Ren'Py is good, but I found you do need quite a bit of programming knowledge compared to some of the alternatives.
I like Twine. It's more tailored to interactive fiction than visual novels, but since you can use html and css, if you can make a web page you can customize it to be whatever you want.
I've worked on a few different visual novels all using Ren'Py. It's open source, free, and there's a lot of resources and tools people make for it. I'd recommend looking into the forums. People share a lot of code snippets there. Itch.io also has a lot of tools and assets made for Ren'Py.
The scripting language is pretty easy to understand (I think) when starting up. VimislikArt has pretty good simple tutorials for Ren'py that can help you get an idea of what you might be getting into.
Another free engine I've heard of is TuesdayJs. I've never used it before though. I've heard TyranoBuilder can be janky but it's an option. I'd avoid Visual Novel Maker; I haven't heard a good thing about it.
I'm definetly gonna use that guys tutorials even if I use another engine! I actually have been looking at twine and some other less code heavy alternatives. Thank you both for the resources!
I think you and me are the two biggest movie buffs on the forum, so It'll be intresting to see who else replies Lets see Im gonna have to invent a few genres here!
Comedy The Darjeeling Limited (2007) - My fav Wes Anderson film, its also a great travel film so Im cheating!
Travel Wild (2014) - I might have already grown out of this one, but its a really good movie.
Fantasy The Dark Crystal (1982) - What a weird movie, I was given it on VHS by my first crush wen I was about 7
Sci-fi Until the End of the World (1991) - The original cut was 20 hours long! I recommend the 6 hour version; I think this movie changed my life but m not sure how.
Action Repo Man (1984) - Its so perfect its almost generic!
Teen Drama Empire Records (1995) - Not actually a great movie, but it captures something about the 90s that I feel like we've lost today.
Drama Lost in Translation (2003) - I think this is the best film of all time; I die every time I watch it.
Thriller Rear Window (1954) - Its amazing how a film thats entirely set in one room is so captivating.
Animation Porco Rosso (1992) - Spirited Away might be their best film, but this grows on me more every year.
Western True Grit (2010) - I love the way they did the language in this, its just a perfect western all around.
I'm a huge movie person and I've never seen any of these, I now have a list for the weekend!!!
So I am currently working on a visual novel that I've wanted to make since forever. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about VN engines? My first thought is RenPy but I'm open to other suggestions and would greatly appreciate learning resources! I'd love to let some people here be the first to see/play because this community is what inspired me to finally make it! Let me know if you want to help at all or would like to see it when it's ready!
You’re welcome, SkillSkull. I agree, AI is getting very good at writing and generating content. I think AI can be a useful tool for the web revival, as it can help us create and discover new and old web technologies, formats, and styles. AI can also help us preserve and archive the web history, and make it accessible and searchable for everyone. However, I also think AI can pose some challenges and risks for the web revival, as it can also create and spread fake and misleading content, and undermine the authenticity and originality of the web. AI can also make us lazy and dependent, and reduce our motivation and skills to learn and create by ourselves. Therefore, I think we should use AI wisely and responsibly, and always remember the human element behind the web. What do you think, SkillSkull?
Okay coolest reply I've ever received lol. I do agree that AI can have it's uses in automation and accessibility but much to your point it needs to be used responsibly. We have all seen with AI art how poorly and controversial it can go. I'm actually waiting for my ChatGPT login as we speak, I feel like once I use it for a bit then I'll be able to form a more complete opinion!
Osu! player here! I also tried clone hero for a while, I play FFR (an old downloadable DDR clone on PC), I've tried DJ hero too but ended up losing the controller for it sadly.
As someone who has also never touched the game out of intimidation I'd say 93 just for the vibes or 2000 cause of the looks but probably way more accessible then the first
Pinball Wizard Butch Lesbian is something I would have never conjured up but I love it! Also knowing rock of the time and reading the lyrics it isn't all that far of a stretch (granted I don't know much about The Who and only just heard the song on this thread lol). Possibly one of my new favorite songs
