Hey guys, I thought browser windows are pretty personal things that give insight into people, but aren't talked about in that way much. This could be silly  but I want to give it a shot. Here's mine.

I found this Japan documentary made by one of my favourite documentary presenters - it seems to have been filmed in the year 2000!

Thanks for this! I really liked seeing where the internet was in terms of social life in Japan in 2000, in my head I kind of didn't see it as a massive cultural thing but that's probably my 2002 self speaking. It's funny to hear a presenter actively passing judgement on things, and while I don't agree with too many of the assertions it's definitely refreshing.

I have to say there is a certain level of irony in posting this in the writers corner though

I think that people usually write long or short because they want to do that. If we ask users who typically write short posts to write long posts, or users who typically write long posts to write short posts it might be less enjoyable for them.

Long posts can often introduce numerous concepts, and points of discussion, which can facilitate much more conversation. I think it's perfectly okay not to write long posts however a staple of this style of community is allowing people the freedom to express themselves.

I definitely don't think there is a mindset that people have to write long posts on here, I think if there is any expectation it is to contribute something more than just a reaction like "wow that's cool". I'd guess the vast majority of people on here writing long posts on here are simply doing it because they enjoy it and take pleasure in it

✑ ∙ Writers Corner / Re: How do you write longer replies?
« on: January 24, 2023, 08:58:22 am »
My main strategy is to write like I'm thinking and exploring the idea, and to actually do those things and meander my way through the subject (not to imply that people don't usually think when writing responses haha).

I definitely post less because I try to consider my messages more, and oftentimes I'll plan, write two or three paragraphs and decide that I don't want to post any of it, or even reply to the topic anymore. More considered stuff without clearly socially defined responses can be trickier too, like the forum doesn't have too many in-jokes or forum specific slang and responses so you won't always automatically know what to say, and it'll take more effort.

People might have writing backgrounds as well, I really love my literature and I'm sure other people on here will as well, so that can definitely add to the whole long-winded sentences thing.

And, sometimes you just can't write about something because deep down you don't really feel like it, or there's nothing to write. I only really write long responses when things grab my attention (I'm not a masochist!!).

My only advice is: try to write with the same mental muscles that you're also holding a conversation with in real life.

I definitely relate to this, I swear I adopt a verry overly conversational tone in my head when I'm both reading and writing

I predict we're going to have to get used to our morals and ethics being uprooted in the future, too, no matter how progressive we currently think we are. We will also have to adapt with the times - and things that are considered absolutely taboo and reprehensible at large today will be at the forefront of liberation movements in the future.

I for one plan to stay 'up to date'.

I wonder if this is because cultural values are still changing, or actions are finally catching up to beliefs. Values are definitely transferred less from generation to generation. I think what's new is the ability to further our attitudes towards values in idle moments by ourselves, rather than solely through actions in the physical world, this lets us develop our beliefs at a much faster pace, and potentially without much connection to our immediate circumstances. I wouldn't ever feel the need to compromise on treating people with respect and dignity however sometimes I wonder if our compassionate natures might end up hurting us somehow in the long run.

I think a lot of people, following 'those recent events' (including me sometimes) are sometimes quite far away from the traditional human experience, and sometimes see what were once normal behaviours and ways of interacting as abnormal. It will be interesting to see if we are able to move away from conventional morals and ethics or if it's too difficult for us to stomach. I hope that we retain the idea of being content with small, kind lives, as in reality I think most of us are simple people.

Society is always changing, it's one of the few things that I see as constant about it. What I want to know is what you think is going to happen to the way we use the internet and culture in the next few years .

Are we reaching a pressure point, where the increased hostility of social media user interfaces, and the experience as a whole hurts the right person enough for them to make a difference, and for enough people to be willing to follow? Are we going to see a dramatic exodus of internet interaction as a whole with the advent of AI generated comments? Will we again see a stronger delineation between the adult world and the adolescent world, or will popular content continue to attempt to appeal to every demographic possible, but fail to truly captivate any of them?

That's a lot of questions, but I think some of them are questions worth answering, even if they seem awfully intangible sometimes.

I think that as social media and ai content becomes more addictive it will be easier to be seen as taking the "humanist" position by abstaining from it, and this will be popularised, and also easier to criticise those who continue to use it, for better or for worse. That's one of my ones :ozwomp:

I was also picking between duckduckgo and ecosia. I think either one is good in the end, with duckduckgo also being carbon negative, and ecosia supposedly also not tracking your searches, but I went for duckduckgo as well because it's reliable and has good widgets and info-boxes when you search things up.

I like dogs, but I would never adopt one because they are too high maintenance.

I like dogs, I like cats. I didn't realise I was a cat person until I got my second dog though

I loved Gordon, Gino & Fred's road trip! They felt like really great friends when I watched it, always knowing exactly how to annoy each other (like good friends should), but also it feels like an adventure to watch. I liked the episode where they compete in I think a warehouse market in France for the best dish, and it's a food festival

I haven't watched the Christmas special yet because I didn't know it existed but I might need to check it out now!
