Share your virtual pets from past, present and future

i've got a 20th anniversary digivice that i impulse-bought at target a few months ago. it was in my favorite color scheme (toxic fluorescent green and pink) so i had to get it!

i've got a bunch of synthesizers that i tinker around with occasionally! i'm not a musician at all and have no idea how to actually play keyboards, but i love creating cool synth sounds and just jamming out with them. my favorite synths that i own are the casio CZ-1000 and the e-mu orbit 9090.

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / searching for Sony Mylo COM-2 resources
« on: February 21, 2023, 08:22:40 pm »

hey! i've been on the hunt for any kind of files or resources relating to the Sony Mylo COM-2 mobile internet device for several months now, but unfortunately, basically all information relating to this device has vanished from the web at this point (even from the wayback machine!). i've found sony.jp's mylo website and another website claiming to have various files available, but sadly all download links on those sites are dead and they haven't been archived by the wayback machine.

so, are there any members of this forum who own or have owned one of these mylo com-2 devices? if so, would you happen to have the original CD that came with the device or any relevant files saved somewhere (on an old hard drive or something) that you'd be willing to share? in particular, i'm searching for firmware updaters and *.mylow widget files.

i was able to find a single sudoku game widget on a mylo forum archived by the wayback machine, so i could reverse engineer it in order to create my own custom widgets. however, mylo widgets have more functionality available to them (background updates, OS notifications) that i'm unable to access without being able to inspect the more complex widgets included with the device.

i don't have any pets, but i do live with a bunch of inflatable dragons! i've mostly given them natural/naturey/elemental names, like Sage, Ember, Autumn, Cinder, Mist, Cedar, and Tundra.

Thank you for this report! I must have made an error somewhere when I was adding some polish to it! It should be fixed now :4u:
thanks! it seems to be working fine now!  :transport:

i just noticed this this morning when i logged onto the forum - it looks like the navbar for the cinniland theme is now glitched and none of the links can actually be clicked on. i tried refreshing with ctrl+F5 and also clearing my browser's cache, but it didn't seem to help. i'm using windows 10 and chrome v110.

i was able to switch back to the default melonland theme by using this link to get to my profile.

yoo i love rhythm games! (even though i'm pretty terrible at them)

my favorite rhythm game is probably beat saber, a VR game where you wield two light sabers and slice blocks flying at you in time to the music.

my second favorite is wacca, an arcade game that looks kinda like a futuristic washing machine. the inside of the big colorful RGB ring is a giant touch surface, and notes fly out from the center of the circular screen towards the ring, and you bap and swipe the surface of the ring to hit said notes. it's super satisfying!

« on: February 10, 2023, 03:26:31 pm »
hey, i'm just wondering if there's anyone else here who uses VRChat! if so, i think it would be super cool to meet up in digital space sometime and check out some weird virtual worlds.

if anyone wants to send me a friend request, my username is Frost Sheridan - just look for the pink dragon! (you can also use my profile link if you're signed in to vrchat.com)

i've also made a couple of my own vrchat worlds! you can check them out here: http://www.cyberdragon.digital/vrchat/

« on: February 02, 2023, 07:16:37 pm »
what camera do you have right now?

my personal favorite camera to use is my sony mavica FD-200. it's a digital camera from 2002 that stores photos on floppy disks and has a whole 2.0 megapixel sensor! it produces surprisingly good photos for a digital camera of its age, but still has that early digital vibe. because it doesn't have much in the way of manual controls and won't ever produce an amazing image no matter what, i don't feel near as pressured to take a 'good' photo with it so it's more fun to use than a higher-end camera.

i do have a sony alpha a6000 for when i want to take 'good' photos. it's a really nice camera, but the mavica is still fun to use in comparison!

If UMD's, MiniDiscs and Hi-MiniDisc's had been the same form factor and properly interoperable instead of separate formats, Sony would rule the world today :drat: I'll never understand why they split their formats like that, it was such a foolish move!
man, if the PSP had used minidisc/Hi-MD instead of UMD, that would've been the coolest thing ever! it's pretty neat how there's a ton of different types of media available on UMD, but i've never really been a big fan of the physical format itself sadly. the big gaping hole in the caddy (instead of a shutter like all other caddied(?) disc formats have) makes me nervous - my fingers are naturally drawn to it - plus, unlike minidisc, there was never a user-writable version made, so you couldn't burn your own movie discs or anything.

hey all! i've been thinking lately about how i want to separate and organize blog posts, site updates, and project updates on my website. (this is just me thinking out loud really - rubber duck debugging i guess )

right now, i just have a single blog page on my site where i post all types of updates. this means that all site updates, tech project update logs, new artwork announcements, and any other misc blog/journal posts get mixed together into one single feed. there's no separation by project or post type (other than tags), so i can see this becoming cluttered and unsustainable over time and i want to address it before it reaches that point. excessive redundancy is also a concern with my current approach - right now my site has separate "artwork" and "project" pages in addition to the blog page. if all of my art pieces and projects are posted to both the blog page and their own separate pages, that creates a ton of duplicated assets and/or confusing links, making site maintenance extra difficult.

ideally, what i'd like to do is split up the blog into two separate feeds with minimal overlap - a 'journal' for miscellaneous, one-off posts, and a general 'site updates' feed where very short announcements for new art, project logs, etc. can be posted. (this would split my one RSS feed into two, which doesn't feel ideal to me for whatever reason, but it could be fine.) for more organization, i would then create separate pages for each project and post updates and logs only to the relevant project page. i may also expand my art gallery page so that each piece of art i make could have its own separate page (or collapsible section) for extra background info, instead of just having that extra info in a separate blog post that isn't directly reachable from the art gallery page.

how do you guys keep updates from various different sections of your site (project logs, new artwork/photos, journal entries, etc.) separate and organized? i'd love to hear your approaches!

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: Using older tech
« on: January 26, 2023, 10:19:59 pm »
for me personally, i've always been interested in older tech. my interest in older tech is actually what got me back into the old/personal web in the first place! some time ago i acquired a 3com ergo audrey internet appliance from The Year 2000 (it's such a funky little dude - how could i not be interested?). this device's primary function is web browsing, but as it's 23 years old and has no idea what CSS or HTTPS is, it sadly can't browse basically any modern site. i started searching for older websites that could still be viewed with its outdated browser, which naturally led me to explore a bunch of personal sites from the late 90s and early 00s.

i wasn't content with just browsing what was out there already, so i began relearning basic HTML and JS so that i could build my own audrey-compatible, retro-styled website. this combination of old-fashioned web-surfing and retro-style website crafting quickly reignited my interest in building my own personal site. as i searched around for personal-site-building help and resources, i eventually stumbled across the yesterweb, web revival communities, and this place!

Is there a free site hosting place that doesnt need https so i can make a second site thats compatible with it?

i use github pages for hosting my website. it has an option to not enforce HTTPS, which is why my site doesn't require it. (i believe that's the default actually) if you've ever used git or github before, it's a pretty simple hosting provider to use and doesn't have near as many limitations as neocities has. i'd personally recommend it.

alternatively, if you have a raspberry pi or other computer you can leave on all the time, you could host your site right at your home! (as long as your ISP and router allow you to forward port 80, which is the port that regular HTTP usually runs on.)

my all-time favorite pizza features spinach, feta, chicken, and alfredo sauce!
