About Me

i have written about myself a lot on my website (and more), so instead here i'll just put a fake little webdesign faq so i have something to talk about. (feel free to steal the questions if you want!)

what's your favorite kind of website?

a personal website! i love a site that feels like a little shrine built to the self, to the authentic creator... something that feels unique and interesting and shameless and creative. something indulgent. (i have a lot of feelings about websites.)

what would you say is your biggest strength in webdesign?

i think i'm good at spacing and determining the actual layout. that was one of the most fun things about making websites in the first place for me. i'd sketch the literal layout of the website so i had a visual to use, and the more techniques i knew there were possible, the more different and interesting my layouts became. i still stick to a formula for functional reasons, which i favor anyway, but i like finding ways to make them a little bit more interesting by virtue of that.

and your biggest weakness?

haha... practicality and graphics. practicality comes in a lot of forms, but tl;dr i'm lazy and plan ahead vaguely because i also like figuring out stuff along the way. i only recently established an actual workflow so now my organization is MUCH better and more practical, but that took, um, 15 years to establish. and i also fiddle with so many styling things even after i publish a website. like, forever.

and with graphics. well! i don't always trust my own graphic-making skill, to be honest. the simpler and the more editing than creating involved, the better. though i suppose if i try to get into drawing again my eye for this might improve. but we'll see.

what's your favorite page on other people's personal websites?

the about page. every time i see a personal website, it's the first subpage i go to. and if there isn't one, i leave. LMAO.

really, though. i mean, it is a personal website, it ought to have one. i've always found the craft of writing a bio online very interesting. i know some people don't like writing bios, but personally, i find it an introspective exercise, especially when you have a whole webpage to work with. i like seeing what the webmaster knows about themself and is proud to share, because it adds a whole new dimension in engaging with a fundamentally personally-made website.

what's your favorite font style?

of all of them, i definitely gravitate toward cursive handwriting because it's both similar to mine and ultimately i like writing most of all. it's usually the accent font style for my websites, and of the more technical ones, my order of preference on screen would be sans-serif > monospace > serif. (in print the opposite, of course, because that's the whole thing about serifs.)

what's your favorite color combination?

light blue and yellow! then after that black and white. then after that, pink and light blue.

how would you describe your experience/knowledge with coding?

i would say roughly intermediate. i think of my experience with anything related to web development kind of like learning a language after living in a different country for like 10 years without any attempts to academically try (including through reading.) i started to get the hang of it out of sheer doing, but i also know there's plenty i don't know that i don't know.

but! it doesn't matter to me - although i am always willing to learn, it's just not my main intention. my main intention, really, is to make things that are cool and are of use to me, which often does not involve learning everything in the world. just the stuff that i want to learn. i know my skill is roughly intermediate because, well, i've been here long enough and have improved enough to say that at least i'm not a beginner now. i'm certainly not an expert. i mean, i just learned about flex boxes this year.

what's your favorite thing to listen to while coding?

mostly music! i can have podcasts and video essays on in the background, but i'm not always paying attention if i'm deliberating something or writing. (i can't write with other words in my head.) with music though, especially music not in english, it's more enjoyable because then i'm mostly listening to the melody than the words. this only works with coding, though - when i'm actually writing, i write best in absolute silence lol

how many websites have you owned?

if i'm going to nitpick myself, i would say this depends on how you would define a 'website'. i separate projects all under the same domain as their own "website," as that is how i construct my projects - they each have a unique design from each other and don't always appear to be uniform, so on their own they appear to be separate websites even if they all start with the same url. and that would be too many to count at this rate, i think.

but i do know that i mean separate subdomains, domains, and projects, so let's see. i had 5 freewebs/webs sites, 2 subdomains, and 3 domains. i currently have 7 active domains as separate categories so in total that makes... 17? one of my favorite numbers, though that might turn into 18 soon. we'll see.

anyway, it might seem like a lot but sometimes i think about how if younger me knew that i would grow up to have 7 different domains as separate website projects, younger me would be absolutely thrilled. and that's what it's all about, really.

My Interests
