♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Re: Are we suckers for puzzle games?« on: January 16, 2023, 01:30:14 pm »I think the reason why puzzle games have such a wide appeal is because they can be enjoyed by a wide array of people without prerequisites. My mom doesn't like playing violent games, she does not have a fast reaction time, and she does not feel like getting good in a game over time. But puzzle games can be universally enjoyed and understood without these hurdles. They tease the brain as a challenge, but do not usually require video game specific skillsets or lingo to enjoy them. Plus, they give you not a lot of reason to criticize them, unless the puzzles or presentation are fundamentally flawed. A shooter can have plenty of mini mechanics that have to be balanced perfectly, and also can be super frustrating if done wrong. A puzzle game on the other hand is a one-and-done situation where people don't usually micro-analyze the mechanics or get obsessed with it once they've beat the game - if the solution is intuitive but requires thinking, then it's a good puzzle, period. 171

When I first started out building Libre.Town, I wanted it to be just that: a town, a virtual world to explore in a similar manner to old text adventures. Things I would want to share would be found in places they logically would be in: my writing in the library, photos in a gallery, music in a radio tower. I planned NPC interactions, and even an ARG for the site. ![]() Unfortunately, I found that this was a wayy too ambitious project. Every avenue opening up would require me to build an exponentially larger amount of additional "rooms" adjacent to it, and with my habit of writing static sites per hand, this grew impossible quickly. The site was littered with 404s and eventually I burnt out. This was also due to many technical issues, like keeping the CSS per-site for the lack of external style sheets. Additionally, I grew tired of its inconsistent design. So I reworked it last Christmas, to be more visually and technically consistent. It also did not aspire to be an explorable text adventure anymore, instead I settled for content rich sites without exorbitant fluff. That way, I could actually work on content for the site instead of scrambling to fill in decorative blanks. ![]() 172

You could warp from system to system, be a pirate, sell products for a profit, talk to other ships. It was an old sandbox 2D game and it having the typical 'turn around and accelerate to brake' mechanics, and 'press space to shoot' combat. I distinctly remember a little corner radar/minimap that had red blips for enemy ships, green for allied and yellow for neutral, I think. None of the popular games had that radar. EDIT: Wtf immediately after posting this I found it after ten years of searching! It was either Escape Velocity (graphics a bit unfamiliar) or Endless Sky (too late I think), but I am unsure. A printing company is like a Xerox machine or a mimeograph - you might only do 100 copies, but there's still a cost involved (When I did my zine, I only did 10 copies and my printing company was a weird little shop run by an Indian man who laughed a lot, it cost me 8 euro!); a publisher is a WHOLE other story, and most zines are about not having a publisher as you say Aye, fair. Where I am copy shops and printshops are practically nonexistant, so I forgot about them. 180

I thought digital version for free and printed with the price of printing + shipping is probably the most reasonable way to go. Isn't the entire point of a zine to hand-copy them without a printing company involved? The reason people made zines is because they were poor and/or their topics were so radical/taboo nobody wanted to print them. |
