⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: What kind of phone do you have?
« on: August 29, 2022, 09:50:59 am »
When i was a kid, my parent divorced and my dad got me the shittyest motorola phone to talk to me without having to call my mom, even if it was a phone that only called and messaged i felt like i was at the peak of technologycal developement. Then, my dad got a blackbarry and gave me his old nokia, i have no idea wich model it was but it was red, had a sliding camera and could even go on the internet! i liked that phone a lot! then my dad gave me a samsung phone witha querty, that i used in my fitrst highschool yeras. when whatsapp got popular my mom gifted me an lg phone that barely worked but hey, it had whatsapp! Then my dad gave me his old iphone 4 and i was trurly in the smartphone world, i could play games in there! That iphone lasted me until it was on life support and thanks to a friend of mine i got an asus zenfone 3 for really cheap, that i used until...a few months ago! and i decided to replace it with my current phone, an honor 50 lite.

Honestly my criteria for picking the phone were "the cheapest phone with a very nice gps that i can throw around and doesn't shatter" because i don't do a whole lot with it, and i certanly don't do phone gaming!
If i knew about dumphones and co. i would have gotten one of those tbh. there are even phones with a phiscal keyboard :loved: but i didn't know anything about those so i just got the cheapest phone the market had to offer!

⛺︎ ∙ Cinema / Re: Why do you watch YouTube?
« on: August 27, 2022, 05:03:58 pm »
I watch a lot of youtube, afterall it's the biggest videosharing platform, and i like videos :pc:
And i also really like leaving random commentary on the background while i draw (music is too distracting, and podcasts require more focus) but i usually gravitate towards the same channels i like... when i find new cool stuff, it's usually suggest by someone/said channels i enjoy :ozwomp: I don't think that finding new cool stuff has to happen everyday, so i am happy with the rate of new cool things i find now :cheesy:

I love stuff like this! i love searching for things, or hiding things to be found etc... unfortunatley neither geocaching or bookcrossing are really popular in my country :notgood:
I remembered also about USB dead drops, but my pc is too huge to try the one in my city

Anyways even if i can't always partecipate, i still love these projects/games and try to keep them alive :ozwomp:

I like option 2 the best, i generally like more "compact" layouts! but i'm sure all of them would look good :-)

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Re: Web Revival and Accessibility
« on: August 21, 2022, 12:03:26 pm »
Hi!
So i'd like to preface this by saying that i have ADHD and dyscalculia, so i obviously have a hard time learning some stuff. I consider myself decently smart, but since i have trouble focusing and directing my energy i use my smarts in the wrong way, luckily for me i can hyperfocus and hyperfixate on a subject and learn it in a week even if it's written exclusively in cuneiform so for me learning how to code wasn't as hard as it could have been  :pc:
But i agree that there is a bit of an accessibility problem, not only for ND people but for ...people who aren't into coding at all.

Let me explain: i was born in 1999, and in elementary school we had IT classes where we made a little html webpage. My mom had workshops at her office to learn html, even if we forgot everything we had a small idea on how html and websites worked, but i doubt newer generations have the same knowledge, because they were introduced to technology differentley.

On the internet there are some 15 year olds that admire me (no, i have no idea why either) so when i told them i wanted to move away from social media they of course wanted to follow making me a very proud internet wine aunt/funcle......but they had a super hard time learning, simply because they are not used to browsing the internet this way, they are not used to having long text only guides and they are not used to having so much choice too.

I think that on one hand these things have to be learned, like any skill you can't expect to start understanding everything, but i also think there should be guides that are more accessible to people that didn't even know html exited. I found some around, but for people that are not used at finding things this way, there's another obstacle.

I think Sadgrl.online does a great job explaining things to the non iniciated for example!

☞ ∙ Life on the Web / Re: Social Media is dangerous
« on: August 20, 2022, 11:53:52 pm »
Hi omg i read trough all this super long thread and i agree with a lot that has been said but i just wanted to add my personal 2 cents (sorry if i am repeating something) ... :pc:

  • First of all, i think that even if you are not personally affected by social media (even tough i think everyone is) it's still good to delete them, why? because they are an inherently unethical platform, selling people's data, using human weaknesses to make them addicted to your platform, constantly trying to shove ads down people's throat, not paying content creators while making millions off them, etc. is very bad behaviour and i don't even think it should be legal honestly
  • Post interactions are non-interactions: like evryone on this planet, i like my stuff to be seen... but honestly, i'd rather have one comment from someone who actually enjoys my work then thousands of likes, and social media really encourages superficial intearctions, if you are doomscrolling opening up a comment section would halt that! and a like is just two taps  .
  • All the content is extremley sanitized...don't get me wrong, i think some stuff shouldn't have a place on the internet (like, actual crimes for example) but now all popuar social media platforms try to market as being super family friendly, activley trying to silence edgyer people or people who dare to post a singular female nipple!!! And they they call themselves freedom of speech platforms?
  • This might sound a bit like a tinfoil hat theory, but hear me out: social media is trying to redirect our anger, from being socially useful to just...making an angry twitter thread. I don't think twitter threads are completley useless, but is a governement going to listen to a twitter thread or to people doing protests/acts of civil disobedience etc...
  • People are just making "content" ...it makes me really sad, because there are really amazing artists that are burned out for constantly having to pump out low quality content to plese the platform. (i really love the video that has been linked in this thread, for the sake of making my bulletlist cool i'll quote it below)
  • As a person with ADHD i feel terribly exploited! once i was doomscrolling and i found a post that said something like "of course everyone on social media has ADHD, it's like a dopamine slot machine!" and that was a bit of a wakeup call to me: my attention is a precious resource, and i was using all of it on there! i felt so exploited!
  • Content gets old fast, news, art, etc. get buried in a week or less...how are things supposed to be appreciated like that?

All that said, i still have my social media accounts because i want to see all the cool artists i can't support other ways, but i am seeing them trough rss readers and nitter for example...and i still have postst there because i haven't managed to move all my backlog from there yet

« on: August 16, 2022, 06:09:52 pm »
I think probably my biggets pet peeve is pages that are supposed to be zoomed out but there are no warnings/it's nto written anywhere (i mean something like: "best viewd at 80 percent zoom".
It makes me think the site is broken at first glance tbh also a lot of sites that i have to zoom out on have super tiny text and zooming out makes it even tinier :ohdear:

I havent tried looking, but is Cybersix findable online? I know spanish fluently so I imagine I could understand the gist of an italian translation

I only found it on italian ebay and there were only a few collections, some publishers are still printing some volumes but all the collections are incomplete! And unfortunatley there is no place to read it online :ziped:

One pretty funny part of playing old games on new displays is that it sometimes makes them look worst. Here's an example. Old games were meant for blurry CRT screens, and developers took advantage of that effect. A lot of old graphics have pixelated corners that were obscured by CRT blurring. It's nothing super detrimental, but still interesting.

I wonder if there is a way to apply a crt screen filter to your laptop while you play, it would be pretty cool!

I LOVE COMICS!
Actually, my comicbooks collection is probably the only tidy part of my room :omg:k:

I am more into manga thanks to my weeb 12yo self, and since i am italian i also read a lot of italian comics...

My cousin was REALLY into micky mouse/duffy duck comics as a kid, and i have a collection of disney comics made by
the best authors :ha: i have to say scrooge and paperoga were my favs and still are ...

Right now i'm reading an italian comicbook called Cybersix that's insanely intentionally filthy ... and to think i had a few volumes of it in the bathroom when i was a kid! Unfortunatley it's very obscure and has no english translation but if i discover a way to scan comicbooks without ripping the seams it might exist in the future :omg:k:

It's funny you get to mention that. I'm currently building something like that. I wanted to publish it this weekend but it will have to wait a little more.

m15o you are my saviour!! please keep us updated when you finish :loved:

Your actually looking for 3 things! A desktop feed reader, a mobile feed reader and a feed aggregator (the thing that collects your feeds and syncs them)

I didn't even know i needed all these things! :omg: unfortunatley have no server and no apple products (well...maybe it's not unfortunate to have no apple stuff) but thank you alot!!

Im surprised more e-mail providers don't also offer feed aggregation :omg:

I am kinda surprised too that there are no free options for not-really-tecky people! I think maybe that's the reason it fell out of popularity :eyes: but there are many new things on the way (like fraidyc.at 2 and m15o's project) so i am sure we will go back to use it as a society ^^

☔︎ ∙ Help & Tutorials / HELP: rss feed reader
« on: August 07, 2022, 09:25:40 pm »
Hi!
So i am loving the yesterweb and all, and i would love to have regular updates of my favourite blogs without bookmarking 700 tabs.
RSS feed readers are a great solution for that, however i can't seem to find a good one for me! So if anyone knows one i'll leave what i want from it :3c

  • I can syncronize it to the phone so i can't read stuff on the train
  • It works (unfortunatley some feed readers i tried don't work for all feeds, for some reason)
  • It doesen't have premium/pro payment things
  • Doesen't have adds
  • Is not self hosted (as i am the least techy person on earth)

If anyone can help i'd be glad! thanks!
