The whole "no necroposting" has always just been frustrating to me, probably because I often see situations where if you were to make a new topic, those same people would come back to harass you about duplicate topics.

OMG this is also 100% true in my experience. There are some forums where people were just...very rigid about things, and it's so annoying. I feel like a lot of that was a part of the whole "nerd culture" that used to be so prevalent and insular. I'm SO glad people are more accepting and inclusive on the internet these days.

« on: January 06, 2023, 03:35:00 pm »
I've found it can be a large genre, although I'll admit I'm going by Bandcamp tags, which people do kind of play fast and loose with.

Honestly as long as it's good I'm not super picky :unite:

Anyway, here's one of my favorite Vaporwave albums, that I've listened to hundreds of times. It gives me warm fuzzy feelings inside.

The official stance is that this forum promotes and encourages posting on old threads - old-discussing warnings should be disabled? - A big part of why I wanted to create a forum was to allow a slow form of discussion, with days or even months between each post, and maybe we are now at a point where there could be years between posts ^^

So feel free to post on any anything you like

YAAAAAY! I figured that'd be the sentiment here, but I always like to ask rather than assume.

Once an open discussion, always an open discussion i believe :omg:k: :omg:k:

Completely agree!

There are a few standard ways to do this that aren't built directly into HTML. The first way is to use iframes:
https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_iframe.asp

Basically you have an outer page, and then load the inner webpages in the inside frame, so that the outside stays the same. That way you can use the same code for the menu and load everything else separately. Cons: is not always completely accessible, and makes it difficult for people to link to inner pages on your site.

You can also use javascript to inject your menu via HTML at load time. The drawback here is that your site won't be navigable to anyone with JS turned off. Folks used to mitigate this by putting "breadcrumb" links at the bottom of the page, but then you're back to updating them on every page again every time your menu updates.
The example I have here shows how to do this using jQuery:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/20868575

You can use server-side languages like ASP and PHP to dump smaller files into each page before it's rendered and sent to the browser, but your hosting service has to support this. Neocities currently doesn't, but if you have access to more hosting services this is my favorite way of doing it (and the one I use on my site). It involves a little more know-how, but is more accessible and compatible with all browsers (since the code is executed on the server before anything gets sent over the internet).

You can also use a type of software called a "Static Site Builder" that will let you edit your page in a different environment, and then builds the HTML pages for you to upload to your host later. The drawback here is that you usually have to learn the Markdown langauge used in the software, but once you do it's smooth sailing from there. There are many to choose from.

@Melooon, this might be a good thing to add to your Wiki. This sort of question comes up naturally once you start building out a website that is larger than one page, and because most free and small webhosts don't offer server-side scripting, it's something a lot of newer web developers end up looking into. What do you think?

GIFTS!
Gifts Received:
I got pig slippers, a hot water bottle, a hat (not sure about that, I don't tend to wear hats), MONEY  , Turkish delights, some pasta sauce??, a spatula (to use with the sauce?), thermal t-shrits.
AND this Apple Pencil which maybe is a bit of a conflict of ideals but its also cool and Im happy to have a real apple pencil now!

Awww, I know you said you're conflicted about the Apple Pencil, but it's so sweet that they had your online name printed on it! (I'm assuming that's real and not a watermark, lol)

My family and I are trying to cut down on unnecessary clutter, so I gave away a lot of homemade pumpkin bread, which was a big hit. I also gave away a few jigsaw puzzles that I had customized with family pictures.

My family got me an airbrush, and the latest Kirby game  Both of which I'm highly enjoying. The airbrush will be used for miniature art and doll customizing, and the game because Kirby is one of my favorites.

Dotmidi, I've had my sewing machine for ages, and I love it so much! I've done so many thing with it and it brings me so much joy. I hope you enjoy yours too, and use it to make many things!

So I've been thinking about this lately as I read through threads, and realized that each forum probably has their own rules about it.

"Necrothreads" for those who haven't heard the term are forum threads that are open but haven't been commented on in a long time, so they've fallen further down in the thread listing.

What is Melonland's policy on commenting on old threads? Does it bother you, or do you think it's fine? Do you think it's weird when someone shows up and comments on a thread that's been sitting untouched for over a year?

OrcusLightningEarth:

I think the biggest thing when it comes to learning is usually the barrier to entry. Fortunately, the barrier for HTML is pretty low--you can start with a simple text editor and test everything locally in your own browser. No expensive IDE packages, no licensing to worry about; if you have a PC you've probably already got all of the tools. There are probably lots of folks who still don't know that, though, especially because of Web2.0 which introduces a lot of server-side processing and complicated packages and layers of abstraction. Any time we can emphasize that these sorts of technologies are optional and not needed for a fully functional website will probably help.

Hosting is another matter, and I think Neocities and others like it that offer simple webhosting for free go a long way towards bridging the gap between paid servers/domain names and hobbyist sites. I think we could use a lot more of these types of services so that people would feel like making the jump to having a website isn't as daunting.

« on: January 02, 2023, 04:33:39 pm »
Believe it or not, there are still a lot of places you can get MP3s if you're willing to look around. Amazon still sells them, although sometimes you have to do some extra clicking in order to get past the "listen via streaming" crap they put up on every page.

I also like to go to thrift stores and pick up cheap CDs to rip onto my PC. Nobody really wants them much, and you have to dig through all the crap, but you can still get some good finds. Discogs.com also has a second hand marketplace that usually has really good prices on most albums.

If you're into JPop, here's a blog with a ton of downloads:
https://jpop80ss2.blogspot.com/
Archive.org has tons of weird rips from cassettes and old vinyls:
https://archive.org/details/cassettetapes?tab=collection
There are also game soundtracks:
https://archive.org/details/folksoundomy_gamesoundtracks?&sort=-week&page=2
Free Music Archive is slowly becoming more corporate, but they still have free music downloads:
https://freemusicarchive.org/home

Bandcamp still offers downloads for (almost) all of their albums. A good number of artists have free albums as well. You can sort by free stuff here:
https://bandcamp.com/tag/free?tab=all_releases

I'm a bit of an mp3 hoarder myself. I keep most of my music on an SD card in my phone and listen locally rather than streaming. I'm picky about what I listen to and I like the freedom of being able to listen to things I love regardless of whether or not I'm online.

Oh man, I used to love fanlistings! I had a whole bunch on the sites I no longer have. The sad part is, though, that they change hands so often that you can go look them up after a few years and they're all completely different :notgood:

I've been thinking about spinning up a new page dedicated to them. I haven't joined that many with my current site, but I may have to change that soon.

I probably fall under the "new" side as well. I was part of the original birth of the web, so I remember the parts of it that weren't so great. But really the thing that matters most to me is that we have the ability to express ourselves the way we like, and that what we've built serves our needs. That's why the overwhelming corporate influence is bad--it stifles self expression and redirects our actions so that they serve a profit motive rather than our own.

I think it's important to keep in mind though that imitation is often a stepping stone towards making something unique. It's generally how people learn--once you figure out how to emulate something, those skills can then be repurposed to make something new. Since websites are always changing, it may be more accurate to view faithful recreations of web 1.0 design as a beginning rather than a completed project.

« on: December 31, 2022, 06:22:49 pm »
Do the tons of ASMR hair care videos on Youtube and similar answer that question? I'd say yes

There are medical studies that show petting animals can lower blood pressure for the participants:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3236382/
so I'm inclined to think that there's a scientific reason for it.

My first was probably Kid Pix, which I have very fond memories of, but I don't remember working it with for very long. As a got older, I started using Adobe Pagemaker, which was a print layout program that I used to make a neighborhood newspaper that I charged everyone a quarter for.

Then I moved on to MSPaint, where I made pixel dollz and struggled with the lack of layer support. Back then I wanted Paint Shop Pro more than anything, and I felt like I was really limited with the tools I had. These days I feel like layers are a bit overrated and do most of my pixel art without them. The grass is always greener...

It's funny I saw this topic today, though, because just last night I found a zine on Itch.io that all of you would probably like. It's an artbook made entirely of art done in old kids' software, and I love it! Check it out here:

« on: December 22, 2022, 04:47:07 pm »
This is a nice subject to bring up at this time of year! I know I've been feeling the stress myself lately.

One of the things I've been practicing lately is noticing when I look at people, or listen to people, whatever, and instantly feel annoyed in some way. I make a note to myself that it probably means I'm in a bad mood, and I need to stop and reflect on why that is. I noticed it a while back when out and about, and I realized that I was getting upset with just about everyone around me, and that it was far less about them and more about how I was feeling. So whenever I have that knee-jerk asshole rear its head in my mind, and start up with things like "well this person looks like a moron..." I try and take a moment to reflect about why I'm angry instead of listening to it.
