Formed in September 1997 and taken down in 2017, The Microsoft Agent Ring was a large collection of websites featuring Microsoft Agent technologies.
What is Microsoft Agent?
Microsoft Agent was a technology developed by
Microsoft that allows for users to interact with animated characters inside applications and web pages. It used text to speech engines to allow the animated characters to speak to the end user. These animated characters were called "Microsoft Agents". It came preinstalled with Windows beginning with Windows 98. Microsoft Agent continued to release alongside all Windows versions until Windows 7 in 2009, following Microsoft's discontinuation of Microsoft Agent. The latest release of Microsoft Agent was version 2.0 on October 12th, 1998.

Microsoft Agent allowed for users of the software to make characters through the Microsoft Agent Character Editor. Four default characters were made by Microsoft on the original page, including Genie, Merlin, Peedy, and Robby. Some other notable characters are those featured in the Microsoft Office suite throughout 1997 to 2003, including Clippy, Dot, or Office Logo. The Windows XP search assistants are also Microsoft Agents, including Rover. Another mentionable Microsoft Agent is Bonzi, a purple gorilla that came bundled BonziBUDDY until its discontinuation. The Bonzi character later received a lot of attention after being a meme following multiple meme videos on it before a streamer eventually streamed an XP destruction causing the popularity of the Bonzi character to rise.

How do I join the MSAgent Frontier Ring?

The original webring uses RingSurf for its functionality. The revival used Webringu. Which means in order to join the webring, you must sign this form and wait for Fuego or Laser Boy to add you. But first, please read the following Requirements before submitting your site:
- Web Sites must utilize or feature products and videos that utilize Microsoft Agent 2.0 technologies.
- Web Sites must be creative and interesting. Not just anyone who throws a site together with a few lines of Agent scripting or a single Agent video will be allowed in the ring. And, please no "Under Construction" web sites. Work on it...
- This ring is meant to be world and family friendly, so sites containing racism, NSFW, piracy, or other objectionable materials are not permitted.
- Use of Custom and 3rd-Party Agent characters is encouraged. However, if they are not yours, be sure you have the right to use them and give credit to the creator if required.
- To keep the ring running as smoothly as possible, the HTML ring code should be easy to find on your site for ALL of your site's visitors. You may put it on a second level page as long as you include a link (Microsoft Agent Page, Web Rings Page, Links) somewhere on your main page so ring travelers AND your normal site visitors can find their way along the ring or be introduced to it. Web rings are not one-way systems to bring more visitors to your site. It is not fair to other ring members if you place the ring HTML somewhere where your normal site visitors can never find it.
- You may modify the ring graphic and HTML fragment as long at it is recognizable by ring travelers.
- (Optional) We appreciate it if you provide the link to your 88x31 button.
- Most of all, Share, Learn, and Have Fun...
