Although I think it's undeniable, that some free software programs have "unoptimised" user interfaces than their big-money commercial counterparts.
I think that's a matter of opinion. For the general average computer user today - perhaps. But I personally have all kinds of retro technology including some very ancient free software projects specifically because of the UX. Like GIMP. I love GIMP.

They have those absolute CLASSICS for example which everyone who used to be on forums will remember, I think would fit well into the forum and with your request:
I always thought it was a cool concept... for a one-off thing, a relatable horror experience we have all had at some point: being in a school building after it's closed, random hotel corridors, exploring a large complex where you're sure barely anyone has been for months at least.
But as soon as people started writing additional lore around it, I think that diluted the entire idea into a generic creepypasta.
