My favourite is the original Half-Life. I always enjoy playing SVEN Co-Op with friends!

Team Fortress 2 has great characters and lore, but the game itself leaves a lot to be desired, imo. Guess I’m just not a fan of multiplayer shooters.

I'd love to say, just replace it with one from the scrap, which would probably still be functional. But the fortuneate days of abandoned VCRs standing by the street will have gone in a couple of years.

Yeah, it kind of sucks VCRs aren’t even being made any more. Hopefully people will start making aftermarket parts for them. Somehow.

I'd also just go with new, though I guess it's good to know in case they ever stop being available?

I can’t imagine they will in a very long time, with cassettes rising in popularity again and such.

Honestly, one thing that helps these devices continue to function is to keep using them.

My VCR had problems rewinding longer (and by extension heavier) tapes, it always gave an error code when it tried, so it was a pain to make mixtapes. It still played videos just fine, so decided to watch some pre-recorded tapes I have of my favourite films, and a week later after watching a film every night, it started rewinding longer tapes again. The problem fixed itself!

A piece of advice I can give for audio tapes is if you find they're being played slower than they should be, stop the player and take the tape out, and try winding it by hand. If you feel it's stuck or otherwise difficult to do so, put the tape back in the deck, fast forward the tape all the way to the end, and rewinds back again (my deck keeps track of where the tape started, so I make it wind back to there), and then try winding by hand again, if there's still some resistance, flip the tape over, and repeat the process. That should loosen it up enough.

Plus, no buffering or ads! (Save for a couple at the beginning of a DVD or VHS, but they're so novel that I let it slide.)

I also think the difference is because of the nature of physical media, the ads and trailers you get on tape and DVD are time capsules. If you get a VHS tape from 1999, that’s when all of the ads were made.

Whereas streaming is probably more dynamic, and just show the latest ads they’ve been paid to shove at your face. (I say probably, because I never use them)

So long as you realize that anything on self-made optical media might not last forever. I've got 20 year old CDs that are barely readable and some can no longer be read at all.

I think it depends on how you store them. I have CDs from 30-40 years ago that still work perfectly fine today, and that includes CD-Rs with pirated games I got with some older consoles!

I love using VRChat, even as someone who doesn't have a VR headset. I ironically enough use a CRT monitor for it.

It's just so cool to talk to people using personas and avatars instead of having to look at human faces, and hanging out in fantasy and abstract locations. I end up enjoying VRChat meetups more than in-person ones!

Would love to do them again. Seems like the ones that were done through the Yesterweb Discord server are up in the air now.

Physical mail. As a game developer, I get too many emails, even human ones! Would be nice to get a written letter!
