The shiny object syndrome is a condition where a person picks up a new idea and then throws it away for a newer idea, similar to when a toddler picks up a shiny object from the ground before immediately losing interest and picking up a new shiny object, hence the name "shiny object syndrome".

For a while now I have been suffering from this same condition, hopping from Linux Distro after Distro (I am currently trying to stick to one, switching back from Ubuntu Unity to Pop!_OS again), Programming language after Programming language, Project after Project, Goal after goal, and not really accomplishing anything.
Which I find absolutely frustrating as I want to do things that I have been wanting to do for a long time (like making a long-term video game project) and accomplish some portion of my dreams but never doing it because I keep getting distracted.

I think it's also important to note that I still have a YouTube addiction despite attempts of trying to control that with extensions like unhooked.

Point is that there are a lot of ideas on the table and every time I try to pick-up one and do something with it, progress ends up stopping after some period of time.

This is an example of A/B testing, a technique used by companies, advertisement agencies, and plenty more to get the most clicks by making slight changes to the appearance multiple times until there is a design that gets the most clicks. However, I would just keep it how it is for now, but maybe try using a nontransparent background?

i LOVE the idea of hidden areas on sites. i used to love collecting badges people would leave in their secret grottos hidden throughout their website. what a great reminder, i need to add that to my to-do list!

On second thought, don't change the background.

✎ ∙ Making Games & Art Discussion / Vector drawings
« on: April 22, 2022, 02:16:30 am »
Definition of vector graphics:
A form of graphics that doesn't use pixels but with sets of shapes that the computer renders.

Almost a year ago during summer I discovered that I had a copy of adobe illustrator from my school, and they seemed to forget that I still had access. With that opportunity I made this.
I continued to doodle with the program in my spare time but they are all probably lost to time. Once school started again, I was removed from having illustrator.

After sometime I installed Inkscape which is a free alternative to illustrator. I just started learning the program, maybe I will show some drawings later?

I think that while all people drawn to puzzle games have their own reasons, it all boils down to that "ah-ha!" moment. Most people enjoy a challenge, and puzzle games are just made for those who enjoy thinking in interesting ways.

Ah-ha! That explains it.

Sometimes my guilty pleasure is watching LinusTechTips on YouTube  A few months ago they did a whole thing where they tried to use Linux as their main gaming computers for a month and.. it did not go very well..

I have been meaning to watch that video for a while, so I had to watch it before making this.

While watching: Ok, BEFORE YOU INSTALL YOUR OS! Please check your hardware with the live environment before installing. It is clear to me that Linus... Isn't very Experienced with Linux. Fortunately, since I had plenty of experience with Linux from my time at free geek, I am safe to assume that my experience has been pretty smooth so far (Except for Video playback randomly lagging). Also note that while Linus does say "NVIDIA drivers are hard to install" it's actually pretty simple. It's just you need to use the terminal (Which can be tricky for a newbie I suppose).

Now that we got that our of the way, let's respond!

As a Mac gamer the situation is even worse :ohdear: There is wine for Mac but its not good, you can also get a paid version of wine called CrossOver, but its only really good for games that are 10+ years old.

It has occurred to me that Apple, is kinda a jerk to it's developers. They depleted OpenGL and don't support Vulkan which both are critical for proper wine support. You are better off with using duel boot or a VM.

Recently I got an Xbox series S and oh my gosh its so much better! Its cheaper than a graphics card, gamepass is a great deal for games, and everything just runs perfectly with no effort! You can even stop playing a game on xbox, then stream it on a laptop and pick up exactly where you left off, its amazing!

Ok ok I don't wanna write an xbox ad, and as an indie developer who cannot publish games to xbox (yet) its not good; but if all you wanna do is play games it really is incredible.

While I do puffer using a PC over a console, looking in the eyes of a mac user, it's not a bad choice. A console is very easy to set up and run without going threw installing steam, wine, patches, or setting up drivers. The only con is the lack of control.

We might be entering a phase where consoles are the top dog in games again, until Linux and cross platform PC gaming really catches up :omg:

While I get the popularity of consoles, I don't think consoles are top dog. PC gaming has more support, freedom and customization than consoles because it's easier to enter, while consoles have exclusives, cheaper, and have better advertising. So it's safe to say that neither are top dogs or low dogs.

Previously, I made a post about Oswamp's Voyage with how well it ran with wine. But it seems like no one was interested so I made this instead.

Recently, I got into the Linux world with vanilla fedora as my distro of choice. While I don't dislike Windows, I just wanted to try something new.

However, since it's an entirely different platform, Windows programs won't run. Unless, you use a compatibility layer like wine. But even then, it's not like they will run 100% of the time. In fact, it is up to luck to see if it runs at all. Which means that some programs may have some glitches, some programs may run better than windows, and others like I said, won't run at all.

There is also Valve's proton. A modified version of Wine that is pacifically for gaming. While this has the same issues as regular wine that we talked about earlier, it has the potential of supporting more games.

This leads us to Community launchers and patches, basically, wine is the base, the game is the house, and the community patches up the holes. While they aren't required to play on Linux, they are helpful.

Finally there is native versions designed for Linux, these don't require wine or proton and are less interesting.

So I was looking at Patrick's Parabox on steam and I see how it's rated "Overwhelmingly positive". The same things goes for Portal & Portal 2. But, what makes these puzzle games tick? Are they relaxing? Do our brains like thinking complexly? Is complexly even a word?

Internet Discussion

Hi, so Iv decided to move Internet Discussion to the archive (You can read it but cannot make new posts). WHY THO? Put simply, most of the posts there are about being unhappy with the internet today.. that's fine, most of the internet today is a pain and I'm unhappy with it too! However I want this forum to be about constructing something positive and new, not focusing on the bad of the world.

I want the forum to be about things that inspire and make people happy; I know that some of the discussions on there, such as metaverse, the web3, social media etc are SUPER important issues to discuss... I suppose though.. I don't really want to be the gatekeeper of those discussions, its not what brings me joy in life.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes, if everyones really annoyed at this we can restore it! It wont be deleted anytime soon as I think these discussions have important historical relevance tooo.

Feel free to voice your opinion!

This is an understandable move. But maybe bring it back after a week or two? I think the forum just needs to take a break from internet discussion. It's our fault for trashing it. (Is there a better word?)

The tablet was a great deal, I got it on ebay for 80 euro with no stylus. Then a family member gave me their spare stylus, but it was too old for my tablet, so I sold it and got the right one for the same price. Anyway all and all with some trading, I got a super professional tablet for 80 euro!

Took me a while to realize but turns out I mixed up the names of graphics tablet and drawing tablet. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE IN REVERSE! But I am glad that you found a good deal.

A bit of a stretch? Also, have you tried LibreOffice or Godot? There is so much stuff on here that it's kinda hard to say anything at all. But what I will say is that I wished I invested into a drawing tablet, the electric piano and graphics tablet I have is no use.

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Playing Ozwamp's Voyage on Linux with Wine.
« on: April 13, 2022, 03:57:17 am »
I am gonna keep this short since I don't have much to say.

Some time ago I asked about Linux support for the game and Melon (The Developer) said that he tried to but it failed. But, ever since I installed Fedora Linux on my laptop I got curious to see how well it would run with Wine. When I tried it the game ran without any issues at all but the problem was that it ran slow. But since the game was pretty graphics intensive I decided to just put it off to the side since my laptop wasn't the greatest.

The next day I decided to install Fedora on my gaming rig (It wasn't about the game) and after I ran a few games on the machine I got curious again and decided to give Ozwamp's Voyage another try. This time it ran flawlessly, no glitching, no crashing, and no lag (except for the more intense levels). I also kinda forgot how beautiful the game was.

Would I recommend installing Linux just to play the game? No.
Would I recommend trying it for people who are already Linux users? Yes.

Update: So it turns out, moving to a different window freezes the game.
