I am very interested in this topic, but I am coming at it from a slightly different direction...

I am working on a text-only database that will eventually have a lot of self-contained, step-by-step how-to guides on self-sufficiency (e.g.: homesteading, civil engineering, etc.). The smaller the size, the better, so as to make it as portable and as shareable as possible. Thanks to the suggestions of a friend, it will also be released on other protocols (e.g.: gopher, gemini, etc.) with a zero-clause BSD license, so as to make it completely free to anyone and everyone the world over.

This project was inspired by research into Ecology (particularly The Global Village Construction Set, FarmBot, Low-Tech Magazine's solar-powered website, and an electronic schematic made in ASCII art that I had come across a long time ago).

:pc: :defrag:

Interesting idea. I sometime toy with the idea of doing something similar, but for computers stuff. It would be essentially an offline website with minimal CSS.

As you said, the smaller it is the better. Another idea of mine was to make something similar to wikihow but with SVG images instead (as this format would be smaller than jpg or png images).

Perhaps it is a desire for mental-emotional calm and a sense of genuine connection that isn't present elsewhere? The Internet is just the medium.

That's definitively the case, at least for me personally. People feel much more "real" on this corner of the web.

When I first discovered the Yesterweb, I was filled with a feeling of wonder. The thing has so much soul compared to the "normal" internet.

This is no longer case after I made my Halloween shrine, but according to my archives, my Neocities website was 275 kb in size.

It would be interesting to see how much stuff I could cram in this version of the website while still being able to have the full thing on a floppy.

I guess you could probably get a lot of text-only page since html file are usually very small

When I first dound this corner of the web I had the same thoughts.

I think the term coined by Sadgirl, that being the Yesterweb works best.

While the term "yester" definitively implies "old", I think it has a less stric definition than "old" and "retro" - as both of those things implies things that existed in a specific timeframe.

For example, when you takes the term "retro gaming", I think most people think about games that were made in the past rather than say an indie game that attempts to replicate an older style of game.

Another pssible alternative for the term Yesterweb would be the Oldschool Web. The term "oldschool" implies something that imitate old traditions - which is exactly what we are doing.

That being said, I perfer the term Yesterweb since it's easier to say IMO.

I too made an Halloween shrine on my personal website.

I think the best course of action is to make a site that lay between the two worlds.

I don't think that making a site with only html is the "correct" way to go but I don't think that the site content should be overblow with content either.

I believe the best approach is a website that only use HTML + CSS and being mindful of the size of the website.

For instance my personal neocities site (not the one linked here, but you can easily find it) weight about 460 Kb. The main graphic element is a smol 416 x 416 png image that is used as a background.

Aside from the main logo and some button, there is not much else aside text.

So I think it's possible to make a site that has a soul with minimal CSS while still being acessible to reader tools and terminals.

I am kinda in a similar boat. I first experienced the web in 2007. I never witnessed sites like Geocities or Myspace.

That being said, I certainly came across some site that had the old internet vibe - so perphaps that's where my nostalgia comes from.

After all, it's not like every website on the web became "modern" in one day. It was a slow progression.

As other have said, it is better to remake our favorite aspects in the past rather than dwell on it. I think everyone here agree that dial up speed should remains in the past.

Hi all,

If you're not aware, RuneScape was an online java game created in 2001. The game was being continually updated with over 400 different versions existing, but the developers didn't implement any full version control until 2012 (aside from a single tape backup they found of 2007).

Therefore we're appealing here to see if anybody has it saved on an old computer, or hard drive. Even if you just played it once for a minute to see what it was then never again, you should have the full game data, because it was automatically downloaded via browser.

The RuneScape Archive created a new open-source search tool which you can download here – this will automatically scan a drive to find all the RuneScape game files, and combine them into a single file you can upload. (It works all the way back to Windows 95, so if you have any old machines you could put the tool on a USB and run it from there).

If you would like to search manually yourself, check out our page on the Lost Media Wiki.

If you’re interested, you might like to check out our website which explains the project in full detail, addresses frequently asked questions, and includes a link to our discord server.

Thanks in advance.

Due to my hear problems, I have pretty much avoided watching any movie in the last decade or so.

This means I have never watched:

  • Harry Potter
  • Superhero stuff
  • Star Wars
  • The Matrix
  • Any horror movie
  • Star Trek
  • Anything on Netflix or streaming services
  • Pretty much everything else

So yeah, I am quite out of the loop when it comes to mainstream stuff, especially movies.

I think the only movie I have watched this last decade was Lord of the Rings, and it is only because I was curious how well the book was adapted into film after reading it.

When I was a teenager I was really into RuneScape 3, despite it's reputation of being the "tainted" version of RuneScape as opposed to Oldschool RuneScape.

I was born in 2000s. I believe I witnessed the tail end of web 1.0.

I don't like how boring and sterile the web is nowadays. I like browsing the Yesterweb as pretty muvh you encounter as a soul.

I don't think I was ever exposed to things like Geocities or MySpace, but now I see why people missed platforms like these.

I'm pretty sure everyone here has already seen the social media topic. A common theme I saw there, and that I can very much relate to, is that people saw a need to be distracted, and almost instinctively went on a social media site. To me, for a couple months, I even started using tumblr and youtube again just because I couldn't focus and needed to stop doing what I was doing.

The alternative I found was music. Whenever my thoughts feel cluttered and I feel like I need to take a break from what I'm doing, I just listen to whatever. It has the benefit where you can choose whether to actually pay attention to it, or to just let it be in the background. So it gives you a chance to organize your thoughts and regain your focus.

I feel like a good alternative has to be something where you, yourself, don't put in any effort. But it shouldn't be like social media where it occupies your head just enough so that you can't think of anything else. It should allow you to recompose yourself.

Anyone else have things that they used to scratch the "itch" of social media?

The best alternative that I've found for me is to listen to music on a device with no social media (I use Moonshell2 on a Nintendo DS) and I browse Yesterweb forums (Melonland, Yesterb forum).

I also sometime write articles for my Neocities site.

When I was young I played a lot of Super Mario 64 DS and Pokemon Platinum. During my teenage years, I was really into RuneScape 3 (yes I know, very heretic).

Nowadays, I am a bit more relaxed on the gaming side of things. I am more focused on RuneScape preservation and creating my own games.

The worst thing about social media is that it gets you even if you are well aware of the danger.

A month ago, I ended up in a situation where I had to spent most day of my week watching YouTube on my Switch to kill time. I thought I was well prepared and could protect myself from the algorithm. I was wrong.

I almost got depression from watching video suggested by the algorithm. As soon as I could get back home, I sealed the console away in a closet.

Do not underestimate the power of social media.

✁ ∙ Web Crafting / Re: Does anyone have personal website pet peeves?
« on: August 17, 2022, 04:28:15 pm »
I think probably my biggets pet peeve is pages that are supposed to be zoomed out but there are no warnings/it's nto written anywhere (i mean something like: "best viewd at 80 percent zoom".
It makes me think the site is broken at first glance tbh also a lot of sites that i have to zoom out on have super tiny text and zooming out makes it even tinier :ohdear:

There is quite a few Neocities sites like this sadly.
