Hello :D

I stumbled abt a video on YouTube. It was abt loobsters and that they never age. Thats bcs of an enzyme with the name: telomerase.

What is telomerase?
When a cell splits does the telomerase extend the chromosome endings and this slows down the aging of the cells. :omg:

But than i ask myself the question: If they cant age, then why do they die?
Apart from the obvious causes such as disease and parasites, lobsters die bcs they have to molt. At some some point in the live of a loobster molting is too exhausting. The shell gets thicker every time they get it off. That can cause infections or they can even suffocate in there own shell bcs they cant get it off. :drat:

But what if we would get us a loobster as a pet and every time its getting sick or sth like that we help it? would it be possible that the loobster will live forever? I mean if we would take care of the loobster over multiply genarations it could be possible, right? :eyes:
If this would be possible than we could have a loobster that is like 300 years old! :ozwomp: This would be crazy!

Bye :D

okay first of all, really obsessed with the spelling of lobster as loobster.
second of all, it looks like the oldest lobster on-record actually was solidly into the triple digits, being about 140 years old. he was released back into the sea though, so we don't know what happened to him. oh, also, he was named george. awesome.
third of all, and i think the most interesting thing i have to provide here, is that i follow a woman on social media who had a pet crab named howie. receiving the attentive care that she did, howie greatly exceeeded her average lifespan, but at a point, it seems molting just takes too much energy/deals out too much metabolic stress, and i don't know if there's really a way to interfere that wouldn't further stress out the animal...
in the meantime, hey, there're other pets that make great, long-living family heirlooms, like turtles and parrots, which can each get decades under their belts.

This would be like a lobster bonsai! A umm lobsai?? Would the lobster become like a deity as it aged? It could become thousands of years old and all of civilization could becomes centered around keeping the lobster alive. Nation states would dissolve into the great lobster collective, but a band of lobster guardians would have to be formed to fight off the free-lobster underground trying to bring chaos and disorder by releasing the lobster into the wild. They would have vast and epic battles with their carbide hydrophilic power pinchers! But who would be in the right?? The eternal lobster civilization, or those seeking freedom for the lobster?? Is the lobster real?? Has he become sentient and learned to speak over the eons? What wisdom will the lobster share as he plots his own future beyond humanities machinations??  :dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno:
