I rewatched Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City tonight. I actually really like this movie. It didn't get good reviews and I think most fans of the games hated it, but I like pretty much everything to do with Resident Evil. Even the worst games and movies have some campy charm. But I wouldn't even place this movie among the worst.
It's way more faithful to the original games than the Paul Anderson movies, and I actually like most of the things they changed as well. They made Leon into an actual rookie instead of a police prodigy, and Wesker is a lot more interesting and even sympathetic.
My only complaints are it's a bit overstuffed so some things feel rushed, and some of the exposition at the beginning is clunky. But if you were avoiding the movie because you heard it was bad, I hope I convinced you to give it a try.
So, on the topic of Metroid Prime Remastered, what're your takes on it so far if you've played it and the original?
I'm enjoying it, but there are some artistic changes that I wish they hadn't made. The reflections on Samus's armor don't look as good--it has a bit of a matte finish to it now and looks dull by comparison--and the particle effects all look a lot more subdued. The clouds blowing past Samus's ship as she lands on Talon IV are barely visible in the remaster, so the cutscene loses a lot of the original's sense of movement and intensity.
I'm also not a fan of how they carried some of the sound changes from the Trilogy on Wii over. The voice clips originally from Metroid Prime 2 that they retroactively included when you scan a new logbook entry or get a new map hint hurt the original's sense of isolation.
Lastly, I wish you could totally remap the controls. I appreciate having the dual stick, gyro and classic control options, but the classic controls don't feel right without the GameCube's button layout and I keep pushing A to jump instead of B in the dual stick setup.
Other than that, I love the added detail. The low resolution lines on Samus's suit when you ride the elevators between zones always stood out to me on GameCube and were very distracting as a kid. And the Talon IV landing site was always gorgeous, but it looks absolutely stunning now.
Unsure how obscure it is but I loved love playing Stranger's Wrath as a kid! I know Abe's Odessy was mildly popular but I've never played it; only Strangers Wrath. Never finished it when I was a kid, but like, 15 years later I finally managed to last year!
Stranger's Wrath is my favourite Oddworld game. I've played them all, but it's the only one I managed to finish. The classic games are a bit too difficult for me.
I love the Oddworld art style. I wish they would finally make a movie.
There's a lot of retro web fans here, but what (if anything) do you actually like about the modern web?
The first thing that came to mind for me is online shopping. I don't enjoy shopping, and I hate leaving my home even more. So being able to get what I need without having to go out is really nice. Especially now that online shopping is so prevalent, it forced delivery companies to up their game and now I can actually get things shipped to me all the way out in the boonies. Fifteen years ago, expecting any company to deliver out here was unheard of. If it didn't fit in the mail box, we had to drive into town to pick up any packages.
I've been waiting on the rumored Metroid Prime remaster for Switch for years. It's my favourite game of all time, but at this point the remaster is about as likely to actually happen as Metroid Prime 4.
Oh my gawdness, it actually happened today! Downloading it as I type this.
I've been playing the Demon's Souls remake since last Friday. It's so good. Bluepoint did an amazing job. It even looks a lot better than Elden Ring. I love From Software's games, but their art design has always outpaced their technical skills. All of their games look like they were made for the previous generation of consoles.
Bluepoint has outclassed them in every way. Between Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, they are really masters of the remake. They're definitely one of my favourite developer studios now.
I'm not too deeply immersed in the backrooms lore, but I love this style of creepypasta/internet mythology generation. It's similar to Slenderman or SCP to me. Getting to see the invention of new lore, cryptids and other spoopy things is always fascinating.
The backrooms may have become too gamified, but given how it started maybe that was to be expected.
I love the cel animation, the transformations are well designed and very consistent with the Saiyan nature, the story is kinda comfy and offers a different kind of experience, I really liked the idea of how abusing the power of the Dragon Balls has consequence, the characters mostly keep their charm and wits from previous seasons. Awesome OP and EDs!
That's the answer I was hoping someone would pick. GT is my favourite dragonball series. It's the best bits of DragonBall and DBZ mashed together, and it's so short that there's really no filler.
I just bought a PS5 today. There are starting to be more games coming out that aren't playable on Xbox One or PS4, so it was time to upgrade. I originally hoped to be able to use the Steam Deck instead of buying a new console, but it's just not powerful enough to play brand new games without dropping the settings to the minimum and I can't be bothered to get back into proper PC gaming.
The store actually had both the PS5 and Xbox Series X in stock, which is the first time I've ever seen that. I'm more or less ambivalent about which is better, so the deciding factor for me came down to which console can play Demon's Souls
Sega, but that's just what I grew up with. I'm not a fan of the new Sonic games, but I still like the classics and never really enjoyed Mario games except for Mario Kart.
I miss Toonami so much. Streaming really destroyed cable TV. Instead of cool, unique content blocks like that they just play the same shows on repeat all day.
My favourite bumper is the classic HBO "Feature Presentation" video. The music is so epic.
And, not really on topic, but it always reminds me of the intro to the Monsters TV series.
Will you accept Pilot from Farscape? I love the alien creature designs on the show, and Pilot is the one character who is just a nice guy through the whole series.
