Oh HELL'S Yeah!!!   I hope you enjoy yourself with it!! Though, fair warning there is some pretty explicit sexual content in this book, specifically in Johnny's edit sections. Just saying in case that's something you might find uncomfortable! I hate Johnny...

hello again!!!!!!

so i've read thru a bit more of house of leaves!!! and i thought i would give some of my thoughts so far

of course, this will contain spoilers, so i will be putting EVERYTHING in a spoiler block. i definitely recommend picking up a copy, though!

without further ado, lets go !!!!

seriously though buy the book

ok so ALREADY things are very confusing. and we haven't even gotten to the super funky stuff yet.

the plot is a bit hard to explain, but i'll try my best! i'm going to create ANOTHER spoiler block because i'll be explicitly explaining the plot, by the way

OPEN TO REVEAL PLOT

the first protag we're introduced to is a man named johnny truant. he gets evicted, but he's not too sad about it, because, and i quote, "[He] could have put up a fight but the place was a nuthouse anyway and [He] was glad to leave."

(did you see what i did with the fonts?? i feel so cool right now)

also i don't really like johnny cuz of some weird stuff he says later on in the intro btw 

ANYWAYS

so one of his friends named Lude goes like "hey man i know this old guy with an apartment. his name is zampano. you wanna check it out or smth??" and johnny goes like "yeah sure man"

so they do that. but then zampano dies

whoopsie

apart from a few marks on the floor, all signs point to him simply dying of old age.

but johnny and lude still decide to investigate the scene

while there they find a little writing project that zampano was working on called The Navidson Record.

now, The Navidson Record, written by Zampano, is about a film titled The Navidson Record written by this guy named Will Navidson.

...but according to Johnny Truant, there has never been a film called The Navidson Record.

one thing you'll notice as you read through the book is that there are SO many fucking fonts used.

this is because different characters are represented by different fonts!

and finally...there's The Editors.

who are the editors??? i don't know!!! here's what I do know about them, though!

• they're the ones choosing the fonts for the characters (johnny, zampano, etc)
• they're the ones publishing House of Leaves (i think)
• they might be the ones making every instance of house blue but i'm not sure
• they type in bookman, which looks like this:

I love House of Leaves! I've read it twice now, and it's one of the first books I think of, generally, when trying to give book recommendations. It's such a weird time but the themes are so interesting. The actual physical experience of reading it is so unique; it makes you hyper-aware of turning pages and scanning each sentence with your eyes. It's a visual narrative as well as text-based.

It always surprises me how much people hate Johnny, to be honest. Some people even skip his footnotes all together, which in my opinion misses the point; if you do that, you're only reading half the book. Maybe less. When I first read it, I'll admit I wasn't nearly as invested in his story as I was the Navidsons', but over time Johnny has very much endeared himself to me. His flaws are very much the point, and he's also one of the most unreliable narrators I've ever seen, and the parallels between Johnny's story and the house itself are where a lot of the more interesting analysis of the book comes from. Over time I got really attached to him. I don't know that I would say I like him, but I can't hate him.

It's such a weird book, and it's one that's very special to me. I've thought about getting a quote from it as a tattoo, maybe, but a lot of the ones that would make good tattoos are also the basic answers, and I would want something more meaningful than that.

I also highly recommend the album Haunted by Poe. She's Danielewski's sister and wrote and recorded the album while he was in the process of writing House of Leaves. Some people act like Haunted was specifically written to accompany House of Leaves, which is incorrect and doesn't emphasize the merits of the album as its own piece of art. It's like a feedback loop: she influenced his work and he influenced hers. To call Haunted a companion piece to House of Leaves sort of misses that; it wasn't written to accompany the book, they're thematically linked due to being written at the same time by a close pair of siblings who shared their work with each other. The album is Poe's response and processing of her father's death, and she uses a lot of the same imagery as her brother does in the novel. The fun part to me, though, is trying to decide if it's more accurate to say Poe is quoting House of Leaves or to say Danielewski is quoting Haunted; after all, both were written at the same time.

in the book, House is always colored as blue. There’s also other words like Minotaur that gets formatted
