Im gonna introject pedantically and say the steam deck is not a console. Its a mini pc And as for steam decks.. I don't really understand them.. like.. Iv never wanted to play PC games on the train.. and at home a normal pc/console is much better value.. but people seem to be into it!
So I agree (it was default on the forum when first setup) BUT as far as I know changing emojis now will actually break all old smilies already existing on the forum
HOWEVER there is a vague intention behind it too. Im secretly trying to force people into using nose emotes in order to bring them back to mainstream use >:-) :^]
I think thats a lovely set of ideals and its great that you're thinking about how to make the web a better place Remember though that it's the web, it can be anything you want it to be right now!
One of the great mistakes humans often make is that when we have good personal ideals we try and apply those ideals to the whole world.. the world is complex, and personal ideals cannot be applied to everyone.
So social media deserves to exist, cringey trends deserve to exist, so does adult entertainment, and I hate to say it but NFTs too! They all have their place; but they don't need to be part of YOUR web if you don't like them.
As for kid drama and annoying parents (your profile says your 14 :grin:smile: Enjoy it! It doesn't last forever and when you look back on it in 20 years you'll laugh at all the nonsense; but I know when your stuck living with it, it can be a pain
What kind of places do you look for inspiration for your projects, whether they are games or websites or both? Do you have any links or blogs you visit often for ideas? How to you catalogue or manage your inspiration material?
For me personally; I screenshot a lot of things from videos, or that I find online (I gotta admit one of the few uses for Facebook is groups that share cool images). I take pictures myself out in the world, generally if I see something that connects into other ideas. Taking walks in general; the idea of finding spaces and traveling is always inspiring. When your on a site your traveling through pages just like places on a hike. I also find talking with people often gives me ideas that Id otherwise not figure out on my own; and of course looking at other peoples work to see how they solved things. Oh and old games; something about old games always gives my ideas! Oh oh and vintage magazines (Like LIFE from 1950s); particularly for font/text layout ideas or just overall cohesion. Annd also artworks from just about any era.. although you have to be careful adapting them into web design because often they make the mood too serious.
For text ideas, I keep a note app open on my computer/phone, if I have a one line idea I'll put it in there, or into a todo app if I plan to expand on it later. For images, I used to just have a folder of them on my desktop, but I find a photo app like Eagle is easier to browse casually.
You guys have really diverse and interesting phones! I got a silver 256GB iPhone XS from an old man on eBay for 250 euro which was a heckin deal! Iv used Android off and on over the years, but Iv always found it clunky and unreliable compared to iOS (LG stopped updating my phone so I had to install a custom ROM to get new updates but that broke banking apps and then the headphone jack just stopped working?? ugh) although I do like the customizability it offers.
If I called people more instead of messaging I would totally get this thing though
Iv been playing Old School Runescape for the first time in like 10 years! RuneLite is great and I really enjoy the HD Textures addon; its like old but new and cool but also really 90s geeky. My plan is to become a monk and lay to rest all the bones of ugly goblins people murder
EDIT: Also I think someone stole my username because I have some lame random username that sucks and starts with AFG_xxxx
Im always glad to see more games makers around; I do Unity stuff, and cinni does and Im sure a few others dabble in it, but we have yet to reach critical mass of virtual world making potential I want more weird game worlds
I had a similar experience with college, I think people are pushed into it too young to really get the most out of it; going back after a few years of life is great!
Also you'd be surprised how many people say the found the forum via my intriguing status cafe posts :omg:k: Which one was it!?

That escalated quickly!!! You should totally write about that though because places change and in 50 years that experience could be so different of people living on the same streets. It sounds like fun; I find SF very uptight and way overpriced but it's still a great city, I guess its touristy but Musee Mecanique is one of my favorite places ever!
When I was a toddler we lived in Barcelona for a while and kids used to have firework parties in the streets (fireworks are illegal even for adults in Ireland ) Iv not been back but I know that city is like another world now compared to how it was just 25 years ago!
I like your username "bythemedow", its sorta mysterious but safe and sunny Good luck with the site, seems like a really solid start for a new site, the password is a nice touch!

Thank you for this great reply; I wasn't sure if Id get any responses since this is a pretty heavy topic
This is a super interesting take on both the web revival and the Vorticism, because it sounds like what you interpret in the web revival, is exactly what I get when I read that manifesto! I really like that you see something different though, because its exactly this kinda sanity check them helps us to understand what we are thinking today.
To backtrack though, Im gonna list some loose definitions for people less versed in art speak: Modernism - The idea that there is a central narrative that links all humanity, an unspoken deep truth about the world and art is one means of expressing that. (Early 20th century) Post-Modernism - The destruction of that narrative, the idea that everything needs to be deconstructed and parodied, so arts task is to deconstruct things. (Late 20th century)
Both philosophies had good and bad sides; however I personally think that post-modernism became a monstrosity that did vast damage to the world; but that does not mean Im a modernist. I think both are outdated now and its time for us to pick up the pieces and make something better.

the anti-intellectual modernist movements | a goulish, apocalyptic implication
I see it as anti-formal-structure and pro-chaotic-creation, but I don't see it as anti-intellectual; I think the very fact that they made a manifesto makes it inherently intellectual; but Id love to know why you feel this. I totally agree though that a lot of art from this era is ghoulish (Including a lot of vorticist art), but it's also an era of incredible discovery and light. It's always the case that light and dark arrive in equal parts.
Quote
implied defeatism; the idea that there is nothing left to innovate, that art is dead
Again, Id love to know what brought up this feeling for you. I don't see it as being pessimistic or optimistic; it simply wants to exist and be honest about its existence; which is often the best path to new places.

no pretense of deconstructing art or modern human nature, no attempt at sentimental reflection of the past nor present, just a naive portrayal of the current world and the envisioned future
This is very freeing and I absolutely agree that deconstruction is no longer the way forward. I don't think that naive portrayal is the only way forward, but its a great option. I think naivety works best when its actually self-reflective and understands that its naive, otherwise it tends to become a bore! Although you see their manifesto as pretentious? To me it's the opposite; its trying to blast pretence away! (Though its format is now quite dated)
Quote
It is art built from and with the tools available to the common person, built as an antithesis to the mainstream internet, carrying within its social critique, but not as a pretentious work of art subverting what it means to be a webpage (or art, in the simile), but as a naive vision of a webpage, the archetype, the historical origin, remixed to take into account our postmodern world. That is, I think, radical.
This is a fantastic description the of the web revival But is this not also what BLAST was trying to evoke in its own era? An art created by everyday individuals, dispelling the mainstream social order, a naive chaotic collection of passions?
108 years has past since the Vorticists; both modernism and post-modernism arrived and departed and left their marks on the world. We live in a deconstructed world; we crave hope but also fear it; we need purpose but have none; and live in a world that desperately needs cooperation refuses to cooperate; theres too much noise and too much silence. Sometimes it feels like we are at the heart of that vortex; but thats an outdated idea So where do we go now?
What will people think of our manifestos in 108 years from now; what will their problems be and how much will we be responsible for them!
I have an Xbox S/S (Never had a One), I know my uncle has an S/X (He had a One too) and about half my friends have PS5s (The other half are still on PS4s); so they are definitely out there.. although I suspect that the web revival community might be less enthusiastic about buying new consoles in general
I think the PS3-PS4 change over was the first sign that the distinctiveness of console generations was loosing momentum; it was a big jump but nothing like the PS2-PS3. That said, I think the big change in the current generation is speed over graphics, loading times are almost non-existant, quick resume of games is fantastic and updates dont seem like the pain they used to be.
However we are also in the middle of a wider cultural shift perhaps; I think people are starting to accept that you don't need great graphics to have a great game. People today will play a NES style game just as happily as a brand new AAA game; that seems like a shift from past decades where everything had to be the biggest and the best. I remember playing Minecraft in school in 2010 and people made fun of it for having bad graphics; yet kids today love it and don't even think about that.
As for the X/S, it feels more like an access terminal than a traditional console; it's just one way to access the games I have floating around in the sky somewhere. I know many people don't like that feeling (hence why most gamer friends have PS5s).
On the point os PS5s OMG IS IT HUGE AND UGLY; you'd have to pay me to have that thing in my space
Thinking about Youtube viewing; Often Ill rewatch the same video I like even if Im not getting new info from it.. New info is nice.. but its more the feeling of peace and certainty of having something familiar that Im there for.
Every now and then I'll find something new or unexpected, and thats great! That can be rare though even if Im looking for it, which seems strange because there is SO MUCH on YouTube.
I wonder if it's Youtube or if it's me, does youtube get boring, or do I? Maybe Im just more open sometimes!
Im sharing this as a general creative discussion, it's not exactly web related.. in fact its very far from the web.. but somehow in my mind anyway it feels fresh and as soon as I read it I was like "I wanna worlds and websites that feel like this!" It reminds me of the kinda energy that was in my mind when making Ozwomp, this kinda radical fresh independent feeling, where you want to destroy everything and create everything all at once.
1. Its a convent way to communicate with people: This is actually the only reason I still have Facebook account. My family use WhatsApp and Facebook for chats and so do most friends.. So I honestly don't have an alternative for that.. Sometimes I e-mail people but thats about it
2. It makes me feel connected to friends when Im lonely: This ones more complex.. Discord and Forums do help, so does media like music and movies.. but I think it might just be self control.. when I feel like that I force myself out of it; Im not sure if thats a good idea though
The thing is social media is like a compression of some many things that are often hard.. like socialising and writing emails So kinda the only alternative is effort.
So Im gonna play devils advocate here and say that I actually want the web revival to be hard to get into; I want sites to be difficult and complex to make.. its sort of like a gauntlet of fire; if you really believe in making these kinds of sites, you'll find a way. Thats one of the biggest things that protects us from the wider web; people don't spend hours making a personal site just to fill it with jokes or hate speech; also when people make broken things, they tend to be more creative and original.
That said, I DO support the idea of making help resources that are aimed at these kinds of sites; I think there should be places that explain what a webring is, why gifs make good icons, how frames work, what is the etiquette of a website badge etc.
There's this double standard where web stuff cant be too easy to learn, but we also need to express the idea that we are willing to share and help whenever needed.
I think maybe the hardest thing is helping people to be patient and take the time to go through that gauntlet; and then to have the self confidence to make weird broken things and still be happy with it
Rant side, I would like to see more people streaming/youtubing about site making, I think thats an important form of community building on the web today that most of use dont make good use of.
