I'm looking for a not too expensive E-Reader to look at my digital books and magazines away from my computer, preferably with a monochrome display and a good battery. Most of the things I read are in PDF and sometimes in ePub so I don't think I will have any problems or issues with file format compatibility(s).

A while i was looking at getting a Kobo Libra 2 because it seemed alright. I ended up getting a used Sony PRS-505 instead, because it also does everything i need and was slightly cheaper. The battery is fine for how old it is, my only complaint is that some really big books (A Complete Guide to Heraldry, The World's Writing Systems) crash it.

Do you need a built-in bookstore? Compatibility with your local public library? Physical buttons? I think those are the main things to watch out for besides price.

Do consider buying used if that's practical to do.

welcome to the wonderful world of ereaders! i personally have a hand-me-down kobo aura edition 2 from 2016, and i love it to bits: it's small, it's black-and-white e-ink, and it gets the job done. its battery is also very solid :]

i believe that the kobo aura edition 2 is the oldest that still has overdrive compatibility, if you're looking to rent stuff from libraries? but i personally don't do that haha. i borrow audiobooks and shorter texts through my phone, and save longer texts for the kobo, where i use a special site to transfer epubs directly from my laptop.

also, i don't believe this is open to the public yet, but i'm keeping an eye out for when i can try dear reader, which sends rss output to your ereader directly!

so i guess this is more a recommendation of ways to use an ereader, haha... but hopefully it also shows that you can use pretty old ones and still have a good time! really the only model i hear less than great things about is kindle, and i presume that's because it's amazon

this thread opened at the perfect timing for me o.O I'm considering getting an e-reader since I can't keep printing my school handouts.

I searched my local shopping platform and saw that the most common models being sold second-hand are kindle paperwhites... particularly eyeing a kindle K4 though since I thought the little buttons were charming. I wonder if they're good or should I go with a second-hand kobo instead?

The cheapest one I know of if your into small e-readers is the Xteink X3, it's $69, but it also doesn't have a front light like the kindles, and nooks. It's still a very solid e-reader tho. Also, if your only sideloading then I would not bother looking a kindles, as someone who loved their kindle paperwhite it likes to delete sideloaded books if you keep it on airplane mode for too long. I can't speak of other ones.
