Ooo what sort?

I used to have an old Remington (from I guess 1920s) in my bedroom (Im not really sure why, it was just there). I wrote a school paper on it once but the q key was broken and my paper was supposed to be about liquid so that sure annoyed the teacher :ozwomp:

☆ ∙ Showcase & Links / New professional site! (Loom.Cafe)
« on: July 30, 2022, 12:35:25 am »
I wanted to share my NEW professional site - Loom.Cafe (I really hope I still like that name in 6 months..)

*Disclaimer* While I don't always approve of professional sites being mixed into the web revival (I think it sucks away the fun) I do also recognise that many people including ME need professional sites and Id like to bridge that gap if I can.

First off I was blatantly inspired by cinni.net and was originally planning to do something more like it.. but things didn't go well, and after laying on the floor contemplating the horror of external insecurity of my own talents (as one does when a website is not going well) this idea to do a pure light and dark tunnel came to me.

I wanted it to be modern, but classic, but kinda cool 2000s design company-ish, but also simple and easy to manage. Most of all I wanted it to be honest to myself and to the ideals of the web revival, but also be something that didn't need explaining to a regular person.

Anyway, all things aside Im super pleased with how its turned out  https://loom.cafe

Design Notes:

Essentially its key design feature is that its an iframe floating behind an SVG; there is a little bit of trickery with masking to make the text appear cutout; and its also not PERFECT.. for example you cant set any background other than a solid colour.. but maybe thats something that could be fixed with some sort of flexible svg? Im actually totally new to this whole svg thing!

Once its all setup and you have the fixed iframe and a few common css files to handle styling, its actually super fun to make mini pages like this; it makes my regular site feel like a major effort now! Sort of like an entire website webgarden? The smaller pages are much more forgiving than a full size page.

As for the circle! Ugh I just get sick all all the rectangles on the web sometimes; I know this is secretly still a rectangle, but I would like more orb centric websites! It adds some dead space around the edges, but its worth it.

ANYWAY #2, I hope some of you enjoy it, apologies its not another GifyPet or TextureTown, but sometimes a lil self representation is what the doctor ordered :ha:

Hiii heloooooooo Cami :4u:

Wow this site is great, I am looking forward to the Mold section! It would be really cool if you setup a live-feed of your petri dish, I would totally check in to watch a mold race!

As for what wris mentioned, a web-jam is like a game-jam (you make a website fast in a short amount for time for fun) and its also the contest that cinni was talking about! (I think Ice is doing another soon)
Anyway, welcome to the forum :ha:

Honestly.. I think if neocities went offline the spiritual heart of the web revival would evaporate.. its actualy a little worrying that so many great sites and the community that connects them all is so tied to a single site and the mysterious owner Kyle who none of us actually know much about :ziped:

Hi, welcome to the forum, and gosh this is a well formatted welcome post :ozwomp:

I get notable rave scene vibes from your work?? Its very 90s and demoscene  Down with intellectual property monopolies!

There are currently not limits on signature or post formatting design! I think people should be able to have fun with those (the rest of the web has enough limits!)

Wow there's a lot here; I hope you post about some of your RPG and visual novel work! C was my first language tooo (but then I quit for 5 years sooo I dunno..) Maybe someday we well make a weird mashup forum visual novel where everyone contributes art and story and we merge it all into some sort of monstrosity  :innocent:

Hi Ulla, welcome to the forum :4u:

I really like that quote you posted, I think its true not just once but many times in peoples lives. Vaguely speaking of which I watched a documentary on greek mythology the other day which very-much indicated gods don't fall casually

Ah this is cool, does it take a lot of prep work?

I know you pull textures from Google Maps, but do you have to turn them into sprite sheets manually? And the building models are made in Blender manually? Sooo.. are they textured in Blender or in Unity? Its looks super efficient however its done!

What's the best place you've ever hiked?
Oo thats a hard question; I think Yosemite might have been the best overall hike, its got EVERYTHING. In terms of more local places I really like The Burren National Park.. but like most places in Ireland (and the UK) its just a bit small; Sheep's Head was one I did recently which was great too! I like the feeling of walking along a ridge or plateau in the sky.

This is a simple topic to appreciate things that make it worth being on this planet, big and small. Sometimes there a bad days, or bad months OR bad years.. but there's always something worth hanging on for. What brings meaning to your life? :ha:

For me a few things are:
  • Making things - Art, websites, bits of code, as long as I have something to make!
  • Cooking - Cooking is fun and eating really good food is always worth living for.
  • Walking and seeing places - I cant think of a time Iv ever been unhappy on a hike!

So these videos pop up on my youtube feed every now and then and Im always fascinated by them.. partly I suppose because I cant drive and I can hardly ride a bike (balance issues) but also because I really don't like cars. I don't like the noise they make or the pollution they generate, or the health impact they have on people who end up driving all the time!

There has to be a better way/ways!

Arcimoto make sort of ev-bike 3 weelers they make SUCH A COOL SOUND, they look really safe and fun.. although not great for Irish weather.. Id love to try one though!

Aptera also make sort of sci-fi 3 weelers, although they are more car-ish.. I find these a little less convincing but they look like cheesy 90s movie props which I love.

A totally great all solar van made by some dude from Australia/NZ?.. its really slow and silly, but It kinda makes you re-think travel.. its like land sailing? That makes we want to make a game about land sailing!

Those are some of my favourites; is anyone else interested in this subject, do you d:ha:think about alternative forms of transport?

I watched 2 good movies recently!

First was Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) which seems to be a movie about an evil Ozwomp taking over the multiverse. It has the lady from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and a guy who is pretending to be Jackie Chan. The movie itself was a bit exhausting, but lots of fun! Its one of the best sci-fi movies Iv seen made in the last 10 years.

The second movie was Days of Heaven (197:cool: which is a drama set in about 1915 midwest of the US. I watched it because my dad said it might be his favourite film. I can totally see why it warrants being a favourite film; its super captivating and has an intense mood and amazing narration. I highly recommend it :omg:
