100% keyboards. I had to look it up because I thought you were talking about musical keyboards at first, but my answer is the same for either. I use the extra keys like the numpad and arrows quite a bit, and when I bought my electric piano they tried to sell me the 73 key model because I was just a beginner but I figured if I was going to dive in I wanted the full range.

On the subject of keyboards...

Ergonomic or Mechanical keyboards?

I'm currently studying graphic design, 3D modelling and concept art for videogames. We're being taught the "industry standard", which is good so you know how to handle an actual job, but sometimes I wish they let us explore our artistic side more. Go beyond the industry standard. Things like maybe do a little claymation to experiment and not be so focused on a final grade.  :ozwomp:

But yeah, that's my takeaway from this college and I guess you can apply it to school overall. They only teach you the "standard", but there's so much more to life beyond standard, and it's worth exploring  :innocent:

My experience attending both college and university (I think they're considered the same thing in the states? not really sure how it's delineated down there) is that colleges are really focused on job training while universities are more about education itself. A lot of the job skills I have now I learned during my two year diploma course at college; but a lot of my critical thinking skills, impractical-but-interesting knowledge and otherwise human skills, I got from my time at university.

I think both approaches are valid as long as you know what you're signing up for, and I'm thankful I was able to experience both. I like being able to excel at my job but also being a well-rounded person.

For a long time he was referencing the uh strongbad popular girls skit where they go "SOOO GOOD!!" but i had no idea because his impression was so bad but i was used to hearing him say that all the damn time  :drat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJsqv3JStWI

My friends and I used to quote Teen Girl Squad incessantly. That and Clone High made up most of our vocabularies.

Leet was probably the most dominant online slang in the communities I frequented. I didn't realize ROFL had fallen out of use. Do people still use LMAO? What about ROFLMAO (clearly pronounced roffle-mow)?

Potato chips dipped in ketchup are the thing! :chef:

Are you Canadian? We have ketchup flavoured chips here. I grew up not knowing that was a Canadian thing.

Personally I don't really like ketchup in general, which I guess is controversial as well.

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Most Underappreciated Console
« on: February 17, 2023, 06:01:34 am »
What do you think is the best games console that totally bombed?

The big two are probably the GameCube and Dreamcast, but I want to posit the Wii U as the most underappreciated console of all time.

It really was a victim of bad branding and timing. Casual players thought it was just another peripheral for the Wii, and capital G gamers thought it was underpowered when the PS4 and Xbox One were just on the horizon. But it was powerful enough to keep up with the PS3 and Xbox 360 at the end of their lifespans, had a lot of great first-party games and actually had a lot of cross-platform support in the beginning as well. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag was definitely best on Wii U because the big map on the gamepad screen made sailing way better. But when it became obvious the console wasn't selling, third party support started dropping off so a lot of games that were released on Wii U didn't get all of the DLC that other consoles got (I'm still mad that I never got to play as Martian Manhunter in Injustice), and then later games didn't get released on Wii U at all until even Nintendo stopped supporting it.

But if you compare it to the Switch, a lot of the Switch's best games early on were just re-releases of Wii U games so you can't say the games on Wii U weren't great. And the Wii U actually has that old hardiness that Nintendo systems used to be known for. While the Switch has joycon drift and feels like a fragile bit of tech that would shatter if you dropped it, the Wii U is beefy, sturdy and could probably survive an attack by wild boars. The gamepad is also incredibly comfortable to hold. The Switch is actually the first Nintendo system post-SNES that I found uncomfortable, and actually had to buy a grip case to prevent my hands from cramping.

The touch screen was also used a lot more on Wii U than it is on Switch, because the Switch has to account for people playing in docked mode. But the Wii U didn't have that limitation. Even if you were playing on your TV you still had the gamepad in hand, and you could also play a lot of games exclusively on the gamepad like a handheld (albeit only within wireless range range of the console, but the Switch's battery life is so short I would hardly consider it a true portable either. I never play it handheld unless I'm within range of a plugin). So games like Scribblenauts could take full advantage of the touch screen and stylus. It was like having a Wii, a DS and an Xbox 360 mashed together into one system.

Lastly, the Wii U was fully compatible with all Wii games, including the full Virtual Console. Compared to needing a subscription to play the few classic games Nintendo releases on Switch, the VC was amazing and is sorely missed.

My least popular opinion is probably that the Super Mario Bros movie with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo is better than any of the Mario games. I've never liked Mario, so the fact that the movie is barely related to the games is a plus in my opinion.

I looooove coconut flavour anything! I feel like this is a very divisive matter :ok:

I'll throw my hat into the coconut lovers box. Is throwing a hat into a box a proper idiom? Well, it is now. :P

Most online games today suck because although competitive communities can be amazing (take the early SSBM tournaments) modern online gaming is literally only about winning and doesn't breed interesting or welcoming communities like they used to.

I'm not sure if it's the competitiveness or focus on winning that's the problem as much as it is about games trying to cater to streamers. Deathmatch goes way, way, way back and I saw some decent communities come out of games like Quake and Unreal. But I have zero interest in stuff like Overwatch, DOTA, League of Legends or Call of Duty--basically all the big online games today. Something has definitely changed to make them less appealing, and it's something that really draws in the streamer crowd, but I can't place my finger on what it is.

Ren'Py is good, but I found you do need quite a bit of programming knowledge compared to some of the alternatives.

I like Twine. It's more tailored to interactive fiction than visual novels, but since you can use html and css, if you can make a web page you can customize it to be whatever you want.

I dont know the Star Trek stuff by name (i kinda just get forced to watch stuff by my trekkie friends) but I like the movie with the whale in it  :cheesy:  :cheesy:  :cheesy:

Ah yes, "Star Trek IV: The One With the Whales" is a lot of people's favourite.

Huh, I didn't know people had a problem with Kirk's portrayal. I love TOS and find Kirk to be an entertaining character (both for his flaws and.. whatever the hell else he's got going on), but I can't really think up a reason why his appearance in Generations would be considered something to be upset about..?

From what I've read, people expected him to play a bigger part and didn't like
Spoiler
the way he died at the end

. I guess it seemed anticlimactic to them.

You're all overlooking the truly greatest album: Weird Al's "Mandatory Fun".

But for realsies, I'm not qualified to weigh in on an objectively best album. My tastes in music are arguably not good.

Like melon and mambogator i am also a huge film guy, i am particularly fond with a lot of A24, Guierllmo Del Toro, and Wes Anderson works!

What are your thoughts on Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities and his new Pinocchio film? I loved Pinocchio but only really enjoyed half of the Cabinet of Curiosities stories. I'm otherwise a huge del Toro fan.

Star Trek: Generations

This is probably the most underrated Star Trek movie. My favourite is still First Contact but Generations is a close second. I was never a huge Kirk fan so I couldn't really sympathize with the people upset about his portrayal, and if that's their only complaint then they're overlooking a great movie. I think the story is the most humanizing ever told for the TNG cast.

Board games. I think there are more good video games, but when you find an awesome board game that your whole family or friend group enjoys, it's an amazing experience. My family always has to play "The Thing" (based on the movie) every time we get together.

Metroid or Zelda?

The last rhythm game I played was TMNT on Nintendo DS. The one based on the 2007 animated movie. It might not look like a rhythm game, but the platforming is scored based on the timing and accuracy of your button presses so I think it counts

I've always enjoyed the song but I never read much into it. To be totally honest, I didn't even notice the "deaf, dumb and blind" line until a couple years ago. I have a bad habit of not paying attention to lyrics :P

I do like your interpretation though. You make a compelling argument with the "supple wrist" and "flipper fingers"

For me it makes me feel like getting into pinball. In fact it pushed me to download that old windows 3D space pinball demo plus two other tables in the same system.

I loved that 3D space pinball game! My friend and I used to take turns competing for the high score.

I always wanted a real pinball table but the cost is really prohibitive. So a couple years ago I bought an Arcade1Up digital pinball table which is, I think, a really good substitute. It's just those Zen Pinball games, but with a physical cabinet so you get the feel of an actual plunger and flippers.

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Re: What is the best version of Myst to play?
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:59:03 am »
I originally played the Masterpiece Edition from '99 and I think it strikes the best balance between the original game and the improved graphics of the later releases. It still looks like the original but with improved colours and sound.

I personally never liked the fully 3D versions because they lost a lot of the original charm. I played the most recent version a few months ago and really didn't like it.

If you're interested in the world of Myst, I recommend checking out the book series as well. They're some of my favourites.

I've been wanting to get back into Myst for a long time because the world is really beautiful and I love the story, but it's a really difficult series. I finished the original as a kid but don't remember 90% of the puzzle solutions, and I got totally stuck in Riven and never finished.

Angels, but specifically the ones made of wings and eyes and spinning wheels and have to tell humans "be not afraid" when they see them.

Pinball Wizard or Juke Box Hero?
