify" as apposed to "Share". Also the "hatch room" idea is like, icons that jump into different rooms, the iPhone is the best example of this; interface interactions are like doors that jump into new spaces.

On Doku - what they mean by Zone interactions is that there is no button, the text area is a zone and you interact with the zone by modifying the content in it. So on doku, deleting text in the zone is the same as clicking a delete button on mircosoft, or jumping to a new blank room on a mac.

Its not a totally clear cut rule, all of these things use a mix of these design philosophies, but its interesting to identify them and think about how they are used!

I think my own site is very much a hatch based design; and that explains why people say it feels like old mac shareware, its using mac design philosophies - I just never had a word for that before! Id also say my site is almost more like "mystery puddle interactions" the hatches are more mysterious and less defined.
