Oh I love seeing well written long form topics like this! And its a great topic/observation, so thank you for posting this!
So a short history is that this split is actually super recent; back in 2016 when I started out in the web revival world, no one had really figured out the difference between retro sites verses minimal sites. It was all one big blob which confused a lot of people, thats totally changed in the last few years.
I think you kinda point out the key difference in your description; it depends what your priority is; are you more interested in expression through design or expression through technology?
If you're into design you'll prob be more into colours, gifs and 3d stuff; so you'll prob end up focusing on that. If you're more into the technology, making things load fast, being compatible, being as minimal as possible; you'll end up with that kinda site.
They are both totally valid, and they are both forms of expression; one is an emotional expression (the mood you feel on a site) and the other is intellectual expression (the idea of minimality).
Of course its not totally clear cut, we all use a little of both; Im always thinking about how to balance keeping my site fast and clean verses all the junk I wanna cram onto it. A healthy site is like a healthy brain, both sides, logic and emotion need to work together.
Although I think the distinction is actually great because in the old days people used to get really annoyed if they liked minimal sites and they saw everyone making retro sites instead! People didn't understand that they could be different things and that was ok.
I'd stress that you don't need to be one or the other, you can be both! The world has so many dividing lines in it right now, so Im into building bridges!
I'm not sure there's a lot I can say here! Is there anything you're thinking about? I think its a really solid site, there is lots to click on and seeee; the design is clear; I guess you're going for a kinda green terminal hacker vibe? Maybe you could push that more by using a more hackery font on your <h1>s?
Nitpicks: Id try making your text a bit lighter than your borders (you already do it but do it more!), that would make it pop! I'd maybe add like 5px more padding to the width of your navbar pills but that's all aesthetic choice; also the webrings section could be cleaned up a bit.
Skimming the source it seems fine, there are a few errors and optimisations you could do (like moving all scripts to the end of the body) but not much. Maybe run a validator and a Prettier script on it if you like.
Also why is Kirby randomly looking away from the website in the top corner?? Id mirror that gif so he looks into the site and then make it do something when you click him. Otherwise I think its a great site, hopefully your proud of it! -"Cool guy that made a lot of things."
Ooo you converted to Zonelets, it suits your site really well and I think having a blog is a great idea! This is excellent and I love the idea of having gratitude central tokens instead of value central ones!
automatically wrap around from the edge of the screen to the beginning
Thats typically called something like word-wrap and its 100% a feature in Atom (some editors have it off or on by default) but you can usually enable it in the editor view settings! Auto complete spoils you! My editor atm does it, but not nearly as well as VSCode and it makes me jealous everytime I use other editors If you set it up right it should also complete file paths for your images and stuff too. Its even more amazing when you start doing things like Javascript and it will auto complete functions and stuff!
Ooo, well done! Iv never used grids so I'll give it a watch! (My web skills are officially 10 years old this yea aaaahhhh) And it totally does look classy, I really like the green colour scheme Making your site locally is always a good idea! Do you find it improves your work? I look forward to seeing how it turns out
There used to be a mashup artist on Soundcloud called Kosher Kittens who deleted all of their music and disappeared, probably because of copyright claims. I'm glad I downloaded my favourites because their songs are almost impossible to find online anymore. This is the only one I could find and it's over top of a Call of Duty video, but it's one of the best ones.
Ooo mysterious! The backbeat in it sounds almost like an OMFG song (The person who did that Hello song on every minecraft lets play).. but its years before OMFG started making music.. I know they went under the alias Electrophant before that.. and they've since vanished again.. I would totally not be surprised if they are the same person. Who knows, another mystery of the web Im sad the music is lost though, the world needs more 90s Will Smith songs, they are almost their own genre of bubblegum rap.
I heard this on the radio the other day - Its a cover of Burn the Witch by Radiohead
~Moved to the Writers Corner as this seems to be more about blogging and getting paid for writing.
Everything Mambo said is great advice, I don't have much to add other than consider Patreon or Ko-Fi as payment sources! They both depend on you having an established fan base though; and they tend to rely on you doing extra work for your patrons but if that can fit into your plans that might be a great way to get some cash from your work
Annnddd prob the best resource for new games is the HTML filter in itch.io - https://itch.i:ha:games/html5
There used to be so many! Minecraft and Runescape were browser games, I used to play an MMO called Crystal Saga, but that needs a download now too.. Im not sure of many large multiplayer ones atm, but there must be some!
Thats a fair feeling to have! Do you think its all the things you need to learn thats overwhelming, or are you worried about your work being public when you're not ready.. possibly both??
Anyway, if you're worried about your work being public, dont forget you can always temporarily disable your NC profile so your site is less visible ^^ Also you can make your site on your computer before you put it online, I talk about that in my site making guide.
If you're worried about all the stuff you ned to learn.. well the best way to deal with that is to just start. Don't worry about trying to achieve a particular goal, just make something and let it evolve as you go! (My first site was literally a white page with some text an an image! .. I think I managed to change the font and that was a big deal!)
If you just want to make a page and dont want to do any html there are sites like mmm.page they give you a lot of creative freedom, and maybe its a good way to test ideas, but you wont learn much about html using them; so it depends if your goal is to have a site or to learn html?
If you want to use neocities but want a nice looking easy to use blog, you can try something like Zonelets (its a premade blog that you put on your NC site) you don't need much html or css knowledge to use it, you just customise it and write your text.
Maybe try both if you don't know, play around with things and see what ones you enjoy. Remember no one fully understands HTML/CSS, and theres no need to compare what you make to other sites; no one judging, it's just you and your imagination.
Ok lemmy seee.... ok so its an informational site, and its an early draft? So its a solid start! BUT you are throwing way too much text at me way too fast
You've gotta start breaking up that text more and moving it into sub pages. Take a look at https://sadgrl.online which is also a super information heavy site. Its actual intro page has 4 sentences and then a lot of very clear links.
So if I were you I would start like
Code
Faction Paradox is a science-fantasy series named after the Faction Paradox - part criminal syndicate, part family, and part death cult - ready to profiteer off of the endless wars waged by the immortal architects of history and their nameless enemy.
<If you are new to the series click here to learn more>
Then that could take you to a full page that that introduces you to the series with a mix of text an images. Again Id look at https://sadgrl.online/shrines/tatu/ as an example. Sadness walks you through what Tatu is, with mixed blocks of text and images that kinda visually pulls you along without being overwhelming. (Apologies if your not a fan of tatu! :ziped:smile:
Otherwise your writing is clear and I have no trouble understanding it, you've just gotta slow the information rate.
Other pages like the Prose page is also very long and intimidating as someone who does not know the topic, but if I was super into Faction Paradox I might really like having all that info, so maybe thats fine.
I think your site design is good, Iv no issues.. maybe adding like 10px padding to your <td>'s and divs might make it a lil more polished. You could try making the <p> tags off-white, that might improve readability (particularly for people with irlen syndrome like me!) The biggest thing Id suggest is getting a more sicence-fantasy feeling font for your headings, Ariel does not say space empire to me (is it set in space??)
Otherwise it seems like you've put a huge amount of effort in and I hope you're really proud of it so far! You've got all the content, so it just needs some polish around the visuals of the text and pacing
I think I discovered both of them in TheRatNest which was a super whack mixtape/podcast that TheFatRat used to make before he got famous and boring.. Im not sure if it's still on the web he deleted them all a few years ago
Pretty self explanatory, what browser do you like to use? Apologies if I missed your browser in the list, I tried to think of everything Iv heard of but there are lots! You can pick 2 if you use multiples regularly.
Why do you like your browser? What addons do you use in it?
Personally I use a mix of Safari and Firefox, Safari because its fast and uses very little battery, and Firefox because it its got much better addon support. In Safari I use AdGuard In Firefox I use uBlock, YouTube Enhancer, SponsorBlock, HTTPS Everywhere, Return Youtube Dislike and a bunch of others!
