I've never thought of it as strange, but I can see why other people might.
Where I'm from, we have Queso con Guayaba! Or, Cheese and Guava. The type of cheese used is
extremely important, It can't be too salty, too dry, or anything like that. That's why the one that's most used is White cheese, though Mozzarella is another good choice, given the fact that it's not very flavorful and lets the Guava really shine!

This is an example of how it can be served, but I personally prefer frying the cheese and using liquid guava paste as a dipping sauce instead of... a solid chunk. Gives a good customizable experience lol!!!
It's probably not as strange as.
Root beer milk. I also think it's super picky eater friendly, but it certainly isn't a combination you'd come up with easily!
