✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Re: Is it really fair to hate Comic sans?« on: February 21, 2023, 04:17:15 pm »I am gonna go against the stream here and state that Comic Sans MS is not a font that is really well designed in my opinion. It's too close to a formal-looking sans-serif font to be really whimsical, and too whimsical to have any application in a serious place. Plus all of the inconsistencies within its design drive me mad. Just look at the lower-case m. I think fonts like Baby Doll here on the forums are much better for this purpose. 78

The FitnessGram Pacer test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter Pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal *boop*. A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound *ding*. Remember to run in a straight line, and run as long as possible. The second time you fail to complete a lap before the sound, your test is over. The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, start. 80
© ∙ Music Room / Narrative Songs / Music (Videos) that tell a story« on: February 21, 2023, 03:57:32 pm »Hey there, listening to Madness - House of Fun today I felt like making a topic about narrative in songs and how some of the most popular songs or their videos actually tell a story that not everyone knows or notices when listening to them. Let's just take the Madness song as an example here because House of Fun is a song most people know but not everyone really knows what it's about. Essentially, the song tells the story of a boy in the UK who just turned 16 and wants to buy contraceptives at a local drug store finally (the age of 16 is the age where it becomes legal to sell them to people). Due to his shyness, he keeps trying to evade actually saying the word, and constantly therefore is misunderstood by the poor retail worker every time, who keeps misdirecting him to a local joke store. He keeps beating around the bush and keeps using more and more colorful or absurd metaphors and descriptions for what he wants to buy: "Box of balloons With the feather-light touch Pack of party-poppers That pop in the night [...] N-n-n-n-n-n-no no, miss You misunderstood Sixteen big boy Full pint in my manhood I'm up to date And the date's today So if you'll serve I'll be on my way" ... which the innocent (or perhaps snarky) pharmacist of course interprets as simple toys, balloons or party decoration: "I'm sorry, son But we don't stock Party gimmicks In this shop Try the House of Fun It's quicker if you run This is a chemist's Not a joke shop!" Eventually some other people walk into the shop and the boy has to go home defeated. It's a hilarious narrative and the music video does its rest to make it a true classic even more than it already is. Plus it's just a fun ska tune! Watch the music video now with this story in mind and listen to the lyrics, it's one of the most silly songs out there in my opinion. 82

Ninjas and their popular portrayal always have weird racist undertones for me, I dunno. What's more important in a social media website; the technical and aesthetic user experience of the site, or the existing demography/number of users? 85
♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Re: Tabletop roleplaying games (D&D, FATE, OSR, Pathfinder ...)« on: February 21, 2023, 01:24:10 pm »Additionally, I am seeking to try out the indie RPG Shadowdark later this week! It's kind of like a modern re-imagining of old school dungeon crawlers like AD&D, full of the classics like four classes, orks, wizards and dungeon maps, but streamlined with plenty of fun QOL features. It's gonna be on Kickstarter later this month but there's already a free demo out there that I'll play. And they even have a zine!! ![]() 86
♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Tabletop roleplaying games (D&D, FATE, OSR, Pathfinder ...)« on: February 21, 2023, 01:18:56 pm »Heya, I noticed we don't yet have a thread for tabletop RPGs which is a travesty! So, if you play any RPG, feel free to share your favorite system and fun gaming stories from your table, virtual or not! And perhaps we could even host our own games some time... My personal favorite system is FATE (Accelerated more than Core). It's a narrative-first system that basically attempts to emulate the kind of storytelling that you'd see in other media like movies, games and books, more than the simulationist approach that other games have, where simulating a mechanics-gated number-based experience is the focus, with stats and math and calculations. For example, in FATE, you get "FATE points", which is a metacurrency that allows you to invoke one of your "aspects" (think bullet points that describe concepts; like "skilled bowsman" or "notorious liar") for a character moment, like in a movie. This leads to the game mechanically incentivizing the structure of, say, a movie or a TV show, where sometimes character or location traits suddenly become plot relevant. In contrast, there's no big stats or long ability sheets: it's a very free form and collaborative narrative-first game. 87

☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Re: Determining Factors of Personalities« on: February 21, 2023, 01:10:44 pm »Our personality is definitely a product of our environment. We take up behavior, values, ideas and identities from the things and people we see and the experiences we make. There is nothing inherent about us. But that's o. k.! That's how all things work. 90
☕︎ ∙ Fun & Forum Games / Re: Unpopular Opinons« on: February 21, 2023, 01:08:30 pm »I strongly believe that traditional Italian pizza and party-style everything-goes pizza are two distinct foods, and that neither is superior over the other. On traditional pizza, you need a thin and seasoned crust, a home-made tomato sauce, and minimal things to put on it: rucola, cheese, perhaps some classics like bell peppers or tomatoes, but not overly full. It's basically bread with vegetables and tomato sauce, very classy, very cool, and incredibly delicious if well made. On party style pizza, you can have corn, pineapple, kebab, mushrooms, spaghetti, whatever you want on it, honestly. Put a dangerous level of multiple cheeses on top if you want to, I don't care. Puff it up with the blandest dough I have ever seen. This is some GOOD fast food, a cheat day kind of dish! Either are valid and yummy; one is a bit more traditional perhaps and the other one is more like a party/fast food/takeout dish, but I feel like the pizza wars are ridiculous. These are conceptually two different dishes. |
