Since I transitioned away from using (most) social media run by big companies (deleted my twitter, instagram, and discord accounts but I just can't replace reddit* or youtube), I've found it difficult to make the kind of firm online connections that I used to, and as great as real-life friends are it's not easy to find someone who's into all the nerdy shit I am IRL
It's hard to make up for the loss of something like discord, and matrix has come close, but it has essentially zero discoverability so it's been hard to find any spaces that isn't filled with neckbeards and stuck-up elitists.
I have met a few people (hi memo and luna!), but I haven't found any servers bigger than a few people that feel like somewhere I want to spend time chatting**.
Have y'all who don't use big tech socials been able to find any spaces online where they are comfortable frequently chatting? If so, do you have any pointers, or just places where I can hang out?

I have a lot of hours on, and a lot of nostalgia for DS pokemon games (D/P/P, HG/SS, B/W, B2/W2) so I thought I'd create my homepage with aesthetic inspiration from the UI of those games! I've got a bunch of assets from spriters-resource.com (I'll eventually add credits for all the assets I used, don't worry), and have been abusing css's border-image property to create some fancy-looking boxes. I've also been using quiple's DS-inspired galmuri font, which I'll also give credit for, I promise
Some work definitely needs done, and I've only completed the main page right now, but I'm really proud of how it's coming along so far!
I have only ever had bad experiences with JS in my admittedly limited overall time using it, and the ecosystem around it (NPM, frameworks, etc) is honestly headache-inducing in my opinion, so I have opted to essentially never use it as basically the only site I maintain is my own homepage.
I was wondering how much of y'all use JS, specifically for your web revival/personal homepage sites, and what you think of it generally?
(also, side question, is there any way of reusing HTML without JS? I'm planning on doing a homepage redesign soon and something like that would be convenient, but as established, I despise JS, but I've been so far unsuccessful in finding alternatives)
Those types of videos showing ""futuristic alternative modes of transport"" are basically all scams or pipe dreams. If you want to fix transport, all you need to do is make cities less car-centric, and more accommodating of bikes and foot traffic. Trains are also great, especially for bigger/less dense city structures.
Really, we already have the technology needed to fix transport, it's just that the car industry makes a huge amount of money, and is heavily subsidized by governments all over the world, so it's very difficult to change the status quo. It's not a tech problem, it's a capitalism problem.

Right ok, gotcha. So basically my options are twitch or owncast, and I don't currently have a server to host things on so I'll just stick to twitch probably
Does anyone know of an alternative to twitch that isn't twitch? I don't really have any intention of "getting big" with my content, and if I can help it, I'd rather not use a platform with incompetent administration owned by a company famous for worker's rights violations. I'd generally like to avoid big tech companies in general, but I do understand that maintaining infrastructure for that kind of platform is probably pretty expensive.
[1] If you're on a phone/tablet/laptop or have headphones on, people will assume you're busy and wont talk to you at all.
