Not too long ago, I saw someone with a splash page very similar to mine, which got a "Hum, this reminds me of someone...  " kind of reaction from me  :ok:

I found it amusing, maybe because I do not consider myself very good at web design or coding so I don't mind it as much as if it was my own art (my digital art)...?

I'm not here to reinvent the wheel when it comes to website design, and I don't expect others to do so. As long as they aren't straight up lifting off someone else's whole page - I'd appreciate it if they made it theirs in some way. You know, keep the layout, the way things are organized if you like that, and you can even borrow some of my code if you find it hard to make it yourself - but at the very least change the colours, the backgrounds, the typography, the art, things like that.

I don't really majorly mind anything that has been posted so far. I actually enjoy the fact that we have kind of gotten back to the guerilla school of art and asset reusing.

Excuse me, may you elaborate on "guerrilla school of art"? Sounds interesting but I don't quite get it yet

☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Let's talk dream homes
« on: March 04, 2023, 11:28:29 am »
You know, the kind of place you would live in if money, space and time weren't a problem. Where would you live? How would your home look like? Would it have any kind of fun things you couldn't go without given the chance?  :dive: In this topic, the sky is not even the limit, so go bonkers!

Not too long ago I dreamt about a two-story house with a garden and pink walls.. I remember it had a room for each activity its owner was interested in - a reading nook, a toy gallery, a pet zone... I find the idea lovely.
Personally, I'd love to grab the reading nook and toy/trinket mini-museum idea from hers, and add a gamer room with a big screen and a comfy couch (or puffs!) for me and my buddies to play together... my fiancee and I are avid physical retro game collectors and it would be nice to have everything in one place, displayed in shelves along with "gamer merch"  :ozwomp:

I'd also personally love an artist studio, a personal space to create and make art. Not just digital art like I do nowadays, but also have all sorts of painty things, and clay, and maybe even an area dedicated to art pieces, both mine and from other artists... or maybv that could be a room of its own - a museum of art! And a toy museum, of course, some toys ARE art too :ozwomp:

Also, as a person who lives in a small apartment, my family and I always been fascinated by those huuuuge kitchens you see on USA sitcoms, the ones that have a huge table in case the whole family comes to have dinner and still enough space to walk around. I'd love to have that...

And, while I don't really have a green thumb, I'd love to have a garden where I could grow plants. Herbs for the kitchen, veggies, maybe a few fruit trees, and hanging plants, succulents, maybe even a few palmtrees or *gasp!* carnivorous plants!  :omg: I'd also love to have a few animals, like maybe a chicken or pigeon coop and a little cat corral because I know my fiance loves cats and he believes they could use some outside enrichment, but outdoor cats are a big problem for both the environment and cats themselves - I think a little fenced space, or a "catio" as they call them nowadays, with toys and places to climb and scratch would be both fun and safe for possible future pet cats

So yeah, if you could have the living space of your dreams, what would it be like? What places would it have and for what purpose? How would you decorate it? I'd love to hear from you! Also do not mind if you see this post edited from time to time - I'll be adding more ideas as I come up with them!

Thank you for your input, Gans!

Square or circle? Both at the same time will be difficult...

Is this a hypothetical question or an actual one? I... don't know what you're talking about  :drat:

Depends on the kind of games and processing demands of course. I'd say, get a used Windows 7 machine and see, if it's capable of all the things you'd like to try. At least you shouldn't lose too much money on it, if it's not good enough. Disk space can be upgraded easily. An SSD would surely be a big boost and is 100% worth upgrading.

Hey, I think I could try this one! I don't play very graphic-demanding hyperrealistic games (things like Binding of Isaac, Starbound, Cult of the Lamb, Toontown Rewritten, Hylics 2 just so you get an idea), and sometimes I stream those games for my bf or play online with him. An older computer can't handle as much... but still, I think it could be worth a shot to see if Windows 7 can handle what I expect it to do.

Eventually, you'd get into problems with the newer programs, that have higher demands every year. That's how the computer industry goes. You can do a nearly unlimited amount of stuff with the old machines. But it will get difficult when you need the newer stuff, streaming for example. That will require a lot of power.

If I'm lucky, I could afford having a less up-to-date/powerful machine at home. I'm currently an intern for a graphics-making company, and it provides me with the technology and programs needed. In other words, I have a computer at work with everything it needs for me to work on work-related things. So I don't need that much for home. As long as it runs smoothly  :cheerR:

Maybe your laptop just needs some cleaning. Can you open it up? Maybe you can find a tutorial online, as some laptops are trickier than others to open. Also, this experience will make your brain grow in size, then you're almost ready for Linux, if you're looking for an alternative to get away from Windows. Have you tried Linux before?

Actually, I discussed this because it's missing a key and I got told that:
  • I need to replace my entire keyboard just to get my key back  :drat:
  • That, due to the way my computer is built, they would need to disassemble my entire laptop just to get that key back  :drat:  :drat:
  • That it's a delicate machine and I might get everything I got on it lost due to this process. It's not a guarantee, but the risk exists  :drat:  :drat:  :drat:

I have tried Linux, but as a kid, and wasn't very happy with it. So while I'm willing to give it another chance, I still don't know that OS well enough.

Thank you once again for your advice!  :unite:

I think this is a genre of book that has been forgotten by time and I'd love to dig into these if I ever came across any  :ozwomp:

Reminds me of this huge book (phone book thickness!) I found in a thrift store a while ago, that was pretty much a catalogue of stock art!  :dive:

Hello! I'm writing to you from a computer that its starting to enter its sunset years - an ASUS ROG Strix (my first fancy rainbow keyboard laptop!) that has seen many art & game related projects and screamed at me with its fans everytime I use Unity or a game for too long. Lately, it has been doing that more and more often if it's on while on its charger, and can't stand too much on its own (with no charger on).

I bought it as a recommendation by my school, and we've worked on many things together. I learnt digital art and animation and 3D modelling and game making with it. It's been the birthplace for many of my most beautiful and beloved digital pieces. When the time comes to say her goodbye, I'll miss her.  :pc:

I estimate she will last me until the end of my degree, maybe a little more - but not enough to keep working with her the same way I did all these years. I've decided that my next computer should be a desktop one - you can make games and big projects with a laptop, but... it suffers. It's like sending a pug to a greyhound race. I have a few friends and family members who are into building computers, so maybe I could get a computer custom tailored for me in exchange of some money (it's a skill that should be rewarded!  :ozwomp: )

Thing is, my brain is very small and I have no idea what kind of desktop computer would be ideal for me.  :drat:  I know there are people in this forum who love and understand technology better than me and that you're all a bit off the beaten path (in a good way!), so I thought this would be the right place to ask.  :unite:

If you want to lend me a hand, I'm going to go through a list of Important Requirements I'd love my future computer to have, also feel free to ask questions if you need them  :cheerR:

  • It needs to be able to handle programs like Blender, Unity, ZBrush, Adobe Photoshop/Animate/Illustrator/After Effects (obtained with dark magic of course  )
  • Please please please. It needs to be QUIET. I understand computers need fans and that mine is working very hard to help me do projects and homework but its fans are very loud and I take issue with constant loud noises, it messes with my head. I compared it to "screaming" before, in this post. So yeah, it would be nice for my future computer to have less noisier fans or to tweak things in a way it isn't so noisy.
  • I would love it to have an older OS, something that isn't as annoying and intrusive as Windows 10. For now, this computer would be for personal art/projects and nothing work related, so I think I could afford to have this?. I don't know if an older OS would get along with the kind of programs described before, but I'm not big on having those up to date, if that helps. I could also consider giving Linux another try, but I don't know anything about it yet.
  • This is more of a second priority, but I'd love to be able to play games with this future computer too! It'll be mostly a "work" computer for personal art projects, but I'd love to keep the social aspect of playing games, chatting and streaming.
  • And finally, it's gotta have a lot of disk space! I use external drives to archive my stuff, but it'll still need the space to handle all these programs (plus RAM) aaaand I might be a little bit of a digital hoarder  :innocent:

I hope it's okay for me to ask about a thing like this here, and thank you in advance!  :unite:

☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Re: Pet Names
« on: March 01, 2023, 06:24:23 pm »
You know when you are a kid and you don't quite know how to take care of pets because of poor information by your parents/pet stores?  Yeah... I've been there, too. I regret it immensely, and now I want to make sure I have all the resources and time to make sure an animal can thrive under my wing, so I'm not currently owning any pets. Still, here are their names in memoriam:

- Pixit: Yellow parakeet, female. Named after Heidi's pet bird (or at least, how I heard it was pronounced)
- Dee-Dee: Goldfish. Named after Dexter's sister
- Tuptush: White bunny. Named after my aunt's bunny, which in turn might be a name for Thumper in another language?
- Sparky: Miniature Schnauzer dog. Named after the electric Stitch cousin.

Honorable mentions:
- "Absol" and "Houndour": Stray dogs we found roaming near our house one day. Named after dog and dog-like Pokemon. Abandoned by their previous owners at the mountains, now happily adopted by other people (we couldn't take care of them). "Houndour" is now Teddy, and he's been adopted by our next-door neighbour, so I can still visit him!

« on: February 17, 2023, 09:00:28 pm »
Not gonna lie, I love Comic Sans. It's informal and casual in a world that demands professionalism all the time (being professional is good, but there's a time and place for everything!  :dive: ). It's also a great shorthand to show that you're being silly or tacky on purpose.

My earliest memory of it was being the default font of a series of eduntainment games I played a lot as a kid and that I'm preserving nowadays, so it brings warm memories  :transport:

I think you should check out Boppin'. It's a bizarre puzzle game with lots of varied assets and levels and probably the deepest metaphysical storyline than you'd expect from a puzzle game. It's also got its fair share of edgy humor. There's a video on the game (hah) if you want to check it out.

♖ ∙ Games Cafe / Virtual Pet Games
« on: February 17, 2023, 08:47:15 pm »
Hello, hello all, this is the topic where we discuss one of my favourite things that ever game from the digital world: virtual pets! Some of the engagement, none of the mess, very affordable for people who don't want or can't have actual pets. Of course, they can't replace what a real animal can bring, but they do have charm of their own  :4u:

I'm currently focused on browser-based virtual pet websites. I encourage you to talk about your own favourites and bring points about what makes them special.  :cheerR: Of course, if portable virtual pets (like Tamagotchi!), or particular games (Petz anyone?) or even robot buddies (Aibo fans, we hear you!) are more your thing, you're free to discuss them as well! All virtual pets are welcome here  :transport:

Here's my choice picks for browser pets.

- Moderneopets: Or Mneo, as I like to call it  :ok: Bringing back the classic Neopets feel bit by bit, rebalancing games/economics, coming up with new colours and species for your pets and overall bringing a fairer experience. It's still kind of small, but the community is very nice and welcoming.

- Dragon Cave: A classic in the world of pets that grow through viewing/clicking. I love the classic dragon designs!

- GPX+: Bringing Pokemon to view/clicking-based mechanics! Slowly updating with the newest Pokemon from gens 8 onward. I also gotta say this game has the best clicking-based gameplay I've seen. They put in a lot of effort in making clicking hundreds of other users' eggs/Pokemon not feel like a huge effort to you.

- Flowergame: An obscure favourite! Grow yourself a little virtual garden with these endearing pet plants. Comes with simple minigames so you can grow the plants yourself without relying on other people's views. I especially love the Halloween-exclusive carnivorous plants, they're funny.

- Marapets: Kind of an acquired taste and I don't play it anymore nowadays, but this was the game of my teenhood and I remember it fondly. An edgier take on Neopets with a more balanced economy. Home of the best virtual pet ever, the Yuni.

Honorable mentions that sadly aren't with us nowadays: Boopets, Nebulapets, VDex Project, DragonAdopters, Squiby...

My pick on Smash Bros is Ness, mostly because when I started playing, that was the only character I had no idea about!  :omg: I knew of the others by my friends' games or by reading Nintendo magazines, but I never saw that boy before. Earthbound had NEVER been released in Europe (until fairly recently, and only for the Virtual Console!) and of course, I never heard of it. So I became fascinated with him, and then Earthbound, and then I "researched" it (aka read the Wikipedia page for it) and eventually learned I could play it via... ahem, dark magic...  :ziped:  But yeah. Earthbound, and by association Ness, became less of a game and more of an experience, the one of discovering the mysterious game the mysterious boy with psychic powers came from, and that's why it means a lot to me.  :4u:

My pick on any multiplayer Mario game (the holy trio, Party, Kart and Sports) is Birdo. Once again, it was a character unknown to me when I started playing (Mario Kart Double Dash), and I liked Yoshi from before (I think everybody loves Yoshi), so the idea to play as a "girl Yoshi" was very appealing to me  :loved: . I also loved her weirdest traits (her trumpet snout, her voice...). Nowadays, I love Birdo for being such an interesting design with quite the story attached to her (not just transgender, but also started out as a villain!), which I think allowed her to stray away from just being a plain femenine design, resulting in something quite unique.  :transport:  :ozwomp:

☕︎ ∙ Fun & Forum Games / Re: What did you accomplish today?
« on: February 17, 2023, 07:33:03 pm »
I somehow managed to haul a discarded cardboard expository shelf (you know, the kind they make to promote and put products there to sell) in the shape of a giant pink soap dispenser AND taller than myself (and heavier than you'd expect from something made of cardboard) from the other side of town to my home, by myself, and carry it through a subway and a train.  :ozwomp:  (I'm EXHAUSTED tho  :drat: )

It was recently discarded and awaiting recycling / the garbage truck and brand new, no pet pee on it or anything. I found it too pretty and functional to deserve such a sad end. On my way, I got several bamboozled looks by the authorities (subway driver, receptionist, the fuzz) and amused ones by bystanders.  :ok:

Right now it sits near the entrance to my room. I'll rethink its position and then I'll put some of my favourite trinkets (including some gifts from my boyfriend  :transport: ) on it and wait for my mom's reaction when she sees it!

14
After donating to all the good charities, end world hunger, and make sure biology is preserved, everybody has a house to live and that all my loved ones can live happy fulfilling lives with no money worries?

I'd want to invest the rest of my infinite money on managing to live together with my boyfriend, and a house I actually want to live in, with a garden, two floors and the walls painted in pink, and enough space for us, our interests and our pets. I'd love to start a studio that would be kinda messy like a garage band and we could make animations, music, videogames, and also be able to buy all the popular songs' licenses so I can make music videos for them  :ozwomp:

15
I want to be an expert at animation! I want to know all about drawing things and making them move, and to get as good at it as the legends!!  :ozwomp:
