Granted, but their new found breeding instincts kick in and the world becomes so overwhelmed that it's no longer stable for life.
I wish I was able to freeze time and unfeeze it whenever I want

⛺︎ ∙ Cinema / Re: Why do you watch YouTube?« on: September 06, 2022, 04:17:33 pm »I've actually been trying to ease myself off Youtube. In the absence of social media, my subconscious seems to have latched onto Youtube to get my fix. I see myself just scrolling on the homepage on my iPad constantly to try and find something new to watch, and get them dopamines. I tried logging out to just get clickbaits at the home screen, but it didn't take long for the algorithm to get an idea of what videos I enjoy. Nowadays, I only use it to watch videos from channels I subscribe to on Fraidycat, that I have no alternatives to, and use it to record songs onto cassette. :omg:k: 217
☕︎ ∙ Fun & Forum Games / Re: What decade were you born in?« on: September 06, 2022, 02:03:00 am »I was born in the 1994. We got our first computer in 2001, with Windows ME. I experience Web 1.0 in most of it's glory. Chatting online on AOL, sending emails. Making websites with GIFs and images everywhere. I loved it! I'm very happy to see the website aesthetics make a comeback, and the younger generation is carrying the torch! 218
⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: WAP/WML« on: September 06, 2022, 01:51:51 am »Unfortunately, but somewhat ironically, none of the sites we build here are accessible by actual mobile WML browsers since they only support HTTP, not HTTPS. Just tried opening Cobra's website with my Nokia 6500 slide, and it doesn't know the SSL standard yet. Ah... I think I might be a member of a tilde server that can do regular HTTP, so I might try that. I have been in correspondence with the developer of wApua and reported a general bug (the one with valid DTDs not being accepted correctly). A new version is hence inbound! Also made him aware of our little hobby community here so perhaps there will be more features in the future? Who knows!Sweet! The project is alive! ![]() 220

It would be amazing if you made a mobile browser. Neither Android nor iOS has a browser for it, and it’s an injustice imo! 221
⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / WAP/WML« on: September 02, 2022, 07:19:27 pm »I've been getting into WAP, recently. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, mobile phones were becoming advanced enough to have screens, and be able to send data other than voice, but weren't advanced enough to properly render HTML pages. So they invented a protocol for these new internet-connected devices, using a simplified HTML-like language called WML (Wireless Markup Language). Basically, everything was condensed into one page, which was divided into "notes", and you click on links to access those different notes. There was no styling, and for version 1, you can only upload monocrome images. In a way, it was like a mobile Gopher. There was a version 2 which was a little closer to HTML, but still had limitations. I don't know too much about that. Nowadays, though, phones are more than capable of rendering websites properly. In fact the tables are almost turned, with websites being made for mobile first, and desktop being afterthoughts. I'd love to see WML make some sort of comeback, though. Gopher and Finger have done it, why not this? I can't find any WML browsers for Android or iOS. There is a working desktop browser for WML pages, though, but is only for Linux. It's called wApua. Based on videos I’ve seen, it looks dumb phones released today still use WAP, or at least WML, so I guess thats an option. Can anyone here confirm? Personally, I've only experienced it for like half an hour back in the day, as my then new phone gave me a free hour. Never bothered with it since, though, and lowkey wish I did. I do have my own WML site (in Scots), however, which I host on Neocites, if you want to (or rather can) check that out. So anyone here remember WAP/WML? What were your experiences? 222
☺︎ ∙ Chat & General Interests / Re: Languages« on: September 02, 2022, 07:05:17 pm »The best method I found for studying is a mix of learning to sentence build and a ton of immersion. I was fortunate enough to spend a year abroad in Japan with a host family and attended school, the whole nine yards. Most everyday I spent studying and being immersed helped me retain what I was learning so much more than when I was just studying by myself in the States.I really want to do this with Scottish Gaelic and Italian, I've found colleges for both in their respective countries, and hope to go to them at some point of my life. I would love to move to Italy one day, too, because as someone who is really into retro tech, Italy is like a gold-mine! Their second hand shops are absolutely amazing! Currently watching telenovelas and trying to speak some Spanish with my family and friends when possible. I've been trying to do the same with Italian. My grandmother was Italian, and was always happy to speak her native tongue with family members. Unfortunately, she passed away during the pandemic, and it seems I'm by far the most fluent in Italian in my family, so I'm stuck with chatrooms and watching videos online. Though I've begun to notice that I'm now having a much easier time understanding them. I don't rely on subtitles or rewinding nearly as much as I used to! Do you have Spanish family, then? Or somewhere in Latin America? 223

⛽︎ ∙ Technology & Archiving / Re: What kind of phone do you have?« on: August 31, 2022, 02:50:15 am »I have a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. I've been using Blackberry phones for years because of the physical keyboard, but when they stopped making them, and couldn't get any other brand on contract, I had to use something else. I settled with the Z Flip because it's a phone that reminds me of the weird and wonderful phones from the 90s and 2000s. Seems to have that same gimmicky energy! It's uncomfortable to use in long periods of time, but I rarely use my phone anyway, so that's not a big issue. It's generally not practical in the slightest, but that doesn't matter to me. It's just so cool! ![]()
Wow, that is so neat! I've always wanted to use a classic rotary phone, but connect it to my smartphone via bluetooth or something. Surely there's a market for such a thing? Since it doesn't (yet) exist, is there a way to connect a real rotary phone to my mobile? |
