I don't really listen to Lana Del Rey but 'Summertime Sadness' so perfectly encapsulates the experience of Summer when you're angsty, depressed or melancholic.
I have an ongoing loathing of Lana Del Rey songs for personal reasons, but Summer Sadness is totally iconic. Kinda in a similar vein, this thread made me think of this song. I remember being really into it summer 2015, its got that mix of light and dark and dreamy loss that seems to accompany timeless hot days of melancholy
Ok buckatuckles! Its that time of the month again for some forum work! Here's what I have in mind, let me know what you think below!
1. - Removing the Karma System.. I don't think it really is needed here and I see it getting used less and less.
2. Forum categories: - Rename Community Discussion to Forum Discussion and make it dedicated to forum matters. - Rename Graphic Design to Workshop General and move it to the workshop section. - Add a new board called Clubs and Cliques - Dedicated to organising clubs, webrings and groups. - Add a new board called Writers Corner - Dedicated to journaling, blog writing, creative writing and writers tips. - Add a new board called Life on the Web - Dedicated to discussing matters of daily life online (Some old Internet Discussion topics may be moved here)
Possibly remove the old Internet Discussion archive form the forum?? It annoys me that its just sitting there.. Try and update the YouTube plugin! Ughh so long story I did stuff that makes it really hard to update anything and we will have to recon with that some day
EDIT: If you have new categories or boards or changes to existing boards you'd like to discuss/suggest please do comment them below and give some context of why you think they are needed.
Ooph I think about that a-frame in the woods too! Im always torn between liking cities and not. I wish I had like a wood on top of a skyscraper that no one else was allowed go on!
Lets see, take a look at the site guide I have linked below, that explains your issue with terms! And yeah learning things is a pain, if I could just eat books to learn things I would have a bad diet..
Ooo-- You've Received Melon's Welcome Pack --ooO * If you haven't already check out the forum welcome post, and forum usage guide! * New to website making? Here is a complete(ish) guide! * Visit your look/layout to pick a theme and set a default colour/font for your messages! * Feeling shy and unsure what to do? Maybe post a song you like here! * Finally don't forget to share the forum and invite friends! We have some way cool graphics over here!
HOWEVER, the visual presentation could be improved in a reader; for example, why is it showing me the date 3 times and what is the empty link it's generating? (I think I remember status cafe doing the empty links too). It would be nice if it would show journal titles instead of dates as titles.. although that would not work for per journal feeds.. so maybe the kiosk feed needs some extra tweaking and polish? I updated my old RSS feed to cut out dates so its a cleaner look, something like that might work here too. Its a little bit computery, and could use more of a human touch
(Kiosk Atom feed on left, Melonland RSS feed on the right - both are generated from the same html page)
It sets the title as "Welcome Home Kiddo :^]" which I don't mind, thats a cool title for my site, although I should really be "Moo's News" because thats the name of the news section.. but thats another minor issue :omg:k:
Also it would be nice if we could use custom date formats somehow, because while ISO is ok.. its not may favourite, I don't find it very human readable because humans don't need to know the year first, we already know what year it is!
I actually don't know the exact number for forum uploads! Typically on these old style forums its under 100x100 max.
If you want a more high-res image though you can select "Specify avatar by URL" and link to an image you have hosted on your own site, there is no size limit on those images.
Hmmm, this is a complex project, Im not sure I would recommend it as a first attempt at learning HTML; you can totally do it, but only as long as you accept there is no way its gonna be perfect as a beginner. You'd prob have more fun making a simpler site without such a fixed design goal.
Originally FB would have been created using CSS floats and display attributes. Those are super useful to learn but they are also the MOST frustrating thing you will ever have to do with website making!
These days you can fake it a bit more easily by learning CSS flex, although that has plenty of its own challenges too!
I think what might be a more useful thing for you as a total beginner is to find a FB-like template site - I found this one with a quick search. Alternative, if you go to a FB page and do, save-as webpage, it will actually download the webpage and you can edit it. (Although you'd have to find an archive of an old style FB page to get the look your going for in that picture)
So totally do-able, but Id reiterate that a site is personal to you, its about the space that you want to create. Is FB really the space you want to re-create to describe yourself? If so great! But it is a complicated space and you might find a more personal web design voice for yourself in a simpler design.
Roaming all over the world of forums is a great analogy, I might use that one day. I actually just deleted instagram a week or two ago, its been so nice getting away from the ads, oh an all those selfies! Heck get your face out of my phone people, its inappropriate!
Rant aside, I look forward to seeing what you make on your site!

Out of curiosity is this a clone of the RSS system on my site, because its exactly how mine works, and its (almost) exactly the article structure I use Or maybe we just think alike?
Either way, this is a really cool project! One request though.. I think my homepage would prob confuse it, can you add the option to make Neon look for content within a specified id as the article area?
For example: view-source:https://melonking.net/home.html (line 433) has all articles in <div id="newsblock"> so being able to ask Neon to only look in "newsblock" would remove almost all issues. (Also I'm know Id need to switch my <div class="article"> to <article> but thats an easy fix!) Also I assume it supports multiple <p>'s per article?? Oh and what happens if I have other things in there like images? It would be cool if it created a link like "IMAGE - Click here to view"
Oh rrrr this is such a cool idea why didn't I think of it!
EDIT: Also how did you solve the issue of generating consistent unique IDs for atom? I ended up manually numbering all of mine because there was no way to count them once old ones were removed from my homepage.
Close Encounters is one of my all time favourite films, it has some incredibly moody scenes and the sense of expanse and mystery is unmatched!
I watched Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind last night. I last saw it when it was new and I was about 10 I didn't fully understand it then, so it was a new experience, particularly having now experienced a smilier breakup to the one it depicts
The start is a bit slow and the characters are.. narcissistic.. but I started to realise that was the point.. its about self obsession and the way we rarely look at others, and only focus on the idea of others we create in our minds. It starts to become more and more surreal and quite beautiful, and it made me rethink my own life a little. Its the sorta movie that you need to watch at the right moment, and it was the right moment for me
Txtbooks is a soooooper cool site and all their zines are works of art (They are actually a lil intimidating..). Next time Im going to NY I need to remember to order a bunch so I can pick them up!

last year (i think)
The one with the 3d world? Thats February 2021.. ooph.. it feels like 10 years ago
Last week I made a one page mini zine full of random things that Iv never put online. It was super fun to make and Im enjoying the weird mix of digital and non digital that a printed zine has. I actualy made a few prints of it myself and gave them to my favourite family members at an event over the weekend and its really nice to have something physical to give people as a gift.
ANYWAY, long story short, Its something Id like to do more of in the future, and maybe some of you enjoy it tooooo! Are there any zines you have collected? Do you make them? Do you like printed or digital ones more? Talk about zines!
P.S. This was the guide I followed for a single page zine. I guess there are also other guides too for bigger zines! If you want to grab a copy of the zine I did, it'll be on sale at the Glasgow Zine Fest (and here) Thanks to Emreed who is super cool for handlinging printing and running the stand n everything
