⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: Computer Stupidities« on: February 18, 2023, 10:45:49 am »That takes me back. I used to spend ages on this site. http://www.bash.org was another haunt, but I don’t think it’s aged very well. Skippy's List is a mirror rather than the original, and isn’t computer related, but good for a chuckle. 3
♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Re: Did anyone play Tibia?« on: February 17, 2023, 11:07:18 pm »Briefly, but I didn’t get very far! I was actually thinking about Tibia the other week while I was trying to convince myself not to get stuck into Ultima Online again. Is it still going? 4

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Re: What are you playing (or have finished)?« on: February 10, 2023, 10:33:32 am »I'm back on FF8. I spent too much money to get it on iOS, but now I can play it anywhere. ANYWHERE. ![]() 6
⛺︎ ∙ Cinema / Junji Ito Maniac« on: February 01, 2023, 04:36:35 am »I've been watching this on Netflix over the past couple days. I'm not sure how much I'm enjoying it, I obviously haven't stopped, so. I've been passingly familiar with Junji Ito's work from the live action adaptations and the very bizarre Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack but this show seems to be anime adaptations of his much shorter stories. The visuals are gross, but somehow I think less gross than in the manga. The drawing definitely seems less detailed in the show, which I guess is an animation/budget constraint. Anyone else watching it? What do you think? 7
☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Re: Full Moons« on: January 30, 2023, 09:16:38 am »Iv never heard anyone name moons where I live; but I found that list of names on the NASA website - from what I can see these names seem to be a result of mixed European and Native American folk traditions - https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/2019/02/full-moon-names-explained Something to go in my calendar! And probably time to play Harvest Moon again. I wonder if my DS still works... 8

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: Spam Culture« on: January 27, 2023, 06:32:35 pm »Similar experiences to some of you! I've had publicly listed emails for a while, and it's had no noticable impact on the amount of robo-spam I get, just the occasional unsolicited "let me publish on your site" / "let us redesign your site" email from web design or content marketing companies. It's worth it for the rare occasion that someone sends me a kind email. 10

☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Re: Any tips for suceeding in school, or useful academic websites?« on: January 27, 2023, 06:14:33 pm »I haven't personally read this, and I was out of University by the time I discovered the author, but I'm a big fan of Cal Newport. He's a Comp Sci professor at an American college (among other things), and he wrote a book called How to Win at College that might be of interest. 12
✎ ∙ Making Games & Art Discussion / Re: Why is Big Tech art so soulless??« on: October 03, 2022, 10:13:05 am »100 years ago, the designers must have had a lot of time. In the attachments, may I present you the cover of "The Book of Inventions". As a small counterpoint, when I walk in to the second hand book store around the corner and look at the old books, most of them aren't exactly inspiring: plain, single colour covers, titles all in similar looking serif fonts. I go home and I have plenty of books on my shelf published in the past 10 years that have beautiful covers. I'd be wary of too much pearl clutching re: now vs. then without (someone smarter than me) running the numbers. In fact, I'd speculate that while there's a greater volume of bland "corporate" art now, there's a greater overall percentage of beautiful artwork and that the range of acceptable self-expression for companies is far greater now than it was in the past. There's an additional factor I'd throw in. Big tech is surprisingly insular. Many of these designers go to the same conferences, have worked at the same places, have the same friends on Twitter, etc. They're vulnerable to following trends just like everyone else. When every tech company was using Mailchimp yellow for a while, we rightly winced. When the Impressionists did it, we called it a movement. 13
✑ ∙ Writers Corner / What're you reading?« on: September 29, 2022, 02:18:34 pm »What are you reading at the moment, and would you recommend it? I'm currently reading a zombie horror story, Pontypool Changes Everything. It's written in a very stylised way, which some people apparently find quite jarring, but I've enjoyed so far. I haven't read much horror other than a bunch of Stephen King novels and the excellent House of Leaves, so this is a nice change of pace. 14
✑ ∙ Writers Corner / Re: Bookcrossing« on: September 28, 2022, 09:20:00 am »I came across the non-profit Little Free Library the other week. It has a map to help you find any near you. |
