I think this is cool, I'd like to do my own -- do you experience any annoyances with maintenance or is it easy to maintain and filter

it's pretty simple to get it set up, but here's where i've run into small problems (note: i am not well versed in php, juuuuust enough to tweak a thing here or there):

- by default anyone can post and upload images. to mitigate spam a little bit, i included a simple login system. there are no actual *accounts* or profiles, but it prevents anyone from making a post unless theyre logged in - otherwise it redirects to the register page. i've also disabled image uploads :-p i would also use a honeypot for the login, because one time i found a bot trying to register like 16,000 accounts... (ow my database)

- because i spent hours customizing and tweaking the code to implement these changes, i actually don't know the best way to upgrade the software without losing all the data intact @_@'''' this is a problem of my own making tho haha

- because the original software is in japanese and it's a bit obscure, it's a little hard to find english support for it... i actually spent a day translating all the japanese comments in the files T_T

- i've been lucky enough where i don't really need to keep my eye on the site to look out for spam, etc because it's not super active :p (*fingers crossed*)

let me know if you have any further questions!!

I wanted to share the article here but you beat me to it! I'm always excited to see neocities in the news but this was even better - i recognized so many of the sites! :O i bet you could start a CV of articles citing melonking.net :melon: that aside, i thought this was a good brief intro to neocities for the uninitiated!

wooo! let me know how it goes. im still new to making tutorials so anything specific i should explain LMK!

I think the biggest feedback I could give is these would really be improved with some narration. Things like "Now I'm working on the arms; I will do this using the extrude tool; when I started this I had a really hard time with X so now I find doing Y really helpful". I guess a little like the narration you get in these videos!

oh yes for sure!! i plan on making a better video to explain my process haha. i guess time lapses were just pretty easy to throw together while i film/record everything..:ziped: my first attempt i tried to talk while i work and i fumbled over my words too much haha (like "alright now we scale along the z-axis.." *is clearly scaling along the y-axis*). also, that video is too good! i will try to hone that energy when i record my narration >:-)

(i always thought art restoration was so cool, would love to do that for a living! i used to stretch my own canvases but now i learned a new technique :^) )

☔︎ ∙ Help & Tutorials / Re: Gemini, an internet protocol
« on: April 09, 2022, 05:18:52 am »
Nice. I like going on Gemini sites on my spare time.

I'd actually recommend the Amfora (https://github.com/makeworld-the-better-one/amfora) command-line browser as that's the one that I use, supports a ton of OSes, and has a lot of neat keybinds and tricks some of the more barebones browsers (of which there are like 10?) don't feature.

Some of it is a bit tricky, and if you're using Windows you might have to fiddle around with codepage nonsense if you find sites with emojis in them (like mozz.us)

ive been curious about trying a terminal browser for gemini! ive tried lagrange, geminaut, and twin peaks, and tend to gravitate towards lagrange the most lol :-/ i wish i could choose my own palette colors in lagrange like in twin peaks, but i like the other features enough to stay =X

i can't believe i haven't commented on this topic until now! i joined yestercities, a gemini capsule host, back in january. this is my capsule! (and html proxy link, best viewed with dark text on light background).

i really like gemini so far and even though it takes a bit of digging to find cool stuff, it's nice and cozy and cool new things are being developed for it that keep me interested. im not gonna lie, im very visual based and struggle with walls of text lmao, so gemini has been challenging for me in that aspect. i also wonder if it's because i don't have an compsci background like most of the demographic? u_u.

however i found gemini's text-only restriction to be a fun challenge to create some text-based art!! i felt inspired to create an ascii webcomic! (or *Cough* gemcomic) :-3 i like the idea of a piece of art that's super low tech and portable. my comic is just a retelling of an existing story, but it's been fun to experiment with different formats!

what are some of people's favorite capsules? for me, i looove astrobotany and am excited to see more capsules like this, (shout out to honeybees in space! i patiently await an update..:3). i also really like this archive of ansi art, which just makes me want to try a browser like amfora to see it the way it was intended, ha.

hey yall, i thought i would share my latest project idea bwahaha. i was thinking of making a tutorial on a simple virtual world in unity for beginners, but i asked around and seemed like people wanted to see how i made a character from scratch, too. SO while *that* video won't be out for a bit while i film everything n record the voice over, here's a time lapse ★彡 i sometimes find it helpful to see other artist's workflow so hopefully enjoy~ :chill:'' when i finish texturing and rigging that video will be up next! :ha:

I see these are good suggestions! I think the idea with off topic is that its for things that don't relate to the forums overall theme, but I do agree its a bit confusing here.

Also your always welcome to suggest categories! Also also thanks for spotting that regular members cant move topics, I have added that permission so you should now be able to move your own topics freely. :ozwomp:

A revised plan based on your feedback! - Let me know how this feels for you all.

i am in favor of this change! i agree off-topic / general is kind of the same.
